I loved the original trilogy and they are on my annual watch list however I thought the Hobbit was mostly excruciating!.The scene with Golum was excellent , the rest of the movie felt like Fraggle Rock 2000

Release date for the DVD is 19th March as stated on the official website:~

Ta Da!

I'm really surprised at how early that seems. Not that I'm complaining at all.

Maybe it's earlier to give more time before the Extended Edition is out (I'm guessing at around the same time as Desolation hits cinemas)?
I think most people will be waiting for that, anyway, though.

I'll be buying both versions. just like last time! March does seem very early, just three months from cinema release. I remember it felt like a lifetime before FOTR reached DVD.

Well it now seems that the US of A will be getting The Hobbit before us (meaning the rest of the world). It will be released in the UK on the 8th April. Why oh why is it not same world-wide release date like most other films?!

It makes no sense that different countries have different release dates. You have to wonder what the reason is. Still, I'm thinking I might just wait for the trilogy next autumn instead of buying them individually. Of course I might change my mind when I actually see it on the shelf...

I adored this film. The visuals were beautiful and I loved the begining that showed the preparations of Bilbo's birthday right before Frodo went to see Gandalf.
The scene between Gollum and Bilbo was excellent.
The whole thing was great. And first time watching it I immediatley heard the Wilhelm scream when they were escaping from the Goblins.

From that trailer, it looks like Lee Pace got Thranduil off to a tee. Cannot wait to see the Thorin and Thranduil scenes, and moreso, I'm dying to hear what Smaug sounds like.

I'm surprised how much Smaug they showed. Thought they would try and keep him wrapped up until people see the film.

I was surprised too, Whistler. But thinking about it, the voice of Smaug is more intriguing (I think) and we only saw his head. And they've got 6 months to improve the CGI. I mean look how awesome Gollum was: his facial movements were just astonishing. WETA will sort it out for Smaug to look frigging, wait for it, epic - I have no doubt.

I saw this in 3D at the cinema and although I enjoyed it, I was a little let down by it. Just watched it again on Bluray, and its ace. It's not as good as the original trilogy but it was just awesome being in that world again.

I cannot wait to watch The Hobbit trilogy and LotRs trilogy back-to-back. It's gonna be one, long-ass movie watching day

I wish the Extended Edition was released a week before. I have a rule that I never buy myself anything released in November/December in case I get it for Christmas.

Maybe it's time to rethink that strategy, Axl? Hopefully I'll get this as a b-day prezzie as mine is at the end of October.

Just noticed it's on Netflix. I've decided not to buy them until all three are out, so this should tie me over for a while

Took me way too long to see this. Really enjoyed it, liked the lighter tone it had going on and it looks glorious. Martin Freeman is pretty damn perfect as Bilbo too.

I have to say that I enjoyed THE HOBBIT far more on my second viewing (just watched it on Netflix)... when I first saw it,I was a bit hungover and my Grandad had died the previous night, so I wasn't in the best of moods...

I still think it's stupidly overlong and the ideal point to end it would have been Bilbo's speech about home, but I'm now looking forward to the next installment...

An 18 hour stretch in Middle Earth sounds like Heaven!

I've just realised it's now been three years since I last saw LOTR, five years since I saw them in their extended form. Now I'm not sure whether I should just wait until the Hobbit trilogy has finished before I watch LOTR again.

Oh, a Tolkein marathon... I remember doing that when the box-set of Extended editions came out... about 12 hours, only pausing it to eat pizza and refill the bong...

Happy days.

I'm not sure if I'll manage all six back to back. I can do LOTR, and I love it, but by the end I do feel a bit worn out. Maybe The Hobbit one day and LOTR the next...?

3 hour edition for a film which was ,arguably, too long anyway.

Nice to see they've kept the same look as the extended LOTRs.

I dont know if I should drop hints for Christmas, or try and get it seen before Smaug hits the cinema.

Yeah i'm the same. When the original trilogy came out, I asked for the EE every christmas, but I saw the following film the day beforehand on Christmas Eve. in 2002 I saw Two Towers on xmas eve, got fellowship on xmas day, in 2003 i saw return of the king on xmas eve and got two towers on xmas day etc... Problem was as there was a year between watching the previous film I would forget things. So this year i'm thinking of just buying the EE of an unexpected journey myself before xmas so i can refresh my memory before (hopefully) seeing Desolation of Smaug on Xmas Eve (due to friends working, had to watch unexpected journey on 23rd last year)
