I'm not disagreeing that the man's a fucking child with little awareness of the consequences of his actions and a tendency to play the victim. But to suggest that he shouldn't be allowed to make this music strikes me as wrong.

What's wrong with people not wanting someone to make music? Framing it like they're advocating some kind of statutory bar on Brown to prevent him from coming within 500 feet of a recording studio is, well, stupid. They just don't want him to make music. It's a totally reasonable response to hearing someone glorify their own violent, monstrous personality in their tracks.

quote:

quote:

It doesn't need to be absolute, though. Most people reserve boycotting for the most extreme situations, which arguably Brown is. Open condemnation may be seen to be as effective for lower-level horribleness. Why shouldn't people be able to apply their own ideas of proportionality?

I'm not saying they can't. I'm just saying it's more impressive to me that if someone really wants to make a stand they take that zero tolerance approach.

But applying such an approach isn't inconsistent or hypocritical, as you've argued. Zero tolerance doesn't mean boycotting everything and anything.

The main reason to boycott Chris Brown is the bland, safe, tedious R 'n' B he trotts out, in an era when artists in the same genre are doing fantastic things.

He just got nominated for a Grammy for it.

I hope Frank Ocean and Miguel fuck him up and get all the awards.

So to sum up, you boycott Brown and not others and are pissy because I've called you a hypocrite for it.

I don't boycott him. I just don't listen to his music, in part because he's a monster.

Mostly because it's shit music.

I have no problem with people not listening to him because he's shit.

This all got a little out of hand considering my main reason for choosing Connery was the idea that anyone would have Zardoz as their favourite Connery film...

Just read through the Connery discussion - fascinating stuff and I have to say I'm with you 100% on the wife-beating advocate. It makes me wonder about what Jason Connery thinks of his old man after his (now deceased) mother's allegations came out.

So rawls, what you're saying is that you are boycotting the idea of boycotting people? I think you're contradicting yourself.

Some people still listen to Another Rock N Roll Christmas this time of year.....

Different crime, but still.

I actually have more of a problem with people who try to deny they were ever a Gary Glitter fan. I can understand people saying they don't want to give him any money anymore, but he was extremely popular at one time and all of a sudden nobody ever liked him.

I used to like that song at Christmas, certainly. Not so much these days to be honest.

It's that lyric, "love to hear the children sing"...

Sorry to disappoint, but probably not in my top 40 Connery films!

I like Outland, but I dislike misogyny. Dilemma. (Rock N Roll Christmas was also one of my favourite christmas songs when I was a kid, oh dear.)

I think we all know that dragging Sean Connery into a conversation that also involves Chris Brown and Gary Glitter was just my secret revenge for League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

To be honest, considering he was so embaressed by LXG that he retired, he'd probably understand.

If you are ever going to feel so ashamed of your work that you jack it all in, then LXG is really the film to go with.

Yeah, The Hill and The Offence are excellent.

The post just brought me a copy of The Evil People from a company called Zardoz books. It's like they predicted this entire conversation a day after it happened.

Although to be fair his attitude when the film was being made apparently was part of the reason it ended up so bad.
