That didn't just cover Twin Peaks though.

And the storyline of Lucas and his attempts to gain control of Caleb pretty much dominated the series. Even though there were a couple of evil sidelines going on it wasn't as episodic in the way X Files was (and certainly not CSI) and it would have been pretty difficult for someone to start half way through without knowing what was actually going on. Merlyn would have confused the buggery out of them.

But you can't deny Twin Peaks casting a pretty long shadow though, again this is coming from saying that American Gothic was ahead of its time, it wasn't. Twin Peaks was. American Gothic was like a more adult version of Eerie, Indiana - which basically again was a kids version of Twin Peaks. Small town, supernatural, unexplained oddness. What, if any, series did TP get criticised for ripping off?

From what I remember of American Gothic that bothered me was that characters were introduced in one episode and never referred to again, as if the main storyline of the series was not enough to cover entire episodes. We were sidetracked with unimportant storylines and characters, filler basically which at times took over from what was the more interesting aspects of the main characters of Caleb and Lucas.

Was American Gothic before its time though? I remember being excited about it because I had just watched Twin Peaks for the first time and quickly realised the show was nothing more than a rip-off of that series (even the TP owls were exchanged for AG crows). Plus its biggest mistake was not having a story throughline and instead opted for†individual storylines in hope of picking up more viewers, which works for things like†The X-Files and CSI but doesn't work for a show based on a small town.

American Gothic didn't start airing until four years after Twin Peaks was cancelled. The idea that four years on a network is going to decide to rip off a cancelled show is a bit bizarre, especially when the success of The X-Files is the more obvious reason for the show being commissioned. American Gothic was no doubt a result of the new interest in supernatural themed t.v. shows, but it's not modelling itself on Twin Peaks, it is very clearly subverting The Andy Griffith Show.

Another winner from the Beeb and David Attenborough. When he kicks the bucket I think humankind might as well just give up. As visually astonishing as we've come to expect and with these shows always in awe of just how great the the natural world is when people aren't cocking about with it. Not sure what the best moment of the show was - warring giraffes, amorous rhinos, the world's most isolated fish or a sneaky drongo.

Many shows get cancelled because the people in charge make mistakes, when the show still has a massive fanbase despite of this and has not been forgotten by picking up a cult following through repeats and video/DVD then yes, that fanbase will be a perfect aim to create a new show for.

I think you're overstating the case for Twin Peaks a bit here. The show's ratings plummeted, which is why it was cancelled in the first place. The film was also seen as a failure, and that was a 92 release. So you have three years in which you're saying the show built up that much of a cult audience. When the far more obvious suggestion would be the success of The X-Files led to the commissioning of more supernatural themed show. Nobody is denying Twin Peaks is a great and influential show, it's a landmark in American television, but dismissing American Gothic as a rip-off is unfair.. For a start, the shows have two very different styles, both riffing on early success. There's been no secret made of the fact that Peyton Place was the big influence on Twin Peaks, with that already ludicrous soap-opera style being expanded on even further, and a more supernatural darkness added. American Gothic is a very different kind of small-town affair, where the town's sheriff, the figure of good in Andy Griffith, becomes a malevolent force, using his knowledge of this town and its inhabitants to corrupt them. He even has the bumbling deputy and small boy in his care of The Andy Griffith Show. Gary Cole even whistles the theme from The Andy Griffith Show in the first episode, subverting the link even further.

A few episodes I've just seen for the first time. Subject matter obviously isn't suited to early morning repeats.

Because being subjected to that show first thing in the morning is cruel and unusual punishment?

Week 2

1. Black-Adder II - Head (#1.2) - 9/10
2. Black-Adder II - Bells (#1.1) - 8/10
3. Black-Adder II - Potato (#1.3) - 8/10

Finally got round to watching some shows. I remember only slightly Black-Adder from when I was a kid so I thought I would give the series a go. Series one was pretty good if a little ropey but things have certainly turned in the shows favour with the second series. Changing some of the characters slightly (especially Black-Adder himself) and new additions such as Miranda Richardson and Stephen Fry to the cast are very welcome. The gag rate is also very fast so far. Bells starts things of very well with Black-Adder falling for his servant boy, without realising he's a she. Very funny stuff but Rik Mayall completely steals the show with a cameo late on. Head is extremely funny as Black-Adder becomes in charge of executions without realising he is making mistakes. The whole bag on the head stuff is genius. And Potato is another downright fun episode as Black-Adder heads off to sail the high seas with an insane captain in the shape of Tom Baker's legless sea captain. Three very funny episodes and I look forward to working my way through the rest.

Calling series 1 of Blackadder "a little ropey" is being far too generous

The episodes of Frasier that featured Lilith were some of my favourites from the show. This episode, her second appearance in Cheers, was a treat.

Seasons 3, 4 and 5 of Dexter have all appeared in the top 15 in my lists of Top 100 Tv over the last few years, so I expected that when I saw S6, indivudual eps would feature highly in this list.

I only watched this because I went to high school with Sunny, and none of this really surprises me. I almost feel bad for her, but she stole this imaginary boyfriend from her equally annoying sister. I can't really judge the quality of the show, because the whole thing is just weird.

Best one yet. Rainforest episodes always tend to be my favourite from nature shows.

It was decent if unspectacular, I donít believe it will be able to sustain the central idea for more than a single series though.

Pretty sure I won't be watching anything else before midnight tonight so here's my top 100 of the year so few. Everything I saw in January is in order in the first post and comes to about 230-ish episodes I think. From this point on I'll just update when a new episodes enter the top 100, a total and complete update would be ridiculously long and ordering it would be hazardous to my health.

Dexter does very well, all of S6 appearing in the top 15. Raymond features the most because a) it's ace and b) I've seen more of that than anything else this year. David Attenborough gets two shows in the top 65. Despite my current fascination with Charmed, it can't quite scrape into the top 100 and looking at this list reminds me I need to finish S3 of Community.

1. Community 3.17 - Basic Lupine Urology
2. Community 3.3 - Remedial Chaos Theory

So I am making a run through the Series again. Admittedly I started during December with the superb miniseries and the even better series opener 33 but I hope to get through a few episodes a week now. Itís odd watching again (Iíve not done so since it ended) seeing all those characters I came to love, hate, flip flop emotional about and now knowing their respective fates, thereís been a lot of awww and ooow and poor so and soÖItís a brilliant show and Iím looking forward to it, well except Black Market which is wank.

Mary McDonnell is incredible in every single way and I want to marry her.

The Americans / Pilot series 01 ep01

Soviet spies in eighties, Reagan-era America. So itís a little kitschy and tad ropey in areas but I love shit like this and I did enjoy the Pilot despite the gargantuan coincidence of an FBI Counter Intelligence Agent moving in next door to our twenty year deep undercover couple. I canít see it getting further than a single series or two but I think I will keep an eye on it.

Two typically on the ball episodes of the geek comedy. First up a great Penny-centric episode where she becomes hooked on RPG's thanks to Sheldon's involvement and the other guest starring David Carradine as Penny's father. Although the episode belongs to Raj and Howard as they share their first kiss

Glorious. A brilliant yet affectionate parody of Ken Burns' Civil War complete with narration from Keith David. Easily a match for the paintball episodes.

49. Sons Of Anarchy 5-1 - Sovereign
