Very well then, as it's not allowed in the other TV thread, here's a little spin-off list. This is specifically television episodes that will be listed here, not seasons. It would be pretty difficult to list every TV episode you watch in one year so within this thread it's recommended you have a cut-off point once you have reached the 100. Whether or not you allow reality TV programmes, documentaries and soaps is down to yourself but I think if you can buy a box-set of the series then thats a good rule to stick to for jotting it down here.

Embarassingly this thread will show my inadequacy at watching box sets. Can take me up to 6 months to get through one.

Come grab a spot!

I suppose, in theory, that I should include all the TV episodes I've seen so far this year for my first post but ordering 33 in one go is too much of a chore, especially when a whole lot of them are very similar in quality, so just the top few for now.

SPOILERS!

1. Community 3.3 - Remedial Chaos Theory
2. Community 3.5 - Horror Fiction in Seven Spooky Steps

Two of the best episodes of the show yet. Both feature (almost) just the study group and both play about with the format of the show. Remedial Chaos Theory sees the gang at a house warming party for Troy and Abed, but the delivery of pizza means that one has to go downstairs to collect. A die is thrown to determine who this is, and we see the outcome 7 times, events in the flat differing wildly with each depending on who leaves. The Darkest Timeline is genuinely one of the funniest things I've seen on TV in years.

Horror Fiction has the gang telling spooky stories, After Britta's psych eval of the gang reveals that one could be a potential serial killer. Each story tell us a little about how the characters seem themselves and each other. Annie's absurdly disturbing tale is delight, Shirley's views on Britta and Jeff are hilarious but it's Pierce's tale that takes the cake,

3. Everybody Loves Raymond 5.11 - Christmas Present
I really, really love this show and this is one of the best in the run. Ray, thinking he;s being given a horrible tie for Christmas, deliberately buys Debra a fancy Christmas gift in the hope that she'll let him go on a golfing weekend but his plan is foiled when it turns out she's bought him a DVD player. Cue the usual Barone arguing. I just love it. As is often, Peter Boyle's sarky remarks get some of the biggest laughs.

4. Cheers 4.6 - I Will Gladly Pay You Tuesday
$500 for a book? I can see why Sam was bothered.

5. Community 3.4 - Competitive Ecology
Faced with yet another diorama and the possibility of an 8th group member, loyalty's are divided and a tortoise almost killed. Only half of this episode really works. Chang's film noirish storyline is filler and contains few laughs, but the study group in conflict is always a delight.

Sure why not.

  1. Mad Men, season 3, penultimate episode - what is that, episode 12? 11? I dunno. The penultimate one anyway.

Phenomenal stuff. It's the one where (SPOILERS) JFK gets shot. So well-handled, I was genuinely affected by the death of somebody 40 years ago, and several thousand miles away, as portrayed by actors who weren't even alive when it happened. Astonishing stuff.

  2. Mad Men, season 5, penultimate episode

Can't really say what happens as it's not tied to a major historical event, but it's 46 minutes of great TV.

4. Community 3.7 - Studies In Modern Movement

A gem of an episode. So much to like - The Dean's dinner with Jeff, Pierce's paint angels, Annie questioning loosey-goosey, Jesus who drinks blood, "What's the iron for?" or the gang taking the mickey out of Jeff at the end. The kicker is the credits tag with Horsebot 300. Brilliant.

8. Community 3.8 - Documentary Filmmaking: Redux
It's not often I find Jeff to be the funniest in a Community episode but he was in both of these. His portrayal of Pelton in Redux is superb but it's the announcement that he's the grandson of the inventor of foosball that really tickled me.

9. The Girl

I love Series 3 and reading your comments makes me want to go back and watch it all again despite having seen it several times now. The foosball episode is brilliant and I love how the show can constantly mix up the characters and develop relationships, Shirley and Jeff have had a few moments together (tiny nipples) but this was simply lovely by the end.

Redux is why I adore Community, it still boggles my mind that the episodes are barely 20 minutes apiece when they do stuff like that.

I may be misremebering as I only had a cursory glance for fear of spoilers, but were there not posts on the forum last year suggesting Community lost its way in S3? Because there's no sign at all of that yet.

Some people didn't like the direction (more random weirdness, film/television references, Pierce…) of the series and it was criticised for not appealing to new comers (tough). I got the criticisms but I didn’t agree I thought it was a brilliant series with some truly great (and marginally risky) writing and performances. You can’t please everyone though, same went for Game of Thrones which did dip in quality but was never less (in my view) than entertaining. I think it’s way too easy to complain/bitch about a series than appreciate the fact that some people are trying to do something a little different or at least make something familiar feel fresh.

Glad you are enjoying it at the moment though.

Agreed

5. Community 3.10 - Regional Holiday Music
A better epsiode of Glee than Glee ever managed and the best Christmas episode of the show so far. Great songs, good call backs to previous episodes and a lovely heartwaming final scene. Two moments in particular had me crying with tears - Abed and Mr. Rad forcing their lyrics to rhyme by adding "ing" to unison and Britta's realisation that Jeff's been turned, Bodysnatchers style.

10. Community 3.11 - Urban Matrimony and the Sandwich Arts
The title alone made me chuckle, "a thought with another thought's hat on" made me guffaw and I don't think I've ever agreed with anything more than Jeff's "just nut up and die alone". I liked how the ironic cool of both Britta and Jeff was tested and that Troy and Abed being normal makes them both exceptionally creepy.

4. Everybody Loves Raymond 5.18 - Humm Vac
Awesome.

14. Cheers 4.15 - The Triangle
15. Cheers 4.14 - Suspicion

Two of the best episodes of the show yet. Both feature Frasier and the show seems that bit better when he's around. The Coyote/Roadrunner debate in The Triangle is probably my favourite bit of the show so far

Ok, let's try this

The Ren & Stimpy Show. S2 "Rubber Nipple Salesmen" - Right in the disgusting and ridiculous tone Ren & Stimpy got well known for, they embark in a quest to sale rubber nipples, a highlight is the moment they start claiming and demonstrating all the uses the rubber nipples have.

The Ren & Stimpy Show. S2 "Haunted House" - A ghost tries to scare Ren & Stimpy when they arrive to a haunted house, but fails everytime and gets hurt and humilliated in the precoss. There's the classical Psycho reference and a very weird finale.

I really dislike Everybody Loves Raymond My mother likes it but she doesn't like Raymond...

Sapphire and Steel Assignment 2 ep08 (1979)
Sapphire and Steel Assignment 2 ep07 (1979)
Sapphire and Steel Assignment 2 ep06 (1979)

Poor, poor George Tully. I've watched Assignment 2 twice this week and it's still an absolutely stone cold classic and the ending remains agonising.

Star Trek: The Original Series / Mirror, Mirror series 02 ep04 (1967)
It was on, I watched it and it is still a brilliant slice of science fiction and a genuine Trek classic.

American Gothic / Pilot ep01 (1995)
Joan of Arcadia / Pilot series 01 ep01 (2003)

Two pilots for very different if oddly connected (if you go in for all the religion and such) shows both cancelled according to the majority before their time. I really enjoyed both (pretty sure I‘ve seen Gothic before but not since its original UK showing) and will no doubt be pissed when they finish their respective runs.

You're not watching American Gothic on DVD are you, Imp?

If you are, I think they messed the episode order up on them.

It's confusing enough as it is.

A great show though. Quite enjoyed Joan of Arcadia as well.

Never thought much of that.

I'm shocked they still haven't sorted out the Gothic running order - if I remember that set correctly, it's particularly annoying as you have to move back and forth between discs.

Was American Gothic before its time though? I remember being excited about it because I had just watched Twin Peaks for the first time and quickly realised the show was nothing more than a rip-off of that series (even the TP owls were exchanged for AG crows). Plus its biggest mistake was not having a story throughline and instead opted for individual storylines in hope of picking up more viewers, which works for things like The X-Files and CSI but doesn't work for a show based on a small town.

I've never before considered American Gothic at all similar to Twin Peaks. Still don't. Themes, mood, stories, characters - nada.

Small town Americana, eerie goings on, odd characters?

I haven't actually seen the series since first televised so I can't be more specific but I just remember watching it around same time as Twin Peaks, and finding it very much TP-lite.

That didn't just cover Twin Peaks though.

And the storyline of Lucas and his attempts to gain control of Caleb pretty much dominated the series. Even though there were a couple of evil sidelines going on it wasn't as episodic in the way X Files was (and certainly not CSI) and it would have been pretty difficult for someone to start half way through without knowing what was actually going on. Merlyn would have confused the buggery out of them.
