The Motorcycle Diaries (Walter Salles)

A highly romanticised view of Che? Sure, but its youthful spirit of adventure and idealistic longing to change the world for the better is highly infectious. (4)

The Last Movie (1971, Hopper, 1st viewing)

According to legend, the great Dennis Hopper originally had a more linear and structured edit of The Last Movie. After persuasion from Alejandro Jodorowsky (who made The Holy Mountain, which I was reminded of whilst watching this film), he decided to re-edit and instead created a fractured, bizarre and really really great film. It has gone down as an infamous film, due to the studio's full belief Hopper could have delivered them a really solid follow-up to the inferior Easy Rider, they gave him full creative control and he instead made a film about film-making with a film inside a film, fuelled by drugs with a non-linear narrative and editing tricks. This resulted in Hopper essentially being exiled from Hollywood for a decade. Whether you view his vision as a success or failure is completely arbitrary, but if you need proof that Dennis Hopper was a maverick/loon/genius, track down The Last Movie.

I love that film, great review.

A new number 1:
001) Moonrise Kingdom (Wes Anderson, USA, 2012, BD) - 8.0
Yah, gud. Likey.

Holy shit, coming from you this is a rave to the nth degree.

Good film, though. Glad you liked it.

They're both equally awesome.

Just of interest, have you seen The Thing remake prequel?

Nah, the whole thing just looked pointless. Even the presence of MEW didn't get my interest going.

It's really not as bad as it could have been, but it is pretty redundant.

Winstead is really solid in it.

I'm not a fan of Death Proof, but the fact that it features Mary Elizabeth Winstead's legs in a starring role means I just can't hate it.

I bought it along with The Raven and Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter. It was the best of the three.

It had some hilariously funny moments. I think "In high school I didn't dress like this or wear make-up" was my favourite.

finally got to Blockbuster. Spent a lot of money. Will finally give Sporanos another go since I just bought 3 seasons for 7.50

I've hidden it in the car to sneak into the house when the other half isn't looking. Mainly foreign language - stuff like Undertow (just looked out artificial Eye!). Derek Jarman's The Garden, for no real reason, is possibly the oddest choice. A James Gray to try and work out why a relatively stodgy director of middling melodrama is being talked up as a great thing. Tournament, 'cos it's fun.

Is he being talked up as a big thing now? I thought most of his work got kind of mixed responses. I have to be honest, I remember very little about any of his films. I think I've seen them, and I'm pretty sure I didn't care for Two Lovers, mostly thanks to Paltrow, but I have next to no memory of stuff like We Own the Night.

Exactly. I don't know if it's a group of critics trying to 'own' a director (and, by extension, promote themselves). Or it could be a distortion based on what's retweeted into my feed

You do get these little pushes for directors some consider unappreciated from time to time. Is it something to do with that new Jeremy Renner/Marion Cotillard film he has coming out?

I don't think so - his name has been popping up for a while and the new film hasn't really been referenced.

I went to my BB. Didn't spend anything. They had about 82 copies of The Matrix Reloaded and The Powerpuff Girls movie.

They had stuff like that, and it took ages to go through, but they did have a ton of good animation for 2 or under (I nearly bought a TImmy DVD )

The way my local one seems to be arranged now is that anything newer that's on sale is put out on the shelves, and they seem to be updating that every few days. I noticed they've just added Cabin in the Woods for 2.50, Dark Shadows for 3, Expendables II for around 4 (after the 50% discount) but they have a separate section for t.v. shows, blu-rays and games and then baskets scattered around the shop for all the discs that are down to 2. The 2 section is where I've seen most of the decent older films, foreign titles, etc.

Ditto.

It takes effort to lug piles around a move things tidily so you can see the bottom layer as well

Ha de ha!

There were, literally, about 300 titles in my local. Not the biggest store to begin with, and half was closed to customers. There were 42 new boxsets, a total of 25 Blu Rays, new and pre-owned, and two bins of pre-owned DVDs, and I owned about 100 of those titles.

Are all the stores closing? There are a few further afield that I've gone past that don;t have massive sale signs.

I don't think they're closing all just yet. I do know that my local one told me they're getting new stock from head office all the time, so I think they must be throwing stock at them from other branches.

So watched my new 2.50 copy of Cabin in the Woods. Still a lot of fun, still don't understand why it was hyped as a game-changer.

Is it Blockbuster you're working? Sorry to hear that if so. My local one was the only rental shop in the area and I tried to use them for new titles instead of Lovefilm whenever possible. I think they were fighting a losing battle though, 3.50 for one film for a night compared to unlimited titles a month for about three times that with Lovefilm.
