This is the 4th one of these I've seen and it's made me realise I must be a really hardcore masochist.

Your film collection wasn't enough to make you realise that?

You mean my film collection that contains Taxi Driver, His Girl Friday, Sons Of The Desert and about 50 others from your top 100. If that's the case then you share my masochistic tendencies!

I was thinking more of the one that contains Forrest Gump, Van Helsing, etc.

1. Batman, season 3

Admittredly only the last 4 episodes of the show were seen this year but thyread rules means this is were it goes. It's the weakest of the three and the Batgirl adds nothing to th show but it's still so much fun.

Do you only add seasons once finished? If so, I've been a little previous.

1. Girls Season 1
One of the most impressive debut seasons in a while.

2. Angel Season 3
Two thirds of this season is brilliant, and the other third is good to great.

New Eighth Doctor Adventure (Series 03) (2009) Eighth Doctor / Lucie Miller

3.5 The Scapegoat OR Goat People of Nazi Occupied Paris (5)
3.4 Wirrn Dawn OR Eww and Race Memory (5)
3.6 The Cannibalists OR Cockney Robo-Apocalypse (4)
3.1 Orbis OR Planet of the Zoidbergs (4)
3.3 The Beast of Orlock OR Hans, Greta and the Golem (4)
3.7 / 3.8 The Eight Truths / World Wide Web OR The Cult Spiders of Doomsday (3)
3.2 Hothouse OR Revenge of the Man Eating Plants (that used to be people) (2)

I’m resigned to the fact that Paul McGann’s ever brilliant Doctor will never see the light of television ever again and though this makes me incredibly sad, at least I’ve been lucky enough to have the Big Finish Audios. This third series of New Adventures begins six months after the second series with a despondent Lucie Miller (Sheridan Smith) opening her front door only to come face to face with the barrel of a gun. The incomparable Miss Miller believes the Doctor dead, haven fallen to his death (along with Morbius) into a deep chasm on Karn. Obviously he is alive but for the Doctor it hasn’t been months but years, six hundred in fact and his memory is a bit hazy.

What follows is an extremely entertaining series and though the two-part finale suffers and wanes in the second half (much like the television show) it remains a thoroughly satisfying listen. The opener Orbis is fantastically idiosyncratic and is impressively brought to fleshy, squelchy life. The second episode Hothouse isn’t awful but not a lot really happens, Orlock is a lot of fun with some wickedly macabre moments with a dash of Grimm thrown in. The robot populated The Cannibalists is hugely enjoyable with some great vocal work from guest stars Phil Davis and Phil Jupitus and Wirrn Dawn is gross and gripping. My favourite though is The Scapegoat a funny, disgusting and brilliantly gothic slice of science fiction, plus Goat People.

(3.9 out of 5)

2. Restless
Reasonable espionage thriller based on William Boyd's novel. The WWII sequences work better than the 70s segments.

Sapphire and Steel Assignment 2 (08 Episodes) (ITV) (1979)
Our titular ‘heroes’ team up with ghost hunter George Tully to investigate an abandoned railway station. This remains one of the best, most intelligent and spectacularly atmospheric slices of creepy science fiction produced for television. So good I‘m going to watch it again before the end of the week and Assignment 3. (5)

The Snowman and the Snow Dog (C4) (2012)
A bit late with this but better that than never right? No. Why is he flying a plane and what’s that awful noise playing over the picture? Lame. (1.5)

Fifties British War Films: Days of Glory
(BBC4) (2013)
An entertaining if individualistic take on British war films of the nineteen fifties. It reminded me how much I rather enjoy The Wooden Horse, The Colditz Story and Ice Cold in Alex. (3)

Next Up: White Christmas (Drama Special, 2011)

That whole sequence would have played a lot better without that dreadful fucking song. I liked it in general though.

Did they mention the Peter Butterworth story about The Wooden Horse? I like that more than the film.

They didn’t mention it but then it would have been a little embarrassing, rejecting an actual POW who helped people trying to escape....

That was one of the two favourite discoveries about the great Peter Butterworth. The other was that his son played Angelo in Mike and Angelo.

I loved Mike and Angelo!

NEA 4.1 Death in Blackpool (2009) Eighth Doctor / Lucie Miller
Is this the beginning of the end for one of the greatest partnerships in Doctor Who history? It sadly appears to be so. The Doctor and Lucie head for Blackpool 2009 so that the homesick Lucie can have Christmas with family. However Lucie’s Aunty Pat (actually her Zygon lover in an Aunty Pat suit) and a returning foe are about to make the whole thing a lot more complicated and far more dangerous than a quick pop home. Those who complain about the Christmas Specials should give this depressingly seasonal kick in the face a go. One of the best hours of drama from Doctor Who that you could hope for, it’s gripping, it’s bleak and there’s a drunkard insistent that he’s the real Santa. The final moments between a betrayed Lucie and The Doctor are heart-breaking. (4)
