...anyone? I adore Stanwyck, one of the most charismatic and spectacularly talented screen actresses of all. Anyone who says 'golden age' acting style was stilted and unconvincing next to the great actors of today (and I've seen it said many times...) should take a long hard look at Barbara's range.

My five favourites (with far too many of her movies still to see...)

1. Ball of Fire
2. Double Indemnity
3. The Lady Eve
4. The Bitter Tea of General Yen
5. The Strange Love of Martha Ivers

My top 10 of her films would be:

Double Indemnity
The Lady Eve (One of the great screwball comedies)
Sorry Wrong Number
The Furies
Clash By Night
Meet John Doe
Golden Boy
Executive Suite
The Strange Love Of Martha Ivers
The Mad Miss Manton

Nice to see a mention for Sorry, Wrong Number. I couldn't quite get it into my own ten but I viewed it earlier this year and liked it plenty. Stanwyck is excellent in it, her ability comes to the fore here considering she spends most of the film in her bed!

I've always wanted to look out some of her films, but have been turned off of Double Indemnity due to the cheesy (imo) Fred MacMurray. I really fancy Sorry, Wrong Number though and should get around to watching that asap.

I think you could well be surprised by Fred MacMurray in Double Indemnity. A less cheesy performance you're never likely to see. He's one of the reasons I rate that film No. 1 in my list of top 50 favourite noirs. It's truly one of the great American classics, and you're doing yourself no favours by avoiding it.

Ditto. Wilder gave MacMurray an entire different character, one he took to The Apartment as well. It's like song and dance man Dick Powell becoming the greatest Marlowe on screen - they had the talent to escape the stereotype.
