do you have your own 'core' group of films that you have to keep on getting in the lastest format and all the rest you are ok with keeping at DVD (or even VHS)

i did the whole VHS thing then replaced the 'core' films with dvd straight away when they first emerged, but left alot of non core films as vhs (and obviously alot of dvd from 2000 onwards) - but am now in the process of upgrading the core films to BR, and alot of the non core films that were vhs to dvd(as many of them are 0.01p on amazon )

my 'core' movie sets - Bond, Superman, Star Trek, Star Wars, Indy, Alien/Predator/AvP, Terminator, Blade Runner, Apes, 2001/10, Mad Max, Highlander, Matrix, Carpenter - EFNY&LA/The Thing82/11, Verhovan - Robocop/TotalRecall/Starship Troopers (ordinarily it would just be the first installments for Robo/SST but its cheaper to get the sets)

 I pretty much buy every version of Blade Runner that comes out.

I have the following:





And I bought just the Final Cut on Bluray.

And I still want to buy this new set, because it has ALL the versions on Bluray.

Back to the Future, Ghostbusters and Lethal Weapon for me.I have had all of them on VHS, DVD and now Blu. I was seriously considering getting the Ghostbusters steelbook at one point but I thought better of it. For now.

Yeah, I want that Ghostbusters steelbook as well, simply because I don't like the silly blue-coloured packaging of the previous release. "Look, we'll make it blue because it's blu-ray!" Completely incongruent with the tone and feel of the film, as daft as that may sound, but that famous logo looks so much better against its original black blackground.

One film I keep upgrading is The Omen. Standard VHS - Widescreen VHS - Standard DVD - The Omen boxset (which I only really got for the extra features) - and now the blu-ray. Probably won't have to upgrade it for quite some time. Same thing here for Lethal Weapon, Poltergeist, The Haunting, Die Hard and Burton's Batman, gone through so many versions it's ridiculous.

 So far the only titles I've upgraded to DVD are the following.

BTTF Trilogy
Batman Anthology
Batman Begins
The Dark Knight
Jurassic Park
The Thing
Shaun of the Dead
Hot Fuzz

Of the above I owned all but Hot Fuzz, SotD, Batman Begins and TDK on VHS as well. The wife is getting me the Alien Anthology for Xmas and I have the following on my "to upgrade" list which I'll eventually get round to buying on Blu.

Jaws
The Matrix
Brazil
Ghostbusters
Die Hard 1-3

All of which I owned on VHS apart from Brazil.

 Replace homer's name with mine in his post above and add a second copy of the first DVD box set pictured, every DVD release, every retail VHS release, two rental VHS releases, and one rental betamax.

On Saturday I also pulled the trigger on the new limited edition blu ray...


Otherwise, I generally sell or pass on older versions, unless there are any significant differences between them, or if there is some rare/collector's value about them.

I do still have my big box VHS rental (the one with the puffy cover) for Blade Runner. Somehow never got round to putting it in the charity shop pile.

Oh I drop and run now - the only time you get parking outside the best shop to use is well before working hours. Stop the car, drop off bags at door, off you go. If they don't want it hopefully they'll get something for recycling it - some places apparently do still take VHS. And some shops do sell them too - not snooty ones like Oxfam Book/film specialists of course, but little hospice shops type things.

 I had only amassed about 30 VHS tapes before DVD came along when I was 18, and at that point II hadn't quite reached the level of obsession with BR as I would do later in life.

In terms of "triple purchases" - VHS/DVD/BR - so far it's the following:

The Godfather Trilogy
Jurassic Park (I had the cool fossillised VHS box set)
LA Confidential

That's it, I think.

The majority of my VHS (I probably still have 100 or so) doesn't have a DVD release yet. I've been chucking them when they do though, although I realised in the great clearout I hadn't checked for a while as Dancing in the Dark is still there. The other ones I've kept are the ones I won from an old film magazine that didn't bother checking your age when you won - they include Tremors and Best Seller.

I've upgrading too many to mention - if it's cheap and it's superior to the DVD, upgraded.

Had a MASSIVE VHS collection, then DVD and now Blu-ray. I hope 4K doesn't come along anytime soon...

some e.gs for me:

Superman series:
I-IV vhs 'Superheroes' box set (1988 - although i didnt get them in the box), I&II dvd boxset (2000 - annoyingly you couldnt get III/IV on R2 dvd for a good few years and then only in a new 4 movie set), The Ultimate Collection 13 disc dvd tin set (2006 - about 70 quid at the time which i was perfectly fine with as it was an incredible set with the brand new Donner Cut of II with the long lost Brando footage, the never before seen deleted IV scenes, the brilliant Returns docs and loads of Reeve docs - thought it could never be surpassed...), Blu Ray 8 disc set (2011 - with the Return to Krypton opening which, along with the Prometheus 3D blu ray, was instrumental in me going 'blu.' Has got to be the last word on the Reeve/Returns films. think it started off at about £30, i got it at 17 and thought that was a bargin until i saw it in sainsbury the other day for £12!!)

Blade Runner - theatrical VHS, Directors Cut VHS, 5 disc dvd set (like superman tin set thought this would be the last word...even better got it for £5!), Blu Ray set (soon..when it comes way down in £)

i was abit lucky with Bond as i got them all on VHS up to Dalton and only got the 4 brosnans on dvd, but never got around to getting the rest on 2 disc dvd, so will (eventually) just pick up the BR set when it drastically comes down in price...and some others like Mad Max, robocop, total recall, i never got around to getting on dvd so it will go from vhs to BR (again when they are more reasonable to buy)

its good that you can still get a fair price selling dvds, which lessens the blow somewhat getting the BRs - but you literally cant give vhs away now...shame i didnt have the foresight to sell them all about 10 years ago when wouldve got at least a couple of quid for each one ...heck i think i was still buying the odd one back then! annoying as it was obvious dvd was going to wipe them off the map

 The Godfather Trilogy, Jaws, Alien Saga and the Star Wars films for me. Others, eg Die Hard or Lethal Weapon I'll pick up if cheap.

I really want the Bond Blus to alongside my full VHS collection ( well, up to Tomorrow never Dies) my briefcase filled with DVDs (up until Die Another Day) but am waiting for a price drop. I've already got the box with a few of the bond films on blu too

 I had hundreds of VHS tapes when DVD came out and I still have a good portion of the. I did bin many when I got the film s on DVD, but I worked it out a few years back that to upgrade to DVD for my remaining VHS films would cost at least £1500. I'd rather save the money. I still have three VHS players I can watch on whenever I want . As of now, the only film I've got on Blu that I've also had on DVD is Jaws, and I only got that for The Shark Is Still Working. I'm keeping the DVD though. Also, as I never owned Jaws on VHS I can't say I've ever owned any film in more than two formats.

 Main ones for me Star Wars - 5 versions


Also managed 5 versions of Alien/Aliens (w/s VHS, "Facehugger" Trilogy Box Set VHS, Alien Legacy DVD, Alien Quadrilogy DVD & Alien Anthology Bluray)

Other than that I think I've managed at least 3 versions of the following (VHS/DVD/Blu)
Jurassic Park
Close Encounters
ET
The Thing

Jaws BD is on the wish list - altho I did double dip with the DVD already!

I've got a few others I really want to upgrade, but when I first started buying Blu-ray I promised the wife I wouldn't be re-buying all my DVD's on BD (at least not straight away )
