I really need to try and get caught up properly on my list again, but a few thoughts from the past few weeks.

Argo - A brilliant piece of cinema. I'm not convinced Argo will win best picture/director, but it'll deserve it if it does. I do think John Goodman might get a best supporting nom/win though. I know Alan Arkin has the showier role, but given who Goodman is playing, it might get him the votes. Ten years ago, who'd have thought Ben Affleck would turn into one of the best directors America have to offer?

Sinister - Some really atmospheric scenes, but mostly my ability to give a fuck was quite low. Largely because it didn't seem to know what it wanted to be for the most part.

Skyfall - The most fun I've ever had with a Bond film, some stunning set pieces and Craig actually makes me care about the character. You know that fall at the beginning? That's the height Craig pisses on Roger Moore's Bond from.

Oh, and Pirates FINALLY clicked properly with me, gone from enjoyable but not brilliant to one of the best animated films in the last few years.

What do you think will at this point?

I'd be happy with both/either getting a nomination/a win. Arkin seemed to have more screen time than Goodman and the better lines, but you're right, Goodman has the real person aspect going for him. Of course, if Arkin hadn't won a few years back then I think it might be different.

At first, I was stunned because I thought you meant Caribbean before I read the rest of the sentence. Then I laughed at how Gimli would take the news. And then I realised.

Damn fine post. Damn fine.

I'm not sure what it is, but the fact that he has makes me really quite happy. I think it's because he got a lot of shit for Gigli and his personal life (the latter of which I rarely give a fuck about when it comes to appreciating somebody's body of work), and yet he always seemed a decent guy.

IMPQUEEN 2012

01. I Know Where I'm Going (Michael Powell / Emeric Pressburger, 1945) UK

This is on in the cinema around my birthday. I may be getting a treat

Argo did very little for me. I thought the script was a mass of cliches - look, problems in intelligence agencies, but look, solved, type thing.  Once Affleck turned up the first time in the dissemble I was waiting for I realised we were getting some kind of pastiche. A great set of actors (apart from two whose performances did nothing for me, including the lead) mouthing very familiar lines, ridiculous 'just in times' that conflicted with the 'true story' claims, the 'person who complains the most it doesn't work and OH LOOK he saves the day'.

And that true story thing was the problem. It was such a straight thriller with all the normal highs and lows that the whole thing just seemed, to me, quite silly.

At first, I was stunned because I thought you meant Caribbean before I read the rest of the sentence. Then I laughed at how Gimli would take the news. And then I realised.

  • A Diary for Timothy (Humphrey Jennings, 1945) - 8 Oct
  • Fires Were Started (Humphrey Jennings, 1943) - 6* Oct

  • Quick question for anyone who has seen these and any other Jennings films. If I were going to get just one of the 2 BFI releases, which one's the best? Vol 1 has 15 short films, Vol 2 features Listen To Britain, Fires Were Started and 3 others.

    Toss a coin. It's like Sophie's Choice

Also, Rinc's got his score wrong. And isn't Diary on the 2nd volume too? They're chronological and Diary was the end of the war.

But it's the story I think is silly.

And it seems to think I would odd given I like so many of the films it's riffing off? Conspiracy stuff, intelligence & government in the 70s is more my thing than the great white whales of cinema that came out of the decade.

You just hate good things. Admit it. You'll be a happier person.

As for Jennings, I need to check my copy to be certain, but I think Diary is going to be on vol 3.

My fault - I watched Diary after I first watched Vol 2 so got confused. Checked my copy and it isn't there. I'm beginning to wonder where the hell Vol 3 is!
