Something i've been thinking about recently. Is it possible to make a truly amazing movie these days that is succinct and short? I know in the old days, movies were a lot shorter and that there are a large no. of classic films that are less than 90 mins long (my recent Universal Monster Blu Ray set has confirmed this!) but from the modern age, what are the best examples of an amazing film that is less than 90 mins long, or at least short in length in film terms? I'd be interested to know opinions on this, as most great movies seem to need the extra time to establish themselves.

No problem good buddy

Crimson tide. Perfect in every way, characters strong, tension high, a masterclass in concise movie making.

I hate overlong movies.

It's also nearly two hours long.

Phone Booth is a good example, nice and tight.

Source Code? I think thats about 90 minutes. Can't think of too mant recent films I've seen that've clocked under 90 minutes. I think The Raid and District 9 may just be over 90 minutes but are still fairly short compared to most films.

Well, I admit I haven't timed it , but I remember the original Empire review stating that it all took place in 89 mins!
That must have been a dream then.
It's not 2 hrs though surely, anyway it's a good movie, albeit irrelevant to this post :(

Made In USA is positively perfect at 84 minutes, while Pickpocket, which is possibly the greatest film of all time is only 75mins. Most of the Chaplin silents and Harold Lloyd flicks come in at around the 60 minute mark too.

Whilst i definitely agree that a lot of older movies qualify as films were shorter back then, but from the modern age?

Reservoir Dogs is fairly short. I mainly remember this because when it wasn't available on video for two years they used to regularly show it at various cinemas in town and I went to loads of 9pm screenings and never once missed the last bus home (I think that may be the most thrilling anecdote I've ever told on here).
Funnily enough, whenever I have a criticism of a film these days it tends to be that it was too long (The Dark Knight Rises) or too short (Killing Them Softly).
I'm surprised by some of the films listed on here. I had no idea the likes of Commando and Pickpocket were that short - the latter probably because I watched it at college with a horrific hangover and it seemed to go on for days (I think it's high time I watched it again) and the former because every childhood viewing invariably involved gratuitous use of the rewind and slow motion buttons, mainly for the violence but occasionally to show some poor Commando virgin that bit when the blue crash-mat wanders into shot.

Films I personally like that are under 90 minutes-

Cobra
Child's Play
The Fog
House II
Rocky IV (Wiki says 90 mins but I'm sure it runs at 88/89)

No, I liked it a lot. It just felt like a bigger movie than it's running time suggests.
