 I have to ask, are things like Killing in the Name and Bring Your Daughter to the Slaughter actually allowed then? Not just because they're both really shit, but surely a song isn't a Christmas song just because it was number one at Christmas? And Bring Your Daughter wasn't even that, Cliff Richard was the Christmas number one.

 There's loads of Christmas number ones that aren't christmassy, I would say no to them all if I was running this. But then I'd probably say no to wintery ones as well. It would be nice if, y'know a Christmas song won the Christmas poll.

 I think including wintery ones makes sense, just because otherwise you might get a lot of people struggling to fill lists, but most of the actual Christmas number ones are, as you say, not about Christmas. I think a Christmas one will still walk it though. Probably Fairytale because everyone (except Gimli) likes it or a carol (In the Bleak Midwinter ftw). And if Christmas number ones are allowed then you're basically allowing some of the worst shit ever recorded - The Blobby song, Military Wives, Alexandra Burke's cover of Hallelujah, Bohemian Rhapsody... On the plus side we could all vote for a couple of Beatles songs and the Pet Shop Boys cover of Always on My Mind.

I think - if they were Christmas Number One but weren't at all festive, Christmassy or at all seasonal, then no.

But would you class songs like Winter Wonderland, or Let it Snow, as winter songs then? Because they don't mention Christmas at all, yet I'd say they were definately Christmas songs. As Rawlinson says, so many Christmas songs aren't about Christmas.

Yeah - multiple covers are fine. Though for carols, I think it doesn't matter as much, unless its a particular arrangement.
