Pierce Brosnan overheard - 5/11/2012 9:52:54 AM

I found myself sitting next to Pierce Brosnan at a local restaurant in Surrey yesterday (he ordered the lamb roast, if you're interested). The friend he was dining with sang the praises of Skyfall and the direction they're taking the Bond franchise: more gritty and Bourne-like, getting rid of the exploding pens and invisible cars. You get the picture. He was seemingly oblivious to the fact that poor old Pierce was uncomfortable with the conversation. "It's funny, I have no interest in it at all," remarked Pierce. Funny that.

He also recently confused which of his Bond films Halle Berry and which Michelle Yeoh were in. He mixed them up. He's an actor, it doesn't really matter if he doesn't care about films made in a series after they leave, does it? There are many actors who don't even care about the films they are in and don't watch them (Ralph Fiennes and the Harry Potter films for example).It's just a job they get paid to do.

I'm sure you're right. But I know that at the time he was 'sacked' from the franchise, he was a little put out. Still, we'll always have Goldeneye - one of the better Bonds in my opinion.

You should rename this thread 'Actors Who Really, Really Don't Care About The Films They Are In' as it could be an interesting subject.

The one that amazed me was the lead actress in Alien Vs Predator (I quite like the movie by the way).

On the director's commentary she pops in for about half an hour on her way to a premiere or something. She clearly has no idea what the film is about. She keeps asking the director the most basic questions about the aliens. These are questions that anyone who has watched Alien, and maybe Aliens as well, could answer. She obviously never watched the Alien or Predator films before, during or after shooting. I mean when she read the script was it just pure gobbledygook that she didn't understand? Did it not occur to her during the X months spent filming that it might be worth a few hours of her time to comprehend what she was acting in?

I understand she didn't care, but how could she star as the nominal lead in a film and not have the faintest idea what it was about? How did she handle the press interviews?

Listen to the commentary, it's worth half an hour of your time. She has no idea about the life cycle of the alien, which someone could have explained to her in five minutes.

I heard Tarantino say, on the Jonathon Ross Show, that when he was thinking of directing Casino Royale he would have used Pierce Bronson.
That has to be gutting for Pierce

Reminds me of the recent Tommy Lee-Jones interview where the interviewer asked him what Captain America was about and he replied "I have no idea".

Yeah, and some people went nuts over his remarks about Transformers, forgetting that the dude never met any of the other actors as he was stuck in a recording booth and he probably only ever got his lines in the script. Especially for the second film was was being re-written constantly.

I can understand the problem if someone doesn't know anything about a film they are promoting but outside of that, I don't see anything wrong with an actor not giving a shit about a project. It's a job, they need to make their money not everybody who worked on Transformers, Captain America or an Alien spin-off are going to be fans of that particular topic.

This is one peeve I have with some actors in films. In seems to me that there a lot of actors out there who aren't actually big fans of films. You'd think someone involved with films would love it with all of their heart, now I know that every director is a film geek regardless of if they're good or bad directors you can tell they love film. But I don't get that with a bunch of actors, I feel that if there were more actors who were film fans they wouldn't pick as much shit films. I see an actor in a horrible film and I think, "You saw what the directors previous work was like, you know what the writers previous work is like, you know whether or not this kind of film works or not. I know you may want to get paid but at least WANT to be in a good film"

Michael Caine has been quite open about this for most of his career, and John Cusack (with his "three for them, one for me" mantra) also freely admits that most of his work is purely for the money and contacts to fund more personal projects.

I've never understood why people get so upset about actors saying negative things about a project - you can't tell me that if Uwe Boll offered you a million pounds to spend a couple of hours voicing a CGI character you'd turn it down because it had a poor script, you didn't know (or care) what it was about, or because it was a shit film (which is a given cos it's Boll).

Tarantino could still do something like that with Brosnan as a Bond style character but his name and 00 number never mentioned (therefore tapping into the whole James Bond/007 is a codeword/number myth) - a retro spy film as a kind of homage to all the Connery Bonds/Avengers/Flint/UNCLE (wasnt QT attached to UNCLE at one point?)

like a Brosnan Never Say Never but rated 18. set it in the 60s or maybe even the 80s (Brosnan was in few 80s spy thrillers)

This is slightly different, but also kinda similar - a friend of mine is related to a woman who's in quite a lot of TV adverts, which she absolutely hates doing as her main passion (and her "day job", if you like) is Shakespeare. Not sure if she's RSC B-team, or another Shakespeare company. But anyway, she loves the stage and paarticularly Shakey. BUT the theatre and Shakespeare work alone does not pay enough money ("for the way of life she has become accustomed to" probably should be added, but I don't know for sure - either way, the point is valid) and she realises that she HAS to act in things she doesn't like if she wants the money. Same as John Cusack in my previous example.

As for some actors who appear not to be film fans - well, maybe some of them are similar to those Michelin star chefs who spend 18 hours a day working with food and when they get home the last thing they want to eat is caviar with a sea cucumber foam and edible sand, so they just chuck in a shitty Walls sausage roll. Or, maybe they do it cos it's the only thing they're really good at - another mate of mine is an electrician by trade and also has an IT build and repair business. He actually doesn't particularly like either of them, but he's VERY good at both and would struggle to make a living with anything else.

Acting of any kind is such a precarious career that it wouldn't surprise me if your friend's relative is doing the ads to make ends meet. I mean, the "day job" could go at any time, couldn't it?

Absolutely, especially at that level - she is (apparently) a VERY good stage actress, but she is not a "name" and, whilst we may all be familiar with her face from the ads she's been in (she was in all of the Daz Eastenders ads), we're not talking a multi-million pound salary from Shakespeare stage appearances.
