So, we have our director. Wonder what this means for Star Trek3?

Interesting. Hope he can reign in his lens flare, cos as much as I dont mind it in Star Trek and Super 8, it isnt right for Star Wars. Still, Ive liked most of what JJ has done, so I'll give him the benefit.

You just know Star Trek Into Darkness will have a bastard of a cliffhanger or something like that and we'll NOW have to wait more than a few years for the 3rd.

JJ does seem a logical choice to continue Star Wars

No, he won't. It'll be a fresh story, but with a Mark Hamil cameo to link to the original series. Just like Star Trek (2009).

As for Star Trek (3): Just get in Bryan Singer already. It'll stop him from trying to reboot Battlestar Galactica at least.

Hopefully it will be more than just cameo's for the established heroes. If they're not a big part of the story (even if it focuses on their children), then it wouldn't really be Episode VII at all, will it... it'd be Episode I of a new story.

Oh God, I hope it isn't more than cameos.

The prequels should have shakened off the shackles of the original trilogy and told an original story based around the Clone Wars with Anakin merely being a Jedi that betrays the Order rather than The Messiah of the Force.

The new trilogy should concentrate on finding and telling a good story with new characters rather than heaving out the old ones who, let's face it we'll be either tired of by now (C3PO) or are hardly looking their best (Luke/Leia).

Let's have smugglers! Space pirates! A fallen Empire in chaos!

You think the story of Anakin Skywalker shouldn't have focused on Anakin Skywalker? Right...

The Original Trilogy wasn't the story of Anakin Skywalker, so why did the prequel trilogy have to be? Sure, Vader had an arc, but he wasn't the main character.

Anakin didn't need to be the central character in the prequels, there were plenty of other ways they could have done the Clone Wars and the fall of the Jedi. By trying to tie it to the Original Trilogy so much, Lucas really did write himself into a hell of a mess. The next trilogy should try and be as free of that as possible.

I just see it as a saga about the Skywalker family. So I'm expecting Ben Skywalker and Jaina Solo to be the lead characters of the new films, with Luke, Han and Leia showing up not as major characters, but important background characters. Luke is the Grand Master, and Leia is an important diplomat, after all.

I think that's the difference. I never saw Star Wars as the 'story of the Skywalker family'. That's something that the Expanded Universe has taken and run with. For me, Han Solo was always front and centre.

The Original Trilogy, for me, was "Group of Heroes take down evil Empire", so I would have liked to see the prequel trilogy be how the Republic fell and how the Empire rose. Now, that is sort of covered in the prequel trilogy, but it's more a focus on Anakin who is written to be a character single-handedly screws everything up, but Lucas over-egged the pudding.

Anakin was conceived by the Force. He was The Chosen One. He did everything for love, etc etc

Instead, Anakin, Obi-Wan, Yoda and Palpatine should have been pieces of a much bigger story, which by the time the finale of Episode III came around should have made them the last people standing. In short, Episode I should have started in the middle of the Clone Wars with the Jedi already on the back foot from a growing evil, and Anakin should have just been a plain old Jedi growing increasingly disillusioned with how things are going...

Or something...

OT was all about the Skywalkers for me too. At its core it Lukes story, from humble farm boy to powerful Jedi master.

As an episodic continuation, Id be amazed if there wasnt a real focus on the family.

I'm sure they'll go this route, it would make sense but considering Episode I-III don't really focus on family, there's no reason why VII-IX should.

Plus, and be truthful here, does anyone REALLY want to see Hamill, Fisher and Ford back in their roles? Ford is far from the charismatic devil he was in his youth. And Hamill and Fisher should probably stick to voice work and screenwriting. And I say that as a fan of both of theirs.

I read an article a few weeks ago that said he'd been offered it and turnt it down. It was in blastr if anyone is interested.

I haven't seen super 8 but am quite a fan of his work but him directing arguably the two biggest sci-fi series at the same time seems a little odd to me.

I thought the prequel trilogy should never had been told on screen.
I go as far to say what we get in the original Star Wars films was enough for us to imagine what the past was like.

Some stories dont really need to be told. Its like Spielberg going back to make a sequel to Close Encounters of the Third Kind and seeing what happened to Roy Neary, but we don't really need to know and similar could easily be said of Ridley Scotts Prometheus and soon to be sequel to Blader Runner.
Its ambiguity or mystery are some films greatest strenghs, and I think that could be applied to Lucas's early S.W films.
