Agreed; I'd really like to see him back. If they can't get him I hope they don't use the character, create a new CIA contact if one is necessary

This is one thing that kinda bugs me how Craig's films have played out though. We've had the first two slowing introducing the mythos and exploring Bond as a fresh agent then jumped to Skyfall where he's suddenly an old dog learning new tricks in a game for younger men. I would have liked to seen a closer timeframe to CR/QoS and then that way continue to see his frienship with leiter develop more naturally. If they do bring him back now its gonna have to be straight in as firm friends, given how much time as passed between qoS and SF.

Yes it does seem odd that they jumped way forward.

I also hope Jeffrey Wright returns and I do want Quantum to return.

I want Mr White to get his just desserts!

He wasn't exactly a fresh agent in CR, merely a fresh 007 agent, we can presume he'd been around for a while before that. But I agree the jump did seem a bit off

I keep hearing different stories but what is the official version. Is the Daniel Craig era a reboot? (Which would explain Judi Dench as 'M').

I definitely see them as a reboot and an entirely new series with as much connection to the other Bond movies as Nolan's Batman movies have to Batman & Robin.

Dench just happens to have played the same role in both series

If it is a true reboot, then that saddens me.

Lee Tamahori had an excellent idea of how you could have different Bonds in different eras...

He believed that James Bond 007 was just a name MI6 would give to a secret agent so that there is really no James Bond.

This doesn't really add up though, as Roger Moore's Bond made a few nods to the death of Tracy in OHMSS.

It's a good idea but it has never been believable as there have been sly references throughout. Also with CR (2006) Craig is named as James Bond before he receives his 007 status. Maybe when Craig resigns the role they might use that idea instead of rebooting all over again

It actually never fails to amaze me how many people to this day didn't realise that Casino Royale was a reboot. (It was even dubbed Bond Begins when it was in pre-production.) That said, the constant nods to the old movies in Skyfall (in particular, the gadget-equipped Aston) is potentially more than a bit confusing.

I remember all the 'Bond Begins' stuff and the back to basics approach, however I am sure there has never been an official statement to say it is a proper reboot in that all the continuity goes out of the window.

That's what has confused and annoyed many. You are right, Skyfall has merely added more weight to the 'not a reboot' theory.

If this is the case, and Barbara Broccoli is cagey on this issue, then Judi Dench can't be 'M' for Pierce replacing Admiral Miles Messervy & be Bond's first boss also. I know it is only a movie, and for some daft reason if it was just made official that it was a reboot then fair enough.

"The old ways are the best" was a motif in Skyfall which clearly hints at the continuity of what surely is now referred to as 'classic ' Bond.

The fact that you can buy a Bond boxset which includes ALL 23 Bond films is also confusing. It's clear to me that the Craig Bonds should not be included in a boxset with any other Bond films as they are a completely separate series.

I would agree with that.

I think it actually makes more sense to old dinosaurs like me who love the film interpretation on Bond rather than the book version. I still think if the Book Bond was on screen it will die. He wasn't really that heroic and pretty cold and cruel. Not an action hero type. And I don't think Craig is the Bond of the books either.

I'm sure there has been no official mention of a reboot as they know most fans would go ape shit.

Bond has a style and formula that has lasted 50 years. It would be stupid to throw that all away and I actually th k Skyfall is a massive step heading back to the traditional formula which we will see in Bond 24.

Guns, girls & gadgets.

Casino Royale is very much about starting with a clean slate.

I don't know how clearer they could have made it.

This is quite interesting Clicky especially the bit about M's (Judi Dench) real name differing between Brosnan and Craig's films. I have to say that as well as aknowledging CR as a reboot, I've always seen that she is playing two different characters, just holding the same post. The M she played from Goldeneye to Die Another Day is very different to the M that we see in Casino Royale through to Skyfall, highlighted by her contrasting relationship between Bond. I was talking to a friend in work today who also didn't realise that Casino Royale was a reboot and not just a prequel to Dr.No. I think what muddied it for a lot of people is that even though it was a reboot, it kept the original Bond theme, the gun barrel sequence (albeit changed significantly in CR and then placed at the end for QoS and SF) and the inclusion of Judi Dench. Whats interesting though, is that whilst I felt Skyfall did confuse the issue further with the nods to the previous continuity, for him, he said it made it clear for the first time in Craig's tenure that this was a seperate canon to what came before...

If by excellent idea, you mean awful idea then yes it is. It just compounds the fact that James Bond is the worst spy ever if ALL 007s are named James Bond. Are all 006s called Alec Trevalyn?

But they didn't come out and say officially it was a reboot. Merely seeing the origins of Bond as a young agent starting out.

I'm all for the reboot as it makes far more sense to everything.

CR was never officially acknowledged as a reboot and that is what caused the problem. Barbara Broccoli has dodged the question and they are at pains to avoid such speculation!

Yes it was mooted as a reboot, Bond Begins, and Back to Basics, but as we have seen they are quite clear that this is still the same 007.

As for Bond's chronology never working, it has worked well enough, especially with the Connery movies and SPECTRE. We have to accept that Bond always moves in the present day and if we keep to that then the chronology does work. Every movie or TV series if it runs long enough always contradicts itself somewhere along the line. But the whole M scenario is a major one. I think if they had picked someone else to play M there would have been no problem at all.

Btw if someone can find direct quotes from Barbara Broccoli or Michael G. Wilson re: the reboot then please post the links here.

I want it to be a reboot as it makes far more sense. But the evidence isn't there... Or is it?
