Alien, Predator, Star Wars TESB, Clockwork Orange, and others were given luke warm reviews when they came out but now are deemed classics.

There are numerous films that have come out now which have been lauded (like Looper) which I don't regard & may not stand the test of time.

What films which have come out recently (the last 3 years) that have got negative to mixed reviews, do you think will be classics in 20 years time?

Prometheus. Whether it'll be deemed a classic or not I don't know, but I certainly think it will be looked upon more fondly.

This thread is gonna basically turn into people listing the crap films they like and trying to get people to believe they're misunderstood classics right?

These films mentioned :John Carter,Van Helsing,Transformers have no chance in being regarded as a 'classic',because frankly they weren't good films. They are your typical cliched big-blockbuster-summer fair. They have little depth in originality or intelligence, these films really do work on the most basic of screen writing, while the overly used CGI is just the eye-candy to bring it a certain audience.

Prometheus wont go down as a classic either because of elements of poor screen writing.
I enjoyed Prometheus but I am certainly not ignorant to dismiss its criticisms, which it has a fair few.

As to what I think will go down as a recent classic, well, I haven't got a clue but I pretty sure I know what movies wont go down as a classic.
The films mentioned have nothing going for them in that regard as the highest accolade they're ever going to get are as fanboy-cult-movies.

I don't think it will be regarded as a classic but already, just four years after it's release Speed Racer has gone from a lot of people thinking it was bollocks to being recognised as something quite unique and fun. I think that will improve even more over time.

We can but hope!! And I'm not being tongue in cheek. I've said for years that Van Helsing will, in 30 years, be as highly regarded as the likes of Blade Runner

Were Alien and Predator really given luke warm reviews when they came out?
That surprises me, I can remember Predator coming out and it was really hyped and highly regarded (I was a bit too young when Alien came out but again, I'm sure it was rated very highly)

The Dark Knight Rises

I know this is a joke but I think in a few years after the hype and expectation has died down, Rises will be appreciated more by fans (cos it's still pretty good from critics standpoint) and it will stand on an equal footing with Begins and Dark Knight. May still be the weakest but you wont have people saying things like its complete garbage or its the phantom menace of the batman films or other retarded statements.

I don't think it will be a classic but I do feel that Quantum of Solace will be better thought of in the future. I think it's a great Bond film, and a great sequel as well.

Craig portrayal of Bond's loss I think is fantastic, focusing the grief of her death into rage at her betrayal and those who used her against him. His urge to destroy everything Quantum related leads to some great action scenes, and although the villain's plot is not as dastardly as people may have liked I think it perfectly served the purpose of introducing Quantum as a genuine threat. I know that Skyfall supposedly ditches the Quantum arc and I have no doubt that this will vindicate the feelings of a lot of QoS's critics but Goldfinger ditched SPECTRE. I hope they come back to Quantum as I think it's important for Bond to have a consistent threat looming in the background.
