Watched Mystery Alaska the other day (recommended on unsung gems post)

not at all what i expected given the poster being some ice skate wearing folk supposedly shagging in the snow- was expecting porky's on ice! when in fact was quite a sweet drama about small town folk, like northern exposure.

is this why it tanked?

Supernova- the trailer is accompanied by 'mama told me not to come' and makes out its a rollicking space adventure. turns out its serious and quite scary (an unsung gem?)

heres the trailer... click here: supernova trailer link
"if you cant stand the heat, get out of the universe" classic

is this why it tanked?

any other examples of when marketing dept get it really wrong, posters, trailers, merchandise?? and the result is a big flop?

Dredd and John Carter. Count Hugo with that.

Definitely John Carter as Devi has already stated. Worse marketing campaign for a mega budget movie in the longest time. Absolutely awful, no wonder it bombed. Although i think the movie is great!

That didn't exactly bomb though, disappoint yes, but not bomb ala Battleship or Dredd.

To be fair Battleship did very well internationally.

It did decently but it still bombed horrifically in the States, there's also the marketing budget which I doubt it reached with its 300 million revenue. It's pretty much a bomb ala John Carter.

Monsters - the greatest mis-sell via trailer in years. Great film though.

I'm still convinced Poseidon tanked in the US because the name of the film was upside-down on the poster.

And the Amazon customer reviews prove it.

It would have been even better with the alternate ending left in the film.
