no way Picnic is his worst film.

I've yet to see Mosquito Coast or The Last Wave, so in theory Picnic might not be Weir's worst film.

Sorry about the delay - I just didn't have the time to sit down and type up the poll thing yesterday in a site flyby. Report now finished, taking breath.

Genuinely, I was scrolling down and when I went back in to add the last 2 I scrolled up from the bottom and I assumed it was just two!

So there are 13 films not 12?

Yeah, when Reb was out of contact for a little while we weren't sure if she was going to be able to take part or not. So we did a second draw out of the people who missed out first time. That way if Reb wasn't back online then we'd have 12 people taking part, and 13 if she was. It just seemed better than risking running it with 11 and having people feel a bit left out because there was a space available.

Practical.

And you know if the real reason wasn't just because I assumed 12 and did a count then it wouldn't have been yours that was missing

It seems the advantage of getting bored and organising all the DVDs upstairs by imprint has paid off - Machuca easiest to find amid the Artificial Eyes and first up for me.

Okay you're excused for now..

Out of these films I love Royal Tenenbaums and King of Comedy, really liked Control and I have seen Galaxy Quest but I remember bugger all about it
I've found Shadow of a Doubt, Odd Man Out and For All Mankind on Youtube and added them to my (ever-growing) Watch Later list .

You should take part next time, scarface.

It's always fun to pick a great film and have no idea whatsoever what Gimli's opinion of it will be.

I've considered it but I'm so bad at trying to watch films so I can participate in various polls so I'm not exactly confident on the HOF. Also then there might be a possibility I'd have to sit through something like Van Helsing And I ever have a crack, I'm definitely nominating something with Brando in it, just for Gimli

People liking the film I pick seems weird. I'll have to go for a Michael Bay film next time.

Thankfully this is your last round as a long-termer and any attempts to nominate Michael Bay as a short-termer will be met with "Sorry, you missed out on the draw for this round"

It's one of the greatest non-US noirs - and Mason is just amazing, isn't he? I'd say it's a toss-up between him and Finney for performance of the round. And possibly Jackie Gleason.

So far...

For All Mankind - An amazing documentary with some stunning images, although I think it should have acknowledged in some way that it's using footage from other missions to tell the story of Apollo 11.

The King Of Comedy - Great performance, great writing, great film.

Odd Man Out - A fantastic first half that builds tension and makes full use of its great Mason performance dissipates somewhat into a second half that features some artist prick who comes close to ruining the film whenever he turns up. Great ending though.

Another interesting set.

Control and Machuca I've not seen or heard of before. And somehow I've never caught War of the Buttons, which disappoints me greatly now I'm reminded of it. My comments on the others.

For All Mankind - I think will struggle because of its documentary style. F for Fake did very well, but with Welles being Welles we are never too sure in that what is documentary and what is creative film. I've seen criticisms of FAM that this is footage edited together from several missions to one film. But what footage! And I forget how many stupid number of NASA archives they went through to make it. The film is at times awe-inspiring and after seeing Felix Baumgartner standing on a step on the edge of space is good timing to watch this. But something about the film leaves me with an "is that it feeling". A great left-field nom.

Galaxy Quest - Will struggle because of its subject matter, an outright comedy. And unfortunately because as a special FX comedy it has times where the comedy is not working and the FX are poor. Fun, but that's all and I'd have to agree from the films I've seen its in the weakest 3 of the nominations imo. Rawl really needs to organise a special comedy round in the future.

Gregory's Girl - I've just never got on with, I'm sorry. I just find it all very boring and feel like I've wasted my time watching this. Just not my cup of tea.

The Hustler - I think TRM & Rawl said its Newman's best performance in their opinion. I think this is arguable, but the best performance in the film is definitely George C. Scott's Bert Gordon. Can't believe elab talks about performance of the round and he doesn't get a nod. Some might find the middle sags. If the jury can get beyond this being a game about pool then it should make the final 3 imo. I'm also willing to argue that The Color of Money is a greatly under appreciated piece.

King of Comedy - I had a recent viewing of this. Let's get past the idea of where it ranks in the Scorsese or De Niro canon as it can only compete with what it is up against. I expect it to do well, but it would not be in my top 3.

Odd Man Out - I really hope has dark horse written all over it. Would make my final 3.

Picnic at Hanging Rock - I'm sorry I wanted to like this much more than I did.

Royal Tenenbaums - I've found for most people is marmite. I think its pretty good, but it would fall shy of my top 3.

Saturday Night Sunday Morning - Too long since I've seen this to really comment, but it should make it past the first round.

Shadow of a Doubt - For my tastes this is not the strongest round ever. So it would be in my final 3. But I'm not sure how others will view it.
