So what are the most awesome Visual FX scenes, take your pick, it's been an amazing year for action and FX movies.

For me, my personal favourite is (predictably if you know me) from Battleship. Just before the final act in the movie, our heroes are on the last out of 3 destroyer ships. They take out one of the final alien ships and think all is well until two of the shredder balls are despatched to take them out. They tear up the ship, then in one long long shot we follow several characters as they abandon ship with all kinds of carnage breaking out. The way this shot is put together is staggering. Obviously several plates have been filmed and cut together seamlessley. It all ends with our heroes jumping off the end of ship as it splits in two. Completely amazing FX. The whole movie is absolutely stunning in the FX department, but this scene was definitely one of the highlights.

Great moment! Not sure what my favourite of the year would be but this would be near the top.

For me, I think it's probably when David fires up the holographic starmap in 'Prometheus'. Probably the first time in years an effects sequence came close to making my jaw drop at its sheer beauty.

In second place, I'll throw in the practical effects shots in 'The Dark Knight Rises'. I love practical effects, as I generally find it easier to suspend my disbelief with good model work than I do with good CG.

But an honourable mention must go to 'Battleship'. Although the alien ships didn't do much for me (I've really grown to loathe the constant clicking, interlocking moving parts that 'Transformers' popularised and everyone now seems to be following), I absolutely cracked up with boyish glee when the Missouri... well, if you've seen it, I'm sure I don't have to say any more

OPEN YOUR EYES - very impressive set of gifs, but you don't think that's perhaps a massive Prometheus spoiler?

It was all stuff that was in the trailers though, and yes, they were spoilerific, though hardly OPEN YOUR EYES fault

Recently watched Men in Black 3 and i have to say that the first time jump sequence is easily one of the best FX scenes i've seen all year, especially in 3D

The Avengers had some great stuff with Hulk. Prometheus (although I didn't care much for the film) had some absolutely stunning CGI visuals, honestly some the best I've ever seen, or at least that I can think of right now.

Something that might get overlooked is Ted. In some scenes the bear looks really great, and it felt like it was actually there interacting with Marky Mark. Saying that, in some other scenes it looked pretty dodgy, but overall it really impressed me.

Pretty much everything from Prometheus, The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises. Obvious answers, I know, but fuck were those films pretty!

Specifically, I'd say the opening of Prometheus, as well as the sequence shown in the gif's in a post above. The entire final battle from The Avengers, plus the Helicarrier! And similarly in The Dark Knight Rises, the reveal of the Bat! And the attack on Gotham... stadiums caving in, bridges exploding. Epic!
