And it truly is an amazing decade for film. Already with Laughton and Cagney there's two of the best screen actors of all time captured in this list. And I'm still expecting some big hitters like Cary Grant, Claude Rains, Peter Lorre, Henry Fonda & Spencer Tracy to get a mention.

Interested to see how the top 40 pans out. I think The Blue Angel would be my pick. Its probably not the best film on the list either technically or in terms of story, but it just sucks me right in. I suspect that's from its heritage. Both as a German film (and I think German's do this almost metaphysical self-destruction so well - there's probably a 101 student essays on how the fall of the main protagonist mirrors the decline of the state in the same time). But also on the cusp of silent and talkie, it seems to still bangs up the emotions at level 11 on the screen. Which possibly shouldn't work, but its almost so dreamlike that it does.

Afraid I'm going to disappoint you as far as City Lights is concerned. I have to say that I'm not a Chaplin fan, with the exception of The Gold Rush; to me he has always come a distant third behind Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd as far as silent comedians are concerned.
However, I think you'll be pleased with the inclusion of a number of the others you have mentioned.
Pleased to see that you share my love of The Blue Angel. Marlene Dietrich was one of the great icons of the screen, and she features several times in the lists to come.


I take it you're not a fan of The Kid then? It's one of my favourite silent films.

Frankenstein is the best of the Universal horror lot
Vampyr has a great first twenty minutes, before giving up and becoming boring as hell
Island of Lost Souls is a great adaptation of one of my favourite books.

The Roaring Twenties is amazingly good, I love The 39 Steps, Kong, Captain Blood and 42nd Street all good too.

Young Frankenstein is a beautiful homage to the originals. To me it's Mel Brook's most successful parody.
You're right about 39 Steps not being the only Hitchcock in the list, and in fact The Master is fairly well represented over the next couple of decades as well.

Bride of Frankenstein I really enjoyed; it's a toss-up between this and the original in terms of quality

Duck Soup is also fantastic
The Old Dark House was a fun watch, but I wouldn't put it that high
Robin Hood is so much fun
Bringing Up Baby was one of the most annoying things I've ever seen

 Like All the King's Men, Falled Idol and I Walked With A Zombie a lot. Gilda, Dead Of Night and Brighton Rock are great. Spellbound is one of my least watched Hitchcock's.

 And for the 40s so far

I Know Where I'm Going - Personally I'd have had this much higher. Not my favourite P&P, but an absolutely beautiful film.

All The King's Men - I like the performances more than the film itself

The Little Foxes - Haven't seen

I Walked With A Zombie - Excellent choice, hope we see more of the Lewton films on the list.

Dead Of Night - One of the best anthology horror films ever made. Actually it's just one of the best horror films ever made.

The Fallen Idol - The lesser of that amazing trio of Reed films, but absolutely deserving of its place.

Gilda - Yeah, I like Gilda a lot.

Spellbound - Absolutely ridiculous, but so much fun.

The Rocking Horse Winner - Amazing choice, a film that's too often overlooked. I love the short story as well.

Brighton Rock - Yeah, great film.

 Love The Man In The White Suit, Odd Man Out, Green For Danger, Adam's Rib, Shadow Of A Doubt and the Magnificent Ambersons.

Can't remember much of Life and Death or Grapes Of Wrath and I can't stand The Red Shoes.

 The Shop Around the Corner is superb, the only one I really love from that set. I've yet to see any Preston Sturges film
