Awesome bit of serendipity - even though Felix was supposed to jump earlier this week and was only rescheduled to October 14th due to the weather, yesterday also happened to mark the 65th anniversary of Chuck Yeager becoming the first man to ever break the sound barrier. Amazing.

I was half looking at the laptop while watching it on BBC News and it was definitely a holy shit moment when he jumped!! The sheer weight of that guy's balls must have helped with the acceleration!!!

I didn't realise while watching it that the guy talking to him on the radio was the previous record holder, there was something quite inspiring about that and how supportive of him he was throughout the whole thing.

There is a feature length documentary coming next month, going to be worth a watch!

The moment he breaks the sound barrier apparently. How do they get a picture of that??

That looks like it could be from the CG mockup of the jump they released beforehand.

In the second decade of the 21st century, legacies are created in GIF form. I don't know whether that's awful or awesome.

Wait. Definitely awesome.

The less I see of those pictures the better. I mean, fair play to the guy, and that feels an overwhelming understatement, but he's still completely nuts in my book for even considering it, let alone actually doing it!!

Just the thought of spinning whilst travelling at 600-odd mph is enough to have me heading straight for the toilet!

Suppose this should really be in small screen now, but Space Dive, a 2 hour documentary about the jump, including new footage, is on Sun: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01nts6t

You know what this jump really put into perspective for me? Kittinger's jump in 1960. Think of all the years of planning and training and technology that went into Baumgartner's jump, then imagine what the fuck it must have been like to do that 50 years ago. Obviously at the time they were using the best technology that was available, but it honestly blows my mind whenever I think about it.

Short newsreel of the jump -

Both guys have big brass baws, that's all I'm saying.

Only just got around to watching it, it's well worth seeing, puts the incredible effort from everyone involved into perspective, and the HD footage of the jump is incredible...!

I watched it when it was on and, while being a great programme, I thought Felix was a bit of a dick.

Yeah, I know what you mean, but then again the pressure he was under to do that was clearly taking it's toll too...

It was just the way he was moaning about the suit, then pulling out, shouting at people in meetings. I'd have told the diva to fuck off and let that other test pilot that came in to test the suit (and never complained once) do the jump. Give him the fame.
