ORIGINAL: AxlReznor My wife's a biologist. But she specialises in mammals and birds so takes more of an interest in those than she would in invertebrates, etc. and actually jumps out of her skin every time she sees a spider. She'd probably be scared shitless of what looks like a giant monster, too. The moral? Not all biologists are into the same things... and I'm pretty sure none of them are into everything. Also, as I've said in another thread, people's demand for immediate answers to everything just stifles creativity. Seriously... why do the questions need to all be handed to everybody? Why not leave things open? I find that far more interesting (not to mention realistic) than having everything all neatly tidied up within two hours... no matter how unlikely the characters would find any in that scenario. Thats a fair point mate... My girlfriends a Biologist or at least a soon to be one Studying toxicology in the environment and you're right they all specialize in certain fields but even she found the whole Biologist as a complete tool! He was on the ship for that reason right to study what they find when they arrive. The problem i have with him is he scared shit of one of the greatest discoveries to humankind thats just a dead body... yet when he see's a cobra type snake alien thats behaving aggressive towards him he wants to shove his face in it... does that not come across to you as a little stupid? "hey come here, hello... it's ok"... please don't insult my intelligence that is stupid and insulting as no sane person would do that... after all would you grab a Cobra if it was behaving aggressive or not? my point in question. Thats where all my issues with this movie stem from... not the movie which is a good idea all be it a little convoluted... it's the characters mate they're idiots. They either come across as dicks or complete morons... half the cast were just put there to be killed. The best characters by a country mile was David and Shaw... but the rest are just annoying and the ending with the whole crash and the death of the pilots and Vickers was just pathetic! Vickers was an alright character mind! I like the fact they don't answer all the questions... it's the characters and bad writing that spoils the whole mood of the film... I was so glad when David but the black gel in Holloways drink he was behaving like a complete dick the whole movie and I loved it when he burned! I mean who takes their mask off in an Alien environment... what about deadly bacteria and microbes and the whole crew sit there saying "what you doing thats a bad idea" and this dick just takes it off so the rest of them like idiots do the same when a minute ago they were saying how dangerous it was, you get my point!!! arrhhhhh the characters are stuuuupid!! Rant over! I watched it again last night and I didn't get that the biologist was scared - he just followed the geologist more than anything when it was pointed out that everything in the ship was dead. Incidentally their are a couple of cracking deleted scenes on the dvd that show and explain why Charlie is being such a dick - don't actually know why they were taken out as they give a lot more to the character but I will concede your point that four or five of the characters are there simply there for cannon fodder. Honestly watched it again last night and I think it stands up as one of the better, more intelligent sci-fi fair and don't understand where all the hate is coming from; other than everyone was expecting an Alien film and didn't get one.
