What films do you think have dated prematurely? Goldeneye, one of my favourite Bonds I hasten to add, seemed to look ancient when I watched it on ITV recently.

The mobile phones in The Matrix look so strange to me now, even if they do still look a million times better than those stupid ugly things they had in the sequels

The same goes for every time I see those handheld scanners/communicators they have in Star Trek. Sure they can identify ailments, scan areas for threats, and communicate over vast distances in real time, but can they Angry Birds?

That's possibly not what you were looking Hood (), but that's what came to mind when I saw the thread.

That genuinely made me chuckle.

As for dated films, I caught Speed on Five the other night. One of my all time favourite movies, I love it, but I havent watched it in years. Parts looked and felt pretty dated though, and I noticed odd editing and odd sound editing all the way through, which I'd never caught before (for example, Annie screaming the line 'Here we gooooo..!' as the bus takes the tight turn, it's the same line and same delivery just looped twice, and it soudns weird!). A lot of the opening felt almost made for TV, it looked odd and the sets looked obvious and fake. Really strange. Still, once it's out on the streets it was great and even some dodgy rear projection and miniature effects during the finale didnt spoil it. But yea, there are elements that have dated.

I'll agree with Goldeneye too, some of the miniature effects make it feel quite old, and look very Thunderbird-ish. It isn't helped by some odd early nineties fashion either.

Probably because they were done by Derek Meddings, the same guy who did the effects for Thunderbirds. I have the same problem with Tim Burton's first Batman, especially the Batwing crash at the end.


Much as I love it, I think most of the technology in Hackers went out of date about a week after the movie came out.

Agree. Its still a good film, but for 'virtual reality' C-berg was about 8 years too late.

Natural Born Killers - in fact anything in the mid to late 90's (just before the internet & shiny mobile phones became the norm) that relies heavily on the media for storytelling I guess.

 The Lord of the Rings, specifically Two Towers & Return. CGI Legolas looks awful now and very plastacine-y. Same goes for Spiderman 1 and the hot air balloon scene.

While stop-motion has the charm and the much more human process in its inception.

Not to say that Stop-motion should get the benefit of the doubt though.Films such as Robocop2 particularly standout as rather dated in my opinion.

And strangely enough I think The Thing (2007) is a much more dated Film than that of Carpenters Classic ,even though it was created 25 years after the 1982 version.And for me it shows how CGI can even seem visually dated to past works,and in this case physical modelling and stop-motion.

Visually Starship Troopers is extremely nice and extreme to look at.
The CGI has so much depth that,I agree, it standouts even over some of todays CGI infested films.
For such a horrific film the CGI is beautiful at times.

I agree with both. I found it strange that Gollum was so good, and yet there's some really dodgy CGI like Leggy and those God-awful wet/dry scenes in The Fellowship with Sam and Smeagol's mate in Return.

When they remake this the cgi probably wont be half as good.

Absolutely criminal that it didnt get an fx oscar that year.

I'm internet 'friends' with Trey Stokes who worked as an animator on Starship Troopers. He recorded a commentary for it here

He also worked on Team America: World Police, Batman Returns (he was a penguin puppeteer), The Blob 88 (he was the titular Blob), The Abyss , Robocop 2, Species, Pet Sematary 2, Polar Express and created the Star Wars fan films 'Pink Five'.

Commentaries for the films in bold are also on the Down In Front page.

And said practical effects in the original still look amazing, not just good, now (with the exception of the stop-motion Blairmonster).
