Rules can be found here...Rules Thread

This months theme, is....

Autumn

OK, so you might have notices the "special rules" bit in the title - As you might have noticed last month there was an abortive theme of Autumn. I reckon that, as a theme, it is a pretty rock solid theme seeing as we're at the arse end of September and the reds and browns of autumn are very nearly upon us. But we can't have somebody decide the theme 3 months running, can we? Well I say yes we can with one caveat (seeing as I won the last round). We change up the rules for one month only.

OK So once again Autumn is being a fickle beast - So We'll change it to a completely free round, but with the special rules still applying

Special Rules for Round 8 only

The picture must have been taken between 30th September 2012 and 21st October 2012.

There is no limit on Post Processing - if you want to do HDR that's cool, If you want to stick an instagram filter on, that's cool, if you want to put Nicholas Cage on the moon that's not "cool", but it won't be against the rules this month. All I ask, is that you let us know what processing work you've done so we can make an informed decision.

So go out there and have some fun

Pos. Points
1st 25
2nd 18
3rd 15
4th 12
5th 10
6th 8
7th 6
8th 4
9th 2
10th 1

If you get no votes, you get no points (like a DNF in F1)

If you choose to enter, you have 21 days to post a picture that you have taken that meets the above criteria

New Rules for 2012 - Photoshopping is limited to Global Edits (i.e. they apply to the whole photo, not to one specific part) and cropping only

If you enter a picture from a previous round of the competition, you will be asked to find and enter an alternate photo.

Posting will finish on the 21st of October
Voting will run from 21st October to 28th October

This Months Entries are...

ok for those that don't have any post processing software

download gimpshop from here - http://gimpshop.com/

it's a pretty powerful editing suite, reskinned to look like photoshop - you can get an unskinned version called simply gimp

mind you you could also download a 30 day trial of photoshop cs6 or lightroom from adobe too.

Struggling with this one, it's not really Autumn!

I took my camera down the park this morning while walking the dog, there was one bush that's starting to change colour, but not worth a pic.
On the plus side i did slip in the mud and land on my ass. So an excellent morning!

have to agree - despite the waiting for a month things are still looking pretty green here

should we remove the theme and have a completely free round (with the special rules still in place)?

Things are looking pretty green here too so I'm happy with the change. I'm off to Cairns tomorrow so should be able to come up with something interesting.

OK, so with just 7 days to go until the entries are closed I reckon I'll put my toe in the water with

Untitled Panorama 01 (click for full sized image)

So my workflow was... (photoshop CS6 btw)

1 get up early to watch Korean GP Qualifying, go outside around dawn and take 4 shots in raw from the top of my garden
2 correct White balance in Camera Raw, add a bit of sharpening and clarity before combining said 4 images into a panoramic image
3 flatten image and crop
4 apply HDR toning - small width on edge glow, low strength edge glow, raise vibrance and lower saturation
5 play with curves - inverted s on red channel - raise blacks and lowered whites on green and small curve under the line for blues.

you can download a 30 day free trial (which, in my case, may have been extended through some nefarious means)

I decided to go for my second option

[image]Castle Rising[/image]

Slight cropping and straightening.

I altered the Raw by 4 stops either way then processed the three pictures in Photomatix to generate an HDR image.

Tone mapped the image.

Some slight alteration to contrast and a reduction in saturation in Photoshop Elements.

Fucks sake, i find a red bush and the theme's not autumn anymore.

Anyway, to stop me losing the chance to post this if we're going to start imposing the rule where the photo must be taken within a given date range, i give you NO FILTER REQUIRED

This is the afore mentioned bush. Taken on my iphone, but no filters/edits made.

Took this one this morning, my attempt at a long exposure of a river in daytime. I ended up using several filters stacked on top of each other which ended up making everything look pink, so I had to fix the colours and ended up with this (it was a RAW file by the way).

It still ended up looking overexposed, but I kinda liked it.

I shall call it, um... Hood's First Entry

It has a bit of a retro 70's vibe to it.

So, I went to RHS Wisley on Sunday which is a favourite place of mine to take macro pics due to the amazing flowers they have there. This particular weekend they had a statue theme so took loads of pictures.

It was only when I loaded the pics did I realise that for whatever reason, the ISO was set to 3200 and they were all really grainy (and some of them would have been great!) . Haven't got time to go out before the deadline so going with the following and hope it's not too bad.

Bottoms Up!

The only work done on this pic was the hike through the bush in 30 degree heat to get the shot while keeping an eye out for crocs and other nasties.
So no photoshop or manipulation at all just straight from the camera to you. I lie it's been resized.

The shot is of a male Double eyed Fig Parrot if anyone's interested, taken in mangrove / bushland along the Barron River mouth just north of Cairns, Queensland.
The stuff on his beak is from those nuts you can see on the tree that he was hoing into.

I know, I can't believe myself how much wildlife you can see with really not that much effort here.
I took over a thousand photos in 6 days in and around Cairns, most of them of reptiles and birds with a few platypus and bandicoots as well.

Sorry mate . If it's any consolation I'd love to be able to pop over to Paris or Amsterdam for the weekend or visit a 700 year old castle.
