I've allowed one performance per person, otherwise certain comedians would have 7/8 entries each, with films, t.v., radio and stand-up concerts/comedy albums all eligible.

200. Carl Reiner

as Alan Brady
in The Dick Van Dyke Show
1961 - 1966
T.V. Series

Carl Reiner was creator and writer of the Dick Van Dyke Show as well as a supporting player. in the original pilot, he actually played the lead role. The pilot was a failure and he stepped behind the scenes, revamping the show and returning occasionally in various supporting roles, including that of Alan Brady. The show itself revolved around Rob Petrie (Van Dyke), his home life with wife Laura (Mary Tyler Moore) and his work life as head writer for The Alan Brady Show, a television comedy show. The entire setting was inspired by Reiner's own time as a writer for Sid Caeser's Your Show of Shows, with the egomaniacal Brady based not so much on Caesar but on other big name television comedy stars of the period, like Jackie Gleason. Brady was mostly kept as an offscreen presence, but his few appearances were enough to secure Reiner's slot, especially season 5 opener, "Coast to Coast Big Mouth" where Laura accidentally gives away the secret of Brady's baldness on national television, his confrontation with Laura reveals one of the great comic monsters at both his funniest and most adorable.

I think he should. He used to be funny once upon a time. I'd nominate his perfomance in Roxanne as the one I think most worthy.

Martin will appear, Gimli is possibly the only person who'd think he shouldn't be on a comedy list.

But all of Martin's stand up, his SNL appearances, his reading of Pure Drivel and several films > Dirty Rotten

I'm also keeping my fingers crossed that some of the great silent comedians such as Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd won't be overlooked.

Now wait a minute I agree that the series dragged on but certainly the early Panther films were great entertainment and he was great in them.

I like Dirty..., but it's kind of medium Martin. Roxanne is amazing.

It's weird, because he was at rock-star levels of fame when he was a stand-up, but these days even a lot of people who grew up on Martin films aren't aware of the albums. It's incredible stuff though.

as Rich in Lucky Louie

T.V. Series

Norton's comedy career has seen him discuss his love for golden showers, the times he and his friend spent playing 'Monster Rain' when they were children, and getting into an argument with Jesse Ventura about immigration. The reason I picked his portrayal of Rich is that it's the kind of character that a lot of self-proclaimed edgy comedies attempt and fail. Lucky Louie was Louis C.K.'s attempt to bring back the live comedy aesthetic of The Honeymooners, where lines could be paced around the audience reaction and the sets looked artificial. Rich was one of Louis' closest friends, he was also an unpleasant little troll of a man. He constantly spouted nonsense, was a small time drug-dealer, thought it was funny to pretend to be gay, mocked his friend whenever he did anything for this wife and even pretended to be mentally disabled to get free pizza. But Norton made you care for the character despite all that, he presented it as very obvious front, so that when he got his bluff called by Louis' wife Kim, or when Louis daughter mocked him, you felt for his hurt. And as childish as the character was, he was really fucking funny.

198. Jeannie Berlin

as Lila Kolodny in The Heartbreak Kid
1972
Film

Jeannie Berlin probably isn't the most instantly recognisable name or face in the world, she only has a handful of film credits to her name with roughly a thirty year gap between some of the films. But she should have been Oscar nominated for Margaret last year, and she actually was nominated for this role. She really should have won. Berlin's Lila starts the film as a happy young bride, marrying Lenny (Charles Grodin) and heading for her honeymoon. But somewhere along the way, she becomes something that Lenny is unable to accept - a normal human being. When Lila comes down with a severe case of sunburn and is confined to their hotel room, he uses the free time to pursue another woman. Lila could easily have been a comic grotesque, but both Berlin and the film (directed by her mother) portray her as so fun and sweet, that even when she's stuck in a bed and smothered in suncream, she remains a lively and attractive person. It's a funny, soulful performance, and you have to wonder why she hasn't acted in films more often.

T.V. Series

Dino is one of the most influential and respected names in modern comedy, yet it's one that the public might not be familiar with. Some of the most acclaimed American comedy series of the last twenty years, from Conan to the Ben Stiller Show, Lucky Louie Letterman, Mr. Show and Community have all featured Dino on writing duty. But at least his role in Community has made him a familiar face. The sleazy, thieving, drug-dealing mature student became one of Community's most popular supporting characters, perfectly fitting in to Greendale's warped version of reality.

Yep, love Star-Burns and Dino (I also like how he begged to be killed off, complaining he was a writer not an actor

) he was brilliant during the last Series.

196. Adam Scott

as Henry Pollard in Party Down
2009 - 2010
T.V. Series

Failed actor Henry returns to work for a Hollywood catering firm. Disillusioned with the lifestyle and not really giving a shit about the job, Henry is more interested in hooking up with a co-worker and indulging his Vicodin addiction. Adam Scott could have made the list for this or Parks and Rec, playing a similar nice guy/straight man role in both, managing the difficult task of getting laughs while being the calm centre of the whirlwind supplied by the other characters. Party Down takes it because it does give him a few more instances to cut loose, with Henry on Ecstasy, taking a porn producer to task over the misleading blurb on the back of his dvds, being a particular highlight.
