May I ask why?

I'm not famous, so I don't see the attraction of having only 10 people read my tweets.

Its not really about famous people though. While I do follow some famous people, most of them are rubbish at it, and the most interesting accounts I follow are often not celebrities. Though I follow about 700 because I am absolutely useless at unfollowing even if someone is shit. As for only being followed by 10 people, your followers tend to snowball after a bit I find, and I'm well over 150 people reading my tweets. And not all of them are pornbots!

i made the mistake of following some Olympic athletes after getting caught up in the games, now their tweets have returned to the normal "its raining..." "OMG just had 3 weetabix"

I want to unfollow them but i dont want to make Rebecca Adlington cry

Why the hell is Joss Whedon the only celebrity on Twitter with a private account?

Doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of celebrities using Twitter? Promotion?

He was always getting hassled by trolls so he made his account private. Ricky Gervais and Damon Lindelof have both spoke bout doing the same. Gervais for all the Atheism stuff (he'll never do it, he loves the attention) and Lindelof after Lost finished.

And a lot of celebs use Twitter for the same reaon us normals use it for but, yes, some obviously do use it to flog their shit. Zac Levy from Chuck for example uses his account to say what he's doing (he's been over in the UK for the past couple of months) be he also has his Nerd Machine account where he advertises his charity stuff.

It's a shame that had to happen and spoil it for the rest of the fans. I imagine all celebs get their fair share of 'u suk lol' type comments.

Lost fanboys vs. Damon Lindelof would have been hilarious to watch though. They should publish a book of that transcript.

1) Gervais hasn't really made a career out of atheism, has he? I'm willing to accept that he's spent a fair bit of time on the subject, but lots of his comedy stuff isn't to do with atheism.

Absolutely. And to be fair on Twitter Ricky mainly targets the people who use religion as an excuse for intolerance and cruelty, as well as those who have some clearly insane views about creationsim, who are treated with the contempt they deserve.

2) It may seem hypocritical to you, but it isn't. It's just critical. Should religion be beyond criticism (what, even all those religions that don't quite gel with your own)? To be fair, Dawkins mainly talks about creationism, and why it's wrong and bizarre (as opposed to christianity). The reason why he goes on about it so much is because we're living in an enlightened age when we should know better than to instill our children with ridiculous fears about some invisible vengeful super-powered sky giant who can see you when you're nicking a biscuit or having a wank.

Nah, Dawkins has become fucking boring, goes on CONSTANTLY about religion while simplifying the narratives, repeating the same notes while accliaming fucking nonsense some of friends write or say (like Sam Harris' The Moral Landscape or defending that stupid James Watson's "aborting gay babies if we ever find a gay gene" comment). He's just endlessly repeating and being in the limelight and I'm starting to think that he is just doing it to stay in the limelight. He's an amazing scientist and I'll have all the time in the world seeing him defending the natural sciences agaisnt those who want to impose a supernatural belief as natural fact when all the evidence is agaisnt it, none of him actually discussing theology or history or philosophy or art or anthropology or anything outside his area, let alone it just keeps continuing these boring discussions between science vs. religion (which is though, mostly the fault of more conservative religious folk who just won't quit even after they've been constantly proven wrong and fallacious for their beliefs to be considered as fact the same way scientific evidence is seen as fact, even when people like religious folk Kenneth Miller and Archbishop Rowen Williams say NO). In other words, he isn't helping.

Yeah, Dawkins has been getting on my nerves lately, despite me agreeing with many things he says, although I haven't seen his new programme. But I heard a radio interview with him recently in which he also seemed to be blaming the writers of fantastical fiction for contributing to the "delusions of religion and the after-life", and that it was "cowardly". I just thought...what a miserable bastard. Now we can't even pretend that fantasy worlds exist for the purposes of entertainment? Fucking killjoy.

I'm not on Twitter, nor do I follow anyone, but doesn't former "nice average guy" Simon Pegg use his to say how great he is?

Whilst I do agree that some celebs take way too much crap on twitter, there are some that seem to snap back a bit too much, THIS article being a great example.

To be fair to... me... I've read The God Delusion and I'm midway through The Selfish Gene, and found/finding both of them enjoyable and informative reads.

I understand but, really? The God Delusion informative?

That's pretty much where I lost my patience with him and realized the man was simplfying a lot of things. The Selfish Gene is a book I'll have time for as it is a scientific book, but The God Delusion was diatribe and found nothing new or informative about it. I miss the days when the occasionally foolish but sometimes on the spot atheist intellectual to go was Berthrand Russell, not this twat.

Let alone the man has possibly spoke about religion than Bunuel did in his lifetime, but at least Bunuel had creative force behind him and unlike Dawkins, KNEW Christianity and all its more profound aspects and differences, and his hatred towards it came sometimes from his cynicism.

quote:

Both are written in a very accessible way and for the most part, make a heap lotta sense. And I saw that program The Dawk did about religion a few years ago where he was in Israel and Palestine (was it The Root of All Evil ?), plus I've caught wee bits here and there over the years of him being interviewed on other stuff (The Trouble with Atheism rings me a bell). But beyond that I really haven't seen an awful lot of him, especially recently, so all this talk of him constantly going on about religion, and doing so lately, has rather passed me by. Consequently, I haven't got the degree of Dawk-fatigue that others here seem to have.

It's probably better not, the man has gone from brilliant scientist to a guy stating "Islam is a cancer", "Christians are delusional, LOOK AT MY AMAZING SCIENCE YOU'RE INFERIOR OF YOU DON'T" or accliaming the shit his pals say, while thinking that religion is to blame on anything. I'm sorry, but I see nothing moral and ethical about science, human rights were not a scientific thing. Also, why focus on Israel and Palestine when countries where religious differences have led to massive problems exist, especially when mixed with politics. I mean India.

There's also criticizing Romney and destroying all his position (a man who as far as I know, while I wouldn't want him in a presidential chair and as far away from it as possible, was a decent governer) for being a Mormon, when some of his mates have held equally stupid positions (James Watson's racism) but somehow all their other opinions, works and achievements are still valid.

quote:

Fair enough then, if he's constantly stating and defending his position, I can accept that people (even those who largely agree with his stance) could become bored / irritated by him. But I wonder if it's because he's someone who's taken up a firm position on one side of an argument and subsequently attracts a lot of contention from people with the opposing view, and feels the need to counter their arguments. Don't you know, you shouldn't feed the trolls, Dakwypops...

I think he likes them, without them he wouldn't be in the spotlight even if he knows there is no convincing. It's like some of us here when a certain troll used to constantly pop up.

The only thing that annoys me about Dawkins et al (even though I might agree with their fundamental points) and their obsession with atheism vs religion is this assumption that it's an important ISSUE we should all care about. I don't believe in god hence I rarely think about 'him' and I'd imagine the same goes for most people who are more concerned with eating, paying bills, looking after their famillies and devoting their time and energy to fun stuff like films, music and football to worry themselves with pseudo-intellectual debates about prophets and wizards.
I guess what I'm saying is I couldn't really give two fucks.

I can definitely see why so many people would choose not to have a twitter account, and there are a few people who I wish had made the decision to not have one. Particularly for people in the public eye, having what is essentially a stream-of-consciousness tool at your fingertips can end very badly. There's really no way to judge tone and with only 140 characters the possibility of a major fuck up is very high. It's not just trolls that can derail discourse, you also have to worry about the kiss-arses. Then again, twitter screw ups are how I get most of my material for writing articles these days so keep at it, guys!

I'm mainly on twitter for misjudged political ranting, live-tweeting whatever I'm watching (which used to be mainly US cable news - yes, I know how sad that is), and talking with friends around the globe.
