There's a great film possible out of the Mallory story, and a Liman / Hardy combo could certainly do it justice. However, they MUST NOT use Archer's Paths Of Glory as the basis for their story! While sentimentalists still cling to the notion that Mallory made it to the summit of Everest and died on the way down, the most intensive research, and surviving circumstantial evidence, all point to a more prosaic outcome. Mallory and Irvine sadly didn't come close to reaching the summit, as indicated by research done by the likes of Tom Holzell and Jochem Hemmleb. But, as long as Irvine's body remains undiscovered, dreamers still cling to the hope that he still clutches a camera full of summit photos...

...a man not known for playing people who reach warm, sunny ends (or maybe I just haven't watched any of his cuddlier fare yet). My money's on Mallory never reaching that peak. Quite frankly, that will be a much better movie than yet another triumph-of-the-human-spirit-stirring-violins affair.
