Just a heads up for anyone who is planning on picking up Cabin in the Woods on Blu this week. People on avforums and bluray.com are reporting big problems with the disc, freezing and stuttering throughout. http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=198131&page=5

Time will tell if Lionsgate begin a disc replacement program, but this problem doesnt sound good and it might be worth holding off. I myself was going to pick up the steelbook tomorrow, but will hold fire until i hear more about this apparent problem being sorted. Just wanted to pre-warn anyone in case.

This is a bit worrying. I'm expecting my steelbook from HMV tomorrow (was posted Wednesday) I'll give it watch and hopefully it will be fine. I'm going to be a realist though. I expect it will be faulty.

I myself had the steelbook on pre-order, and as HMV still hadnt posted it by Thursday evening, i cancelled it, with the intention of just buying it instore tomorrow. Looks like i'll have to wait now, annoying as i havent seen the movie yet.

Just got home to find the disc waiting (not actually a steelbook - was sure I'd ordered that but double checked and turns out not) anyway haven't tried it yet but I just checked my email and HMV sent a message saying there's been a recall and they and will be sending a replacement out in a couple of weeks.

Sorted.

I believe its every single copy that has the problem, although i may be wrong. Glad to hear about Lionsgate offering a replacement program

Just to confirm I watched it last night (for the first time as well - very good film and a new approach!

) and it did it on mine so am assuming its affecting every disc.

It wasn't 'too' much of a problem but when it first did it I thought the disc was totally corrupted and would just stop! Its like when they put those brakes in films but in this case mid-scene - stops for about a second and then starts again.

Annoying but I can live with it - if they do offer a replacement though I'll be taking it!

My copy is flawed aswell.

MOVIE SPOILERS

I originally thought it was part of the movie to highlight the outside influences to the mine characters.

I thought they were in a computer generated simulated to begin with and these pauses were the computers updating the simulation. However the office scenes begun to pause aswell.

In my opinion it's bearable to begin with however it does spoil the flow of the final act. It did piss me off because I really enjoyed Cabin in the Woods.

As annoying as this whole farrago was, Lionsgate have absolutely been on the ball with this, so kudos to them.

Universal, next time you fuck up a Blu-ray release like you did with Twin Peaks, just take a leaf out Lionsgate's book and get on that shit pronto.

Yeah, we put ours out today. They only sent us replacement discs though rather than new copies, so it did mean we had to open all our steelbooks which is a little bit of a shame, but at least they'll work now.

I agree that's a bit of a shame, it's preferable to have a sealed steely on purchase, at least the discs are out now though.

But didnt you blind buy 'A Turtle's Tale'? Can anything really be more risky than that?

You should be pretty safe with Cabin In The Woods. It's a solid film. Not as ground breaking as some would have you believe, and in all honesty, in hidsight, the premise is and set up is a little thin. However, it is really well realised on screen and the final 20/30 minutes are really good. It certainly isn't a scary film, but it is fun. I actually think it's quite similar in tone to the original Scream, although I know a few people that disagree. I also suspect that it could look really good on Blu, which I know is a big plus for you, I'd imagine that final 20/30 minutes will look great. I certainly intend picking it up on Blu now the fucked up discs are done with.

I dont really have any facility to rent i'm afraid, i can't really be bothered to set one up just to rent this one movie either! (although it was a good suggestion!)

My GF said the CGI is terrible in this, she's usually overly critical of such things, so im taking that with a pinch of salt.

I'd say the majority of the CG effects work is pretty good, obviously for a relatively small budget flick it is never really going to reache Davy Jones-esque level of outstanding, but it never looks bad. There are a couple of moments that dont work as well as others, but on the whole, theyre pretty good. And there is a lot of good practical effect and make up work that looks great. It's hard to really point out specifics without giving too much away. I certainly dont think the CG work would stop anyone's enjoyment of it.

Does the Blu Ray have a decent set of extras? I cant be arsd to check...
