Speaking of Poltergeist - that visual effect of that spider like monster in front of JoBeth Williams is fucking brilliant considering the year in which it was made.

I saw a shit load of films unappropriate for my age when I was younger. Mainly because most of my friends were about 3-4 years older than me when I was a kid. So you had a load of 12-13 year olds catching their first glimpse of some porn and I would have probably been there as an 8 or 9 year old watching it with them. It's pretty grim when I think about it, that's only a year or 2 older than my daughter is now and I was seeing some pretty hardcore pornography. If I found out my daughter was exposed to the same sort of thing a year from now I'd be apoplectic.

Same with horror films. I would have seen the likes of Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Evil Dead, Friday the 13th, An American Werewolf in London, the Omen, shitty bootleg copies of the Exorcist and a lot more when I was 7 or 8 years old. That's pretty much why horror tends to have next to no effect on me as far as scares go, I was desensitised to that stuff a long long time ago.

The stuff I watched should have made me desensitised (Scanners on the big screen was great and much more realistic (or as realistic as an exploding head could be not having actually seen one go bang!

)) but don't tend to like watching horrors now. Don't want to watch stuff like Saw or Hostel. I think it's more about what you can't see that scares me now rather than films that try to outgore each other.

I don't recall seeing any bad films when I was really young, most of the decent horrors were around my teens

Thinking of the top of my head the bit where they open the ark would be by far the most "violent" part of it, is that the only bit that would put you off showing it to him?

I think I saw Raiders when I was about eight. As much as I found it thrilling and exhilerating I was also bloody terrified. My oldest is four and I was wondering if I could show him a little bit maybe...but no, never mind exploding heads and skeletons, there's also a great deal of fist-fighting that includes bone-crunching and immolation and blood spurting from noses and it's that kind of stuff that would really make me reluctant, and even when he reaches eight I would still be wary.

The gorenography genre is about as appealing to me as gonnorhea. I can still be disgusted by films, I just rarely get frightened by them.

As I said in the OP, I was pretty scared of Raiders of the Lost Ark, loved the whole film but couldn't bring myself to watch the end! I was about six or seven and my dad told me that if I watch it, I'll get over it and it all be ok, so I made myself watch it, and it was OK,.. still gross for a kids film though.. I think the next film to make me shit my pants was Jurassic Park, so many eyes closed moments, terrified raptors were gonna come into my room! Then I can't remember what my first proper scary film was... maybe Scream at a sleepover when I was 15..

Totally agree with the above comments - it's all about when they're ready to appreciate the film in question. Putting aside whether or not the child's going to get scared or not, if they're not old enough to understand and appreciate what they're watching, all you're going to do is ruin some great films for them.
I've got a load of films I want my daughter to watch (Raiders, Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Jaws etc.) but I want to make sure she's at an age to really appreciate them - as she's only 3 at the moment, that's quite a way off

Thing is, you can only watch a film for the first time once and it'll never have the same impact again and it'd be great if she was able to get that same feeling of excitement I remember from watching those films in the cinema.

Of course there's always the risk that, by the time I think she's capable of appreciating them, she'll just think anything Dad likes is "like, so, like, lame, y'know?"

As for the OP's query: - no, you really, really shouldn't let a 5 year old watch The Exorcist. That person on IGN sounds like a dick!

I'm not entirely sure that Spartacus... who says he was "watching the exorcist at 5" and "will let my kids watch horror films from a young age" is being entirely genuine. He sounds like a bit of a fantasist who's probably never met a woman, never mind had the opportunity to pro-create yet.

But yes letting a 5 year old watch the exorcist isn't good, but then I don't think that it ever happened with that joker either.

Yes, this is a very good point as I've discovered this myself with various horror movies. I just think that as we get older many of these films affect us thematically, whereas as kids we weren't mature enough or sophisticated to be engaged on a cerebral level, especially with films like Exorcist and Omen with layers of subtext. Maybe many of us feel more vulnerable the older we get, more exposed to death and the unknown. And certainly, for me, becoming a parent has had an enourmous effect on my sensibilities and tolerance for the nasty stuff.

I lived in a house with Three Brothers and One Sister, the youngest of them was 13 years older than me. We also lived in a house with two main rooms downstairs a backroom where my mum and dad used to sit and a front room where the rest of us would spend our time. You can see where I'm going with this. I saw some pretty inappropriate stuff from a very young age. However I was also a bit of a wuss. The first "horror" film I watched all the way through was the original Fright Night when it first came out on video. That would have made me about six. I can aslo remember my brother locking me in the room and making me watch the Evil Dead it must have been an uncut version as I can remember the "Tree Rape" scene pretty vividly.

Now although I'm pretty sure I turned out fine none of this was a good thing. I have two kids and I'll probably start letting the eldest watch some scary films when he's about eight or nine. I'll start with things like Gremlins and The Lost Boys though.

I heard someone at work saying she let her five year old watch Kick Ass. I know it's cartoonish but that's ridiculous to me.

Totally agree with this - case in point Pet Semetary (film & book) Saw this when it first came out on video and no problem - scariest thing for me back then were the flashbacks to the sister.
Watched it again recently, post-fatherhood, and boy did it have a different effect! Probably not helped by the fact my daughter was about same age as the little kid - could barely watch some parts

Just going back to Ghostbusters 2 for a sec, interestingly when it was most recently on TV (afternoon/early evening on channel 5 a few weeks ago?), the heads on spikes scene was back in, having previously been excised. Not sure if it was a cock-up and they showed the post-weatershed version by accident (I didn't watch the whole thing), or if it's been re-edited taking into account changing times and opinions.

Anyway, I come to the discussion sat on the fence. My dad was a huge film fan (it's thanks to him I've become the film bore I am now) and, whilst he was cautious with what to allow me to watch whilst I was a child, when I hit my teenage years he relaxed quite a lot and I waded through all sorts of 18 rated fare and stuff that I shouldn't have really been watching. By that time though, and because films featured heavily in my life from a VERY young age, I knew that films were films and were not to be confused with real life. In that respect, I think my dad was cool and responsible rather than negligent.

Having said all that, I now have a daughter who is two and a half and, at the moment, I'm not quite sure how she'll be brought up with films. As DancingClown said, my sensibilities may well change when it comes to the point she wants to see something that, on paper, is too old for her. It depends on what the film is, I guess. I certainly wouldn't allow her to see The Exorcist until she's a teenager (although, judging by most modern audience reactions when I've seen it at cinemas since the BBFC lifted the ban, younger viewers - and I am talking mid to late teenagers now - tend to find it boring, unintentionally funny, or a combo of the two, with only the spinal tap scene appearing to trouble them - weird).

But then, in the States, anyone 12 years or older can see an R rated film as long as they are with an adult, and Rs can still come out as 18s over here, so who's to say what's right and what's wrong.

The heads on spikes scene has been in and out over the years. The real test as to whether they showed the uncut version or not is if Dana says 'Oh, you bastard' towards the end. If that's there, it's uncut, I find.

I think that raises an interesting question about parental abuse - nothing physical, just making your children sit through Dawn of the Dead, Irreversible and a Lucio Fulci marathon. Maybe with that eye-epener thing from A Clockwork Orange.

Anyway... the first film which scared the crap out of me was Silence of the Lambs. I must have been 11 or 12 when I saw it, but I had nightmares. Really disturbing ones. But the film which freaked me out the most when I was little was Se7en. It still does.
I find people WAY more frightening than monsters.

And you found Anthony Hopkins' panto dame scary?!?!?!?

Wow.

Generally I agree with you about people being scarier than monsters (because I've always been a very logical thinker and, even as a toddler, apparently never had a problem with the dark or monsters in the cupboard or anything), but even I thought Hopkins was terrible in it and in no way scary when I first saw it at about the same age (might've been 12 or 13).
