GTA V is just around the corner. Big whoop! Sure the trailer and early screen-shots look flash, but it also remains abundantly sterile and soulless, a quagmire the franchise has found itself shoulder deep in since GTA 3. Cutting out all of the stupid fun and silliness of the original (including the mowing down of a line of Hare-Krishna for simple chuckles) the now serious high-minded nature of professional criminality and all of the mucky business that goes with it is just tedious bobbins. A bit like the endless fecking cut-scenes! Whereís fast, frantic and notoriously daft fun when you need it?

Well, luckily for us some Canadian dude called Brian Provinciano has been crafting an open-world action parody in the form of an 8-bit styled gaming extravaganza. Retro City Rampage, on the face of it, appears to be the GTA V we really want; pure hokum where blowing the shit out of anything is everything. APB, Paperboy and Cannon Fodder all seem to be thrown into the mix for good measure, providing a return to what made Grand Theft Auto really marvellous in the first place. Fast, smooth scrolling graphics, making for a break-neck pace as civilians are blown to smithereens, cars are jacked, high-scores are totted up and achievements earned Ė a nice modern touch to complement the retro gaudiness of the visuals.

Sure it looks somewhat garish, but this really could be the essence of the Commodore 64 showcased on modern systems, not just simple emulation. And obviously itís retro enough to make me feel ever so slightly giddy. Brian has even slaved over the game for the last seven years to get it right, mimicking the individual programmers that frequented yesteryear before big gaming studios were the done thing. If Retro City Rampage does the business we could, therefore, be mentioning Brian in the same breath as Tony Crowther, Jeff Minter, Manfred Trenz, Sensible Software, Archer McLean and Geoff Crammond. Groovy company indeed!

Anyway, a release date isnít far off and at just under ten quid on the PC it at least reflects former prices for 8-bit gaming. You could even pre-order from the games website now! Anyone else creaming in their jeans with anticipation?

How much do you get per sale?

Yeah I'd play that. Looks like good fast paced fun, can't bate a bit of cannon fodder. I do like me some GTA though.

Advertising spam? Why not read the post again, specifically the bits featuring opinion on how I hope the game pans out. Rather than being a cynical goof...

Looks decent, I might check that out.

Disagree with your criticism of GTA IV though. It's the best of the lot for me, by some distance. And that's despite the annoying phone calls (which you can ignore anyway) from Roman. Give me missions like Four Leaf Clover over killing groups of Hare Krishna any day of the week .

Anyone picked this up yet? I had a bash for an hour last night. It's ridiculously absurd and bonkers but such a laugh riot of fun. Went to bed smiling with glee. A great paraody of everything that's wrong with sandbox games instilled within a framework of 8-bit genius.

I... I don't even remember what I was trying to get at here. Best to forget it perhaps.

Eurogamer's review appeared today, looks fun enough to be worth checking out, particularly with this kind of silly 80s in-joke stuff include.

It is silly fun, but despite the parody, it's stuck in sandbox hell and features too much modern convention to make it a true 8-bit experience. i.e. it's far too easy, not particularly challenging, and the mission variety conforms to the now typical collect and deliver scenario. So while I'm having fun blowing the crap out of stuff at the moment, I can't see it lasting. A bit like every GTA since the first two. RCR really needed a 'three lives and out' system in place. That would have had me coming back over and over trying to get that little further into the game on each turn.
