How about the up and coming duo of Refn and Gosling? I think Gosling could pull it off, he's certainly proved himself to have acting chops (not that you'll need great acting chops to play Snake). As far as Refn goes: he does not shy away from violence, he has a distinct visual-style and atmospheric visuals. I always thought a quality MGS film would have to be like Jean-Pierre Melville film; a kind of slow moving film with bursts of violence, while remaining interesting via visual-style. Also, my 2 cents: I always thought of MGS as having a super-natural edge to it, you know, strange bosses and all that jazz.
