completely non film related, but hoping someone can help me out.

I need to make a poster as part of my research project and my images need to be 8bit for them to print. Ive tried saving as 256 colour bitmap as suggested elsewhere, but i lose so much quality the pictures become redundant. Does anyone know of other tools I can use?

I have free software, trying image J now, but before i tried using irfan view. When using irfan view i select the output to be 8bit, but when i do the whole "right click-properties" shabang, the file still says 24 bit..... so im well stuck atm.

any help much appreciated.

you could download photoshop cs6 as a trial for 30 days; that should be capable of doing it

Yeh i tried searching for that but couldnt get a link to it. Never mind though, i tried a website suggested earlier. It hasnt worked all day but for some reason it decided to work just now, so problem solved really. Thanks anyway :)
