20. Once Upon a Time in China

Jet Li becomes a star with this action packed tale of a martial arts master battling a criminal gang as the western world attempts to take over. The fight sequences are pretty spectacular and its amazing watching Li, the comedy is a little less successful but it's not plagued with slapstick which is often a problem with these types of film.

19. The Commitments

Alan Parker's thoroughly enjoyable musical comedy-drama which follows the rise and fall of a soul band in Dublin. The music is fantastic (MUSTAAANG SALLY NOW BABY!!!) and the performances are charmingly likeable. The most fun movie in Parker's body of work and always worth catching now and again.

18. Naked Lunch

A totally bonkers blending of mind's as David Cronenberg adapts William S Burroughs novel and mixes in elements of the writer's own life. It's completely off the wall as there's talking bugs, typewriters and weird sex. Totally hallucinatory and total genius. If probably not a film you would be in a hurry to watch again. It's like David Lynch does Casablanca. Peter Weller and Judy Davis are excellent and totally get the vibe of the film.

Ren & Stimpy is superb (up until the adult episodes anyway), OUATIC is amazing, as is Naked Lunch. The Commitments is Alan Parker.

Well I don't hate Parker nealy as much as rawls

The Commitments is enjoyable enough but is still some way behind the likes of MB, Angel Heart, Shoot the Moon and Bugsy Malore.

Naked Lunch is excellent.

17. My Own Private Idaho

The quintessential work of both director Gus Van Sant and late star River Phoenix. The film follows the lives of gay hustlers and the plot is a twist on Shakespeare's Henry IV and V plays. Whilst the Shakespeare angle doesn't altogether work, the gorgeous visuals that Van Sant produces alongside Phoenix' beautiful performance make this a must see. A sad look into the life of an introverted drifter.

16. The Fisher King

Perhaps Terry Gilliam's most under-appreciated movie, it's a modern fable as radio DJ Jeff Bridges meets homeless chap Robin Williams and the two make an unusual bond as they search for the holy grail. Its a sweet and likeable film with the two stars doing excellent work and there's some good support to from Oscar winner Mercedes Reuhl. Although Michael Jeter threatens to steal the film in his small role as a transvestite.

15. Thelma & Louise

A fresh, vibrant spin on the road movie as our two female protagonists find themselves on the run. One of Ridley Scott's most unashamedly crowd pleasing movies with two great performances from the stars and a nice feminist based screenplay. The ending has gone down in history and has been parodied endless times. Meanwhile you may have to open a window when Brad Pitt appears on screen.

14. Europa

Lars Von Trier's min-boggling experimental film has uses a genius mix of cinematic tricks such as colours, narrative and projections to tell the story of a young man becoming a sleeping car conductor in post-WWII Germany. The story gets confusing but contains a nice mix of melodrama and film noir but the whole thing is just an excuse for the director to have some technically marvellous fun. A memorably nuts movie.

Fisher King is wonderful one of Gilliams best films.

Only seen bits of MPI but get the impression its one of GVS's better films.

Thelma & Louise is a great american epic with great leads and a charming script.

13. Beauty and the Beast

One of the best films in Disney's body of work. This was a welcome return to solid storytelling from the company with two likeable three dimensional lead characters, excellent animation design and songs that stayed on the right side of schmaltzy. Angela Lansbury is a welcome addition as the loveable tea-pot Mrs. Potts. A lovely film that is enjoyed by all the family and famously the only animated film of the last century to be nominated for an Oscar.

12. Terminator 2: Judgment Day

James Cameron and his stars reunited for this action packed, impressive sequel to the cult classic. Rather than reprizing the original the film expands on the earlier themes of the previous films and completely shakes things up for the stars, who play very different roles in this time round. Schwarzenegger is in his element and Hamilton is perfect. This is a rare intelligent massive Hollywood movie and one that is always worth watching again.

11. Delicatessen

Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet's debut is a deliciously oddball comedy following the tenants of a future dystopian apartment block who harbour a dark secret. It's increasingly inventive and is a homage to much of Terry Gilliam's work. There's also a loveable kooky romance at the heart of the film that stops the film from becoming too bleak.

10. The Simpsons - Bart the Murderer (#3.4)

Bart: Aah! You ate my homework?... I didn't know dogs really did that.

There's plenty of gangster movie references in this excellent episode which follows Bart's adventure into becoming a gangster and the subsequent trial for Principal Skinner's death. Joe Mantegna is perfect as Fat Tony and has been a welcome recurring character over the years. Skinner gets one of his finest moments here as he turns up to stop the trial and explain his whereabouts.

9. The Simpsons - One Fish, Two Fish, Blowfish, Blue Fish (#2.11)

Marge Simpson: Soon the rain will fall. My dear one is departing. But first, please heed this call. That always will I love you, My one, my love, my all.

Once again getting the humour and melancholy sadness in a perfectly balanced episode as Homer succumbs to a bad blowfish poisoning and is left with one day left to live. There's pointed humour and satire at Japanese stereotypes early on and the second half of the episode is very sad as Homer goes about doing all the things he wants to do before he dies. The show at its very best.

I don't dislike them really. Up until a year ago I'd only ever seen about 30 seconds of the show. I then saw S1. It finished 94th in my list of TV season I saw last year and wrote the following - "I struggled with this. It took me about 3 months to watch just 13 episodes, I just couldn't get excited about seeing the next one. The camping/bigfoot episode was a highlight, but it was only with the final three episodes that I actually found myself properly enjoying the show and they redeemed the season greatly, else it'd be about 45 places lower than this. Krusty Gets Busted was hilarious. Homer and Bart are both annoying oiks though." -

Since then I've been working my way through 2. Almost a year later I still haven't finished but it has improved, and the Raven section for Treehouse of Horror is by far the best bit I've seen.

And that's fair enough, the first season, is nowhere near as good in quality as seasons 2-10 which are close to perfect. If you openly disliked them, I'd probably spam post crying gifs until a mod came and stopped me

And I'm with you on Krusty Gets Busted, that's top tier Season 1. As for the seasons beyond Season 10? I wouldn't argue with you if you hated them, in fact I'd support you

Beauty and the Beast is amazing.

T2 is less so, I prefer the first.

Those are two great eps of The Simpsons too, One Fish Two Fish... is the best of that season, I think.

8. The Simpsons - Flaming Moe's (#3.10)

Moe: People today are healthier and drinking less. You know, if it wasn't for the junior high school next door, no one would even use the cigarette machine.

Possibly Moe's finest moment on the show as he becomes a bit of a celebrity after stealing a mix from Homer to create a popular drink. One of the great things about the show is that their is such a wide range of characters that can all run with a great episode. Moe shows that his greed is always his ultimate downfall and is a likeable loser. Love the Cheers homage.

7. The Simpsons - Stark Raving Dad (#3.1)

Homer Simpson: I can't wear pink! Everyone at work wears white! I'm not popular enough to be different.

One of the cleverest guest star turns came when Michael Jackson voiced a seemingly disturbed young man who thought he was the King of Pop, despite looking nothing like him. Jackson is hardly an actor but he pokes fun at his own body of work here and he gives a very effective vocal performance. It's a great episode and the song that Jackson and Bart come up with for Lisa on her birthday is an emotional highlight. It's a shame we never got to see this character again as he remains one of my favourite one-offs.

6. The Double Life of Veronique

A haunting, ethereal drama that hints at the supernatural. The film follows two women, one Polish and one French, both impeccably played by the lovely Irene Jacob and how they have a sense of connection to the other. It's not a film that provides any answers but merely one that allows the emotional impact of its story to take the forefront. With beautiful cinematiography and score, it's an art-house gem.

5. JFK

Never one to shy away from controversy, Oliver Stone gives an outstanding mostly fabricated vision of events surrounding the assassination of president JFK. It's a tightly structured conspiracy thriller that should be enjoyed for its cinematic values rather than any truhs brought to the story. Stone's directing is fantastic as is the cinematography and exceptional performances from the ever sprawling cast. The whole end court scene is pretty amazing.
