The first being in the four and a half billion year history of this planet to walk on the surface of an extraterrestrial place. Legend is the only word suitable. RIP to one of humanities greatest pioneers.

A sad day, one of the most famous humans to have ever lived is gone from us, RIP Neil Armstrong, you were a true pioneer sir.

Have been listening to this coincidentally all day since I caught the last hour of a film about Henry Purcell last night, and its extremely apt on this occasion imo :

I can't even begin to grasp the enormity of what he did, and how he felt about it - the first man to WALK ON THE MOON.

If I'm ever with a group of people and the conversation gets round to ultimate ambitions and dreams, I always get a few laughs when I say it's to visit the moon.

But fuck 'em, I don't care. It's such a monumental achievement and Armstrong epitomised the dreams and heart of adventure in so many.

RIP.

The figurehead of a remarkable collaborative effort and a model of dignity and bravery. I doubt any of us can truly comprehend his achievement. He was my boyhood hero and this is a very sad day.

Incidentally, Mitt Romney waded in with an embarrassingly gibberish tribute, "The Moon will miss its first son of the Earth".
This is one small sentence for a man. One giant facepalm for mankind.

Not much more that I can that hasn't been said already - what an legend. First man on the moon, one of the most famous men in the world and from what I gather, an incredibly modest and humble one too. Rest in peace Neil Armstrong.

His family made a nice statement:

When you next look up and see the moon smiling down at you - give it a wink and think Of Neil.

I know, I still find that incredible, I have a signed copy of a David Scott book and treasure that immensely.

I did this small 'artistic' tribute for Neil Armstrong half an hour ago.

R.I.P Mr. Armstrong.

EDIT: oops, got the date wrong

I think Shaun Ryder put it best:

Neil Armstrong, astronaut
Had balls bigger than King Kong
First big suit on the moon
And he's off to play golf
Hole in one!
