Would have broken $40 million had most of America not been glued to their TVs on Friday.

You guys speak of Oblivion, which was mighty fine, but I want The Place Beyond the Pines to do amazingly which is what it is doing right now.

BOmojo predictions:
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=3674&p=.htm

Looks like IM3 is on course to do a Skyfall (should’ve seen that coming really) :
quote:

Iron Man 3's $195.3 million overseas debut ranks ninth all-time, and second among Marvel movies behind Spider-Man 3 ($230.5 million). Its top territory was the U.K. with $21.5 million, followed by South Korea ($19.2 million), Australia ($18.4 million), Mexico ($16.1 million), France ($14.7 million), Brazil ($12.3 million) and Italy ($11.2 million). According to Disney, it also had the biggest opening weekend ever in the Asia Pacific and Latin America regions.

The movie still has openings in China, Russia and Germany to look forward to in the next week or two. While matching The Avengers's $888 million is probably out of reach, it is now guaranteed to wind up with at least $600 million by the end of its run. Add in what should be a very strong domestic performance as well, and Iron Man 3 will likely be the first 2013 movie to reach $1 billion worldwide.

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=3676&p=.htm

i wonder if MOS will do a Dark Knight on IM3?....

Oblivion crossed $200m WW. That's the 20th film of Cruise's career (non-adjusted) to do so.

So Iron Man 3 opening weekend predictions?

I'm going for $175 million - it's pretty much guaranteed to hit a billion overall and I still don't see much beating it this year.

Oblivion has little chance of hitting $100 million domestic but it will be interesting to see how After Earth fares by comparison

I reckon World War Z wil flop ( A PG-13 zombie apocalypse movie? Get the fuck outta here! )

Also R.I.P.D looks AWFUL.Definetly a turkey.

True but all tracking seems to indicate that it's going to perform more like a sequel to the Avengers than to Iron Man. If the Dark Knight Rises can do $160 million with no 3D then I think Iron Man 3 will beat that.

Nah, I don't think that will happen with WWZ. It's been getting too much attention.

You might well be right about R.I.P.D. though.

I will bet you £100 that World War Z does not make £1bn.

OR 5 Blu Rays of your choice.

I won't wager anything but I really don't think it will make that much. It may do ok but it won't be a hit. I am happy to be proven wrong, though.

Oh shit, this is a bet that's actually plausible, THAT MEANS WE'RE HOLDING YOU TO IT!

Also, no mention of singular Blu-rays or boxsets, so I recommend THIS, THIS, THIS, THIS, and THIS!

The only movie with zombies in it to make 9 figures, was Hotel Transylvania with under $150 million.

World War Z has had its release date pushed back agaan and again.

There have been drastic reshoots to entirely change the third act due to terrible test screening results.

Its a zombie apocalypse movie..with a family friendly rating?

Brad Pitt hasnt been in a hit movie for ages.

Yeah sounds like a billion dollar blockbuster alright!

People thought Titanic was gonna bomb big-time, remember. Frankly, I don't think it'll make a billion either, but all you've said doesn't mean shit at this point, because not only do none of us know for sure yet (obviously), but there have been surprise mega-hits in the past with productions a lot more troubled than what we've heard about WWZ.

Iron man 3 has the second best opening ever, no big surprise there. I wonder if Captain America will also benefit greatly from the Avengers-effect..

Haha. Well I had to get one right eventually. I predicted that Total Recall would be a huge hit last year!

It's a huge opening for Iron Man and it will be really interesting to see how it fares next week. It received a Cinemascore rating of A which means it should get strong word of mouth but I get the impression that some of the hardcore fans were left a bit unimpressed which may affect the amount of rewatches it gets. Still it's hard to imagine the drop off being worse than The Dark Knight Rises' 61% decline - I think that was the weekend of the Olympics though.

As for World War Z...I think it will do OK. Not a total flop but not a huge success either. The Lone Ranger however, I think is going to absolutely tank!

How were people predicting The Curse of the Black Pearl to do before it was released? Could it be a a success like that or it's pretty certain that it will probably John Carter?

Yeah that's the most obvious comparison and I was incredibly skeptical about the prospects of the first POC movie. That said the trailer (POC) looked great and Johnny Depp's performance looked like something really innovative so there were positive signs. However, with the Lone Ranger it just seems that Depp is trying to recreate Jack Sparrow and there's nothing that really grabs me and compels me to watch it at the cinema. However, that's just my opinion and I have no idea how it's tracking or what the general buzz is about the film but for me it holds pretty much zero interest.

Audiences' craving for the same f-ing thing over and over again has never been so high. It's mildly depressing.

It's hardly much better - another superhero movie, another reboot, another remake of two films we've already seen.

Good opening for Gatsby and apparently it's DiCaprio's 2nd best opening after Inception.

I'm thinking Iron Man 3 will wind up with around $450 million domestic and about $1.4 billion international.

Man of Steel looks really good in my opinion but I'd be surprised if it opened to more than $100 million.
