Despicable Me 2 $84m ($142m 5-day)

The Lone Ranger $29m ($48m 5-day)

Thanks for killing off the western again Gore.

I'll say Despicable Me 2 will easily win the summer. Audience reaction is very positive and it won't have a problem blowing past $300m.

And depending on how it holds from here on out I'd say Monsters University has a good chance at being #2.

I actually think it looks pretty good too. Any film opening against Despicable Me 2 was going to suffer though, and I also think it had some of the worst marketing this year. Just terrible. Like John Carter, I suspect I'll probably really enjoy it, and the marketing is simply doing a shitty job of selling a half decent adventure. I think a release date later in the year would've been far, far better for Lone Ranger, it was never going to hold it's own in such a crowded Summer.

I quite like the look of Lone Ranger too, but I've been confused by the marketing; which one is the sidekick?

I think the Lone Ranger looks shit to be honest. I'll still watch it though and I hope it's not the dud a lot of people are saying it is. I'm just fed up with these huge, in your face, 'BANG BOOM EXPLODE LOUD NOISES!' films which is all we seem to be getting these days. Also- racism.

How so? Depp as Tonto?

I thought I heard this being rolled out when the casting was announced, but I am not sure I see it. Is it the fact that Depp is playing what I assume is a Native American Indian fella?

Not so much being cast as a Native American (Depp claims some of his ancestors were Native American and even made a film about the struggles of Native Americans) alone but that Tonto while not intentionally racist in the time he was created, is something of a walking stereotype that would be seen unforgivable by Ford in his later films and is played by a man who can be referred as being white.

Also, I will never get why they gave him a name that means stupid or foolish in Italian and Spanish.

To be honest, the fact that LONE RANGER is from the Pirates OTC director makes it a foregone flop, in my opinion...

The first one was OK, but all the sequels were so fucking crap...

I think Despicable Me 2 has a very good chance at $1b or very close, which might be ironic considering no one even mentioned it on the opening pages of this thread, never mind entertain the thought of it being the biggest film of the summer. MoS? STID? LOLs. .

It's going to do $350+ in the US and it has a very good shot at $600m OS.

Perhaps - would still appreciate it if DC could give us his predictions for the second half of the year.

Looking at those latest box office figures, i think its safe to call Ryan Reynolds this years '' Taylor Kitsch '' !

No, Reynolds has a career outside this, Anrie Hammer or whatever his name is is this year's Taylor Kitsch.

Hammer doesnt have two major flops in a row though which is why i think Reynolds deserves the Kitsch label.

He has The Croods and is a known personality. Hammer? What Hammer? That not counting last year's venture was Mirror Mirror.

What bearing does two flops have on Reynold's abilities as an actor?

Answer: zero. He's also rich, likable, good looking, had sex with Scarlett Johannson (sp?) and is married to Blake Lively. Despite having a bad run this year career choice wise, I say the man has won at life.
