Still amazes me that Star Trek is now firmly associated with the summer blockbuster crowd and 450m is an underwhelming take. Who'd have thought it !

This thread is really terrible. I mean, it's basically a bunch of people focussing on the one thing that doesn't affect them instead of discussing the most important things: the flaws and strengths of the films. I mean, who actually gives two flying fucks about how much money Star Trek: Kirk into Spock's Mouth didn't make? Doesn't matter.

And yes, I do realise the inherent irony of my post and how much of a hypocritical cunt I am.

ok anyway...if anyones interested heres the previous Superman adjusted (and estimated in some cases) BO to compare to how MOS is doing

figures are from BOmojo

STM (1978)
budget = 55m (200m in 2013)

Domestic:
$134,218,018
Foreign:
$166,000,000
= Worldwide:
$300,218,018

$300m ww = $1.1b ww in 2013 $ (so really STM was like The Dark Knight of its day box office wise)

SII (1980)
budget = 55m (155m in 2013)

Domestic: $108,185,706
Forgien = ?

domestic is about $300m when adjusted...overseas was probably abit less than STM so maybe 140m, so about $250m overall ww in 1980 - so overall adjusted SII is about $700m ww...maybe the domestic drop was partly due to II being released in the US the weekend after Raiders in summer 81?

SIII (1983)
budget = ? (gotta be less than I & II - est 40m - about 100m today)

Domestic: $60m
Forgien = ?

$60m in 1983 is about $140m when adjusted - so not too bad....and judging by the domestic decline, overseas will have also fallen quite abit - so maybe about $80m for overseas - so $140m total in 83 would be roughly around $325m-350m ww when adjusted - a big drop from I and II, but far from the flop everyone makes out..

SIV (1987)
budget $17 m ($35m when adjusted - budget was originally 36m but was halfed at shortly b4 prod. 36m = 75m in 2013 which is still not too big for a Superman film)

Domestic: $15,681,020
Forgien = ?

domestic be about 30m now, and overseas was prob about the same as US so 30m ww in total in 87 - would that be about $60m ww today

SR (2006)
budget $270m (but about 70m of that was previous attempts - Burton, Cage, Ratner, Abrams etc - 270m = 310m today. 200m = 230m today)

Domestic: $200,081,192
+ Foreign: $191,000,000
= Worldwide: $391,081,192

391 in 2006 = about $450m ww in 2013 (if SR had made 450m there probably wouldve been a sequel)

Looks like White House Down is going to lose the battle of the Die Hard in the white house movies.

Having it come out so soon after Olympus Has Fallen, people probably mistook it for the same film.

Great to see Man Of Steel doing so well.If they get the sequel out in the next three years ( the reports about WB wanting it out next year are nonsense, a film like that needs at least three years before it can be finished ) i predict a TDK style gross of a billion dollars easily.

Looks as though The Lone Ranger may be the bomb of the Summer, even some of the positive reviews are limp- http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_lone_ranger/#contentReviews

And people are saying the film is, shock horror, a little racist! Never saw that coming

Oh and before people say 'why is he called The Lone Ranger?' it is because he is the only Texas Ranger left. Tonto is not a Texas Ranger, hence The Lone Ranger.....

Despicable Me 2 will destroy it at the box office and will take away the family audience that was a key part of Depp's success over the past decade, leaving The Lone Ranger with a very small audience of what - 60 year old men trying to reclaim their youth?

The thing is, too, it could work. It is a simple revenge story but as usual, they need to make it 'BOOM, BLAM LOUD NOISES!

I think it would be a tough sell at any time of the year, but releasing it against a sequel to a very popular family film is suicide. And spending $250m on a LONE RANGER(!) remake is just asking for you to be kicked in the balls.

Also who the heck is Armie Hammer and why is he getting equal billing with Johnny Depp? Having Depp's name in such small font size isn't going to improve things.

I think we're going to have a couple of high profile bombs in the upcoming weeks. After Earth and White House Down have already tanked and The Lone Ranger and Pacific Rim will probably follow them.

The thing is, like all films, The Lone Ranger will have its fans. And most of them post on Empire

I think Pacific Rim will do better than Lone Ranger.

The Lone Ranger is another one of those films where the trailers have been pretty dire. It seems to happen a lot this year as After Earth was pretty much the same and I can foresee a similar performance at the box office.

Id say Pacific Rim will be a surprise hit.

It may lack big stars but its MONSTERS VS DUDES IN MECH SUITS!

And Guillermo Del Toro is a pretty darned good filmaker so it should be better than the Transformers films at the very least ( not hard i know ).

I've no idea how tracking works or how it translates to actual box office, but apparently Pacific Rim has been tracking terribly, suggesting it may be on it's way to underperforming. I don't think it's going to bomb or fail, but I don't think it will be the mega hit some online sites have been trying to suggest it will be. All clips I've seen so far look pretty underwhelming, which is a shame as more recent trailers had started to get me interested. The clips though look to have some really strange line delivery, anyone seen the clip with Ron Perlman and the wierd little guy? Seriously odd line readings there. I think it may do 400/450m worldwide.

In much the same way that a nuclear strike cannot be considered covert warfare, a $280m film cannot be considered a "surprise hit".

It can if people are expecting it to bomb.

The marketing for lone ranger has been extremely poor, just like a certain other mega budget Disney movie from last year. Shame as i think it looks great and can't wait to see it. Pacific rim will really have its work cut out.

Yeah, it is a big budget soul-less dud/perfect DK fodder

And you were correct, Directorscut, Despicable Me 2 killed it.
