You cant make a PG rated remake of an 18 rated movie.

In fairness, the original is only rated a 15 now - times have changed as well and what used to be an 18 no longer is. This is still rated lower of course - but you do need to factor in the 'when' as well when thinking about it generally.

Well yes, because I checked. There was a cut of 113 mins passed in June this year at 15. A longer cut than any of the older ones too.

Interestingly, the last time it was submitted was 2007 and while it was an 18 I think it was exactly the same cut as 2001 so I don't think they bothered paying for a re-rating. So it might have changed a lot earlier than this year if they had.

Wow! Two stars? As many as that? I'm really looking forward to the pointless/gutless/nutless remakes of Robocop and Starship Troopers now. Your move, creeps!

I'm fairly optimistic over the Robocop title.I feel that little viral video a couple of months back had captured that tv-commercial essence which Robocop had in abundance quite well.

Onto this remake, well I was always skeptical due to the fact I don't rate either Collin Farrel or Kate Beckinsale, and Miss Biel hasn't left her acting credentials on me either.Plus the fact Len Wiseman filmography is abit up-and-down,but then again every Director usually has atleast one good film on there CV.

So overal you could say I was apprehensive about this remake.

Just before the 1990 version was re-rated, the BBFC had a great article on their website about how the original 18 classification was reached, including the ratings documents used. All 3 of the BBFC reps who viewed the film felt the tone at the time was more '15', but because of the violence (and a willingness not to make Verhoeven cut the film, because they all loved it!), they recommended the 18 certificate. But only just.

You can see where that particular concern would change over time to make it easier to go 15 now. And it probably would have been that way for more than a decade. Perhaps the filmmakers thought it looked better keeping it at an 18 even though, compared to modern ratings, it wasn't anymore.

Seeing this tomorrow in Imax, looking forward to it too. The visuals and action sequences look pretty great in the trailers.
I liked the Arnie original when I was 10, but having re-watched it last year I think its aged terribly. And as I'm no super hardcore fan of Verhoeven's, I wont be continuously comparing this one to that one, so hopefully it'll be a decent enough blockbuster in its own right.

I actually thought this was ok. I mean, if it is a choice between this and the 1991 film, go for the latter. But I still found it pretty fun.

I'm intrigued to know the nuances and distinction between Colin Farrell and Arnie's take on the character.

One has an Austrian accent. The other has a kinda Irish one.

Yeah, it was re-released in cinemas earlier this year and re-rated to 15. This is also probably why this version is almost the same length as the original cimema version. I think the fact it is digital now rather than film accounts for the slightly longer running time- http://www.bbfc.co.uk/BFF062682/

Digital projectors run at 24 frames per second, the same running time as 35mm. #ProjectionGeek

So, that wouldn't account for the extra 40 seconds or so then? The film wasn't edited originally so the only other reason I can think of is a new distributor logo at the start which would be different from the original release.

Either way it is odd to give Total Recall, a unashamedly gory and bloody action film, a 15 certificate.

The film contains around 30 uses of strong language. The BBFC's Guidelines at '15' state 'There may be frequent use of strong language (for example 'fuck')'. The Guidelines at '15' also state 'Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable'. There is some sight of bloody bullet holes, including a couple of bullet holes in foreheads, and some bloody bullet impacts as various characters are shot. However, little is seen in terms of injury detail and there is no dwelling on the infliction of pain or injury. In one scene, a man is stabbed in the neck with a large bolt, resulting in a brief gory image, after which a man is impaled through the head with a sharp pole. However, the images in question are relatively brief and the impact of the violence is reduced by the fantastical setting and by the comic one liners delivered by the main character.

Interesting. I'm still fairly surprised at this.

The cert has changed over the years. The differentiation now tends to be on the nature and intent of the violence. COmic book to torture porn might be the extremes of the scale. I've got no problem seeing Total Recall at 15 now, and I'm not surprised to see it was a close call in the first place.

Well im in Ireland and i guess the irish ratings board have the common sense to rate a Paul Verhoeven film 18 as anything less would be an insult to the man.

Mmm - keeping the 18 would be more likely to be a PR thing for the look of it, I agree.
