So, XKCD had a comic yesterday, talking about how online ratings are pretty useless. This is something I'm pretty interested in.

Anyway, I wanted to see what everyone thought about whether the 5-star rating works for movies, or if it's worth doing something new. I'm definitely in the latter camp. So, what do you think, are 5-stars good enough, and what would work better?

Also, sorry if this is in the wrong forum, I just signed up!

Edit - Empire doesn't allow advertising and personal sites/blogs aren't advertised in posts. I've added it to your sig.

I don't find anything wrong with the 5 star system. People always complain that it doesn't give enough detail, but that's what the actual review is for.

Why are movie ratings even important? If you don't want to read a review for fear of spoilers, read the review summary. This tells you everything you need to know and doesn't spoil the movie.

This obsession with ratings and comparing this film to that film because they have the same or different rating is, frankly, tiresome and unintelligent. Although it does provide some amusing comments over in the Reviews section when two completely incomparable films are brought together based on their star rating.

Said it before, many times. Judge a film by the review, not the star rating.

Or else introduce a more precise scoring system: out of 100 or something. Even add half stars would make it slightly better, but overall the review should speak for itself.

I don't understand the spammers who just quote lines from previous posts. Is it supposed to be damaging?

Are movie ratings relevant? They're really just convenient shorthand for "This movie's shite/great/awrite, ah suppose." And therefore, just an opinion. I prefer to make up my own mind.

Chris Hewitt broke them forever when he gave Attack of the Clones 5-stars.

It's funny cos it's true.

(I gave that last post three stars, BTW. I think that makes it "good." Others may choose to disagree, however...)

I agree with making up your own mind when it comes to whether a movie sucks or rocks. But on certain occasions, online ratings get to save you from spending way more than you would have considering the film's quality. This is especially true considering the unnecessarily bloated hype given to most movies nowadays.
