I think there's a whole load of action films which follow the 'Die Hard with.....' aren't there? Speed being likened to 'Die Hard on a bus' for example.

Yes and as the legend goes, one time a dude was pitching an idea for a film and he tried to sell it as 'it's Die Hard.......in a building........'

Reminds me a bit of The Simpsons: "this is just like that movie Speed 2, but with a bus instead of a boat!"

Oh, beg pardon. Everything you do is a bit of light-hearted fun, and therefore transcends criticism.

My bad.

That's OK. I accept your humble apology in the spirit it was intended...

Sorry, what? Ohhhhhh... I seeeeee! You were being sarcastic? How's that working out for you, BTW? The whole sarcastic, passive-aggressive, needlessly confrontational thing? Cos it strikes me that some folks round here are incredibly literal-minded and insist on taking absolutely everything at face value with very little time for wit, nuance or ambiguity. Must be a "humour pending" thing.

Is it a mod's job to criticise every damn thing, BTW? Not very moderate, is it? Quis Custodiet Ipsos Custodes?, as the saying goes. Or am I being... Juvenal?

So much as I would love to get sucked into yet another pointless, neverending and unwinnable online argument about... er... Anyway, if you'll excuse me, there's bound to be somewhere on this dedicated film website where I can actually talk about films sensibly with like minded individuals without this constant polis harassment

Where?

I have to say that at the time of the flick's release, Walter Hill was quite upfront about Last Man Standing being a remake of A Fistful of Dollars. Not really a "Stealth Remake", if I'm understanding the term correctly.

I quite like Last Man Standing. It's very rare to see a film in which Bruce Willis plays a lead character who isn't as sympathetic as John McClane.

I thought this thread was going to be about the 2005 movie Stealth, starring the charmingly smarmy Josh Lucas, the bonerific Jessica Biel and the annoyingly-named Jamie Foxx. I am disappoint.

I forgot that film existed until you mentioned it. Which is odd because it has Biel in a bikini, yes?

Last Man Standing isn't so much a remake of Yojimbo/A Fistful of Dollars as a straight adaptation of the Dashiel Hammett gangster novel, Red Harvest, which Yojimbo ripped-off in the first place. Miller's Crossing slyly lifts its plot too - smart gangster caught in the middle of a bloody turf war plays the middle against both ends.

Someone beat me to the lion king is Hamlet with lions but (now bear with me as I haven't seen it for ages) but isn't the Long Kiss Goodnight basically an adaptation of the Bourne Identity but with a woman?

So the Bourne identity is a remake of the long kiss goodnight

Always thought the plot of De Palma's Scarface bore more than a passing resemblance to Macbeth.

Don't be fucking stupid.

WAB 2 is clearly a "stealth remake" of Tarkovsky's Solaris.

Whoops. That never occurred to me. I like Josh Lucas. After his camp villain turn in Hulk, my money was on him to play The Joker in The Dark Knight. (I believe he auditioned for Harvey Dent.)

I love Last Man Standing. Aside from the ridiculous physics when someone gets shot, its a stone cold classic.

Of course, you're right.

It's a BLATANT remake of GF2, but I clearly didn't pick up on the subtleties of the nods to Solaris (or, rather, Solyaris).

I also, genuinely, love Last Man Standing.
