A great pity that anyone reaches a situation where they feel this is necessary.

Can't believe it. Was probably my favourite director (unpopular opinion) but true.

Hmm, yeah, first thing I thought. Very sad news, especially only at 68, we'll know soon enough why I'm sure.
Before all the bullshit and rumours start, I'll state this is a very sad loss and I enjoyed pretty much all of his films, seems a shame we never get to see Top Gun 2 either.
RIP.

Very sad news. I love Crimson Tide and Man on Fire. And Unstoppable was bloody good fun as well.

Favourite Scott moment - in Man on Fire when Creasy's talking to Lisa after the kidnapping and she says "kill them all", after which Denzel tools up to the tune of Nine Inch Nails. Awesome.

Very sad and shocking news indeed. He made some cracking good films - for The Last Boy Scout alone, I'm eternally grateful to him!

Weirdly, I just looking at my DVD shelves the other day and realised I didn't own True Romance. Maybe I should buy it in his memory!

RIP Tony. My heart and thoughts go out to his family.

Very sad news.

Always enjoyed Tony's movies over his brothers.

Rest in Power, Mr Scott.

This must also be devestating news for Sir Ridley, having lost a brother many years earlier to cancer (if I remember correctly), and now losing another....

Why Tony? Something awful must've happened, enough for him to take his own life...

Really sad news.

It's always been a source of joking that I like Tony Scott's films, when it's Ridley Scott's films I really, really, like. But the truth is that I do like Tony Scott's films. They're big and brassy and over the top, and a completely different kind of film to his brother's.

I said it on Twitter, that most of the time it's a cynical sonofabitch, but right now almost everything on my feed is an outpouring of shock at the death of, and celebration of the achievements of one man's life.

I read Twitter before I read a news article, so actually it came as a shock to read of allegedly how he died. He was the same age as my mother - I can't comprehend anyone taking their own life - if indeed he did - never mind at his age.

That being said can I preempt that we please, please, keep speculation to a minimum. It's unhelpful, and disrespectful, not to mention potentially litigious.

Requiescam in pace, Tony Scott.

Just shocked. I caught the news on the radio in the gym. I wasn't really listening and just heard "Director of Top Gun" had died. It was only on the second time round that I realised who that was, just so unexpected and tragic.

To echo sentiments on his films above. I think he's made more good than bad films, Crimson Tide and Spy Games for example I really like.

Very sad news indeed.

So sad, and so shocking.

Maybe not the most critically acclaimed of directors but he made fantastic and fun films that will continue to entertain generations for years to come.

RIP

Oh dear. This is a tragic.

I'd be lying through my teeth if I said that I was a fan of his work (I found most of his films to be tawdry, generic tripe with big flashy knobs on) but he clearly brought a lot of joy to a lot of people and, more pertinently, I can not comprehend how any man can be brought to such a low point that they feel that they have no other option but to take their own life. Such a sad, shocking end.

My sympathies are with his family.

Woke up this morning to read the news, and remembered Boy and Bicycle - the 1965 short film the Ridley Scott directed his brother in when they were just starting. Amazing to think the heights he went on towards.

Tragic. Couldn't believe it when I heard it on the news this morning. It's only looking back over his body of work that I realised how many films he made that I absolutely love. So sad.

Well this was a total shock and it's a sad loss for films in general.

When it came to flashy, glossy and hugely entertaining mainstream fare Tony Scott was one of the best. I have had a special place reserved in me for Top Gun from a very early age, True Romance is a great film, and Man on Fire is an excellent, full-on, gritty as fuck revenge flick.

And let's not forget Last Boy Scout, De Ja Vu, The Hunger, Crimson Tide, Enemy of the State and Unstoppable. Somehow Scott managed to make the image of a stationary train in the first three minutes of that film look sexy and exciting.

This guy has been entertaining me for the best part of twenty-five years, and I'm sad we won't see another film by him again. RIP, Tony Scott, you will be missed, sir.

I never felt bored watching a Tony Scott movie, Top Gun is a classic and I agree about Man on Fire as well. I feel a bit sorry for Denzel Washington as well as he was Scott's go-to guy!

Say what you like about his films, he was very good at making things look cool. Michael Bay certainly owes him a thing or two.

A complete shock, and no doubt, aside from losing Tony, it brings back some further horrible memories for Ridders when their younger brother died in the early 80s.

I was talking to a colleague earlier about it and, like many others no doubt, we were both of the opinion that his films were generally pretty rubbish. But if you look at the list on IMDB, actually the good and watchable films far outweigh the bad ones (and please note I am including Top Gun in the bad I personally find it excruciating to watch, and not just cos of Tom Cruise).

Crimson Tide and True Romance are both great and certified classics (despite the VERY obvious and out of place Tarantino schtick shoe-horned in to both scripts), but my favourite Tony film has to be Spy Game Ive always thought that that was an under rated gem, and still do.
