Was thinking the other day about films I watched when I was younger and haven't seen since. Film like Flight of the Navigator or Battle For Endor, but I also realised that a lot of those films scared the shit out of me.

I dont mean the time I watch Alien when I was 8 and the chest buster scene scared me so much that a few weeks later when I had a stomach ache i told my mom that an alien was gonna burst out of me.

I mean films like Return to Oz or Watership Down. These films that parents thought were for kids but actually scared me senseless.

So I was wondering, what films from your childhood scared you the most and have you watched any of then recently?

The Wizard of Oz. The flying monkeys, enough said. And yes, I've watched it many times since, it was a favourite of the kids, and yes, they shit themselves at the flying monkeys as well

Evil Dead. OK, it's a silly choice, but I remember my sister getting it on pirate video, it was grainy and hard to watch. I didn't see more than 10 seconds of it, but the thought that the video was in the house, and it was such an infamous film, had me scared for days on end. So actually, I was scared of the box rather than the film

The only thing that ever made me truly terrified as a young child was the extended Thriller video where he turns into a werewolf.

Though it could have been a premonition and I might have just been terrified of Michael Jackson.

The intro of the Extraterrestrial in the bushes scared the bee-Jesus out of me,and the young lead two.
Took me a while for me to find E.T cute ,because I always found him rather creepy looking.

For me it was the actual transformation process itself, mainly the noises of horror she makes as her face is changing that made my blood run cold. And still does, oddly, even though I've now seen far worse.

Hellraiser, when I was watching the episodes of Thundercats my dad recorded for me on a video that had previously had Hellraiser on it. It was like, "Thunder, Thunder, Thunder, Thun... Pinhead! Fuck!!!!"

Also, there was that time I thought the Japanese cartoon being shown on TV with the kid on an awesome motorbike and a massive gun looked like fun (it was Akira). My young mind was not ready for some of that shit.

I know the point is probably films that aren't supposed to be scary, but are still scary to kids... but, I'm scarred for life over here.

The face manipulation in Beetlejuice terrified me as a child.

I've still not seen it since...

Also the little dog that sweeps away the road in Alice in Wonderland. Terrifying.
