right that does it. im going blu. been trying to convince myself for years that dvd is good enough (even going so far as to buy a upscaling dvd player as a compromise) but when they release the prometheus dvd with literally no extras and put everything on the BR for just a couple quid more then thats it. theres no way im missing out of 3 hour docs and endless deleted scenes and Blade Runner easter eggs, having to scour around utube hoping someones posted them and quickly watching them before they get taken down. i was p****ed off enough with the odd release before now like Terminator4 DC only on BR, Star Trek 09 getting loads more docs on BR than the 2 disc dvd etc, but whats happened with Prometheus takes the cake (its like they put the tiny 10 min of del scenes on there just to annoy dvders into going blu!) no doubt the same will happen for other stuff to come like Star Trek 2, man of steel etc. i cant be buying barebones dvd like its 1999 (when was the last decent 2 disc dvd anyway? Inception?) and whats the point of having a 1080 HD tv and not using it to its full capacity?

going to replace all my faves with BR too - star wars, indy, big superman box set, alien set, predator, terminator, blade runner, apes, etc etc the works - all dvds will be going on ebay (while they are still worth a few quid) and will gradually buy the BRs (cheap as possible off amaz/ebay)..going to be a bit of a tough thing getting rid of some of the sets(some i paid full price). wont bother replacing every dvd i own of course - just the main ones will get the blu. also going to chuck out a big load of VHS as well and gradualy upgrade to megacheap amazon 0.01p dvds (ones not that fussed about i never bothered to replace with dvd but still want on disc not crappy vhs)

Congratulations. You have fallen for Fox's marketing ploy of upgrading to blu!

Seriously though i hope you enjoy the format.Just dont forget that a shit film on blu ray doesnt make it any better.Van Helsing is shit on whatever format you watch it on ( sorry DK ).

Not if you like the movie! Does seem like a weird remark to make in this thread but hey

The standard cover look like a screengrab from a bad pirate copy. The cover maybe meant to be seen with 3d glasses but don't ask me why. Like I said fans of the Alien series need to buy the 3 disc collector edition. The extras are well worth the extra costs.

Do you mean the standard cover from the 2D release with the engineer face? I really like that cover. I like the 3D star map cover too. In fact i like all three releases in terms of their artwork!

Agree, really like the standard cover, think it looks really smart, it's the edition I went for, not really fussed about extras.

That said the sticker on the front of the carboard sleeve that says something to the effect of "Questions will be answered..." by the alternate and deleted scenes is a bit of a bloody cheek, having watched them they answer fuck all!

I mean, if you aren't desperate for the documentary the Blu Ray with the movie has two commentaries, all the viral videos (most of which are extended, and really cool - Transmission in particular) and over 30 mins of delated scenes with optional commentary. So it isn't an awful bunch of extras if you just want the one disk.

But yes, the doc is really interesting. The design work is really interesting and it is cool seeing Giger meeting Scott again.

I am amazed the standard Blu Ray edition lacked so much extras. It's almost barebone if it weren't for the extra deleted scenes. Anyone wanting extras need to buy the 3d editions and the extras are well worth the money. The only downside is the extra 3d disc and a very horrible boxcover.

Not if you get the steelbook!

Don't forget the 2d version also has 2 audio commentaries and all the viral marketing vids.

The cover with the star map. It just look cheap and tacky.

Have to agree, the star map cover aint that great. It's a good image from the film, but for some reason it doesnt look very clear, and looks slightly blurry with not much definition. Strange that it looks such a low quality image as the overall package is great.

I have the model before this one and can highly recommend Toshiba players. This is a very good price IMO.

I want to get this but will it play Region B 3D Blu Rays and Region 1 DVDs? Also what 3D TV and speakers do you recommend? Thanks.

It will play region B 3D blus yes, i can't say for certain on the region 1 dvd front. I have the model before which you can make multi region by downloading a free toshiba update and installing it, i dont have all the facts on this one unfortunately. The one before is OOP now i think unfortunately, otherwise i would definitely be recommending that one.

I have a 46 inch Samsung 3D TV and am very pleased with it. I'd advise going into a store though and having a look at their demos for active and passive 3D to decide which you prefer. I went for active. I have an Orbit sound bar for my HD sound and am very pleased with that, it really kicks ass and has great bass, although i do find i have to turn it down when it gets late as some movies just take off with the sound a bit too much!

I already owned this player but love it so much i bought a spare from the above link last month. It was only £49!!! As you can see though, it's unfortunately currently out of stock. As it;s OOP i'm not sure if they'll be restocking it anytime soon. It's great as it's 3D, and with the update i mention in the post above it's region free for blus and dvds. I've heard rumblings that the newer model (whilst still excellent) is not as easy to update, or that Toshiba havent issued the firmware to do so yet.

Quite true but you could always flog them on ebay and make a couple of quid.

The Sony player is pretty much the same as the PS3, Which I've just watched the 3D version of Prometheus on. Impressed with the 3D and still love the film despite the naysayers.

Other articles suggest it's on all versions of the BR, but hopefully someone who owns it can verify.

However, I would worry if this is, as some are speculating, some sort of possible tie to the Blade Runner sequel. That would just be a bad idea, mixing the two franchises. However, I have to say one thing - to be honest, I continue to be utterly baffled by Guy Pearce's involvement in Prometheus. My thought up until now was that he only did it because he either wanted to work with Ridley Scott, wanted to appear in a (sort-of) Alien film, or both. But if this was a Nick Fury-esque cameo leading to a greater role in an entirely different film where he could appear as himself (not swathed in prosthetics etc), then that makes a strange sort of sense!

It's definitely on the 2D disc in the 3D set so I think we take it as read that it's on all the UK discs.

If there's any truth in this speculation, expect Soldier to be excised from this timeline the same way that Bryan Singer simply decided to ignore the existence of any Superman film not touched by the verisimilitude of Richard Donner!

Well judging from one of the interviews he gave to The Metro where he uses the phrase "Fundamentally A Directors Cut" about the deleted scenes I'm not so sure I mean it's not like we've not been down this road with Ridley before is it?

Oops.. I meant Region A 3D Blu Rays! Also, you need a 3DTV for the 3D Blu Ray Player to work?

I just want a 3D Blu Ray that plays multi region Blu Rays and DVDs with WiFi. Too many to choose from!

If you buy just the 2D Blu Ray you will be missing out on a very long making of called Furious Gods which sounds awesome! I have the 3D Play steelbook on pre-order for this. It's worth noting that the press release only on Blu Ray will you get the extra content. It also says to see the movie as it's meant to be viewed, suggesting that anyone who watches this on DVD is not seeing it the way Ridley intended Time to upgrade to Blu DVD peeps! Seriously though, i'm stoked with this listing of extras, it looks awesome

You know what mate, you're right about upgrading! DVD is getting totally shafted far too often now so it's time to take the plunge. I don't love Prometheus as a film but I like it enough to want all those special features!

I only bought my first DVD player years ago cos Fight Club wasn't available in widescreen on video. I was pissed off about this at first cos I knew I was being cynically exploited by Satan's little marketing helpers who in turn knew that saddoes like me would shell out to see films like Fight Club the way they were meant to be seen.

Of course I wasn't pissed for long and was happy to be "exploited" in this way. Especially after watching Gladiator on disc for the first time - WOW! Then there were the extras of course...

I switched to bluray when my last DVD player went tits up but am selective about what I shell out extra for on HD - Fincher and Nolan movies mostly which DO look better, and big event movies like The Avengers and Prometheus. (I'm still not convinced about older movies on HD, though. Bluray really doesn't do films like Apocalypse Now any favours and the Star Wars Trilogy looks fecking AWFUL on bluray which cruelly exposes all the old transparencies and travelling mattes, etc which the Special Editions were supposed to have tidied up - watch the speeder bike chase in ROTJ on bluray and weep!)

But while I'm happy to pick and choose which format I watch what on, I find this latest marketing ploy disturbing. I resent that completists like myself have to shell out for 3D to get all the extras whether they want 3D or not. I'm worried that Dredd is only available in 3D with the boring old 2D flat-o-vision version as a mere "extra" (a sign of things to come? It was all but impossible to see Dredd in 2D at the cinema as well - oh-oh...)

And I think it's absolutely scandalous that DVD buyers are getting shafted like this. They're being treated like second-class citizens - "NO EXTRAS FOR YOU, DVD-OWNING SCUM!" There is no excuse whatsoever for not including the extras on the DVD. It is cynical exploitation of the worst kind, holding fans hostage to their OCD, and forcing them to switch formats. How long now before DVDs disappear from the shelves like VHS did? And how long before 3D becomes our only option whether we want it not?

I'M MAD AS HELL AND I'M NOT GONNA TAKE THIS ANY MORE!

(Only I will. I'm an anally retentive fanboy who'll just meekly accept everything his evil corporate overlords throw at him with nary a whimper. Thank you sir, may I please have another? Grrr...)

Of course we still don't know what the 11.10.12 thing is yet. If it is an extended cut I will apologise to each of you - but I am 99.9% confident that this is it.

I was absolutely convinced (well, quietly hopeful) that it was going to be the surprise announcement that Prometheus and Paradise were shot back-to-back and the sequel would be out in 2013. But it was not to be. Still doesn't explain how it took six months to shoot the mostly set-bound Prometheus, though. Scott doesn't mess about. So what was he doing all that time? And under such tight security?

So you never know...

Well like i said i think it's unfair that DVD owners are being given the cold shoulder, but such is the way the market is moving. I'm pretty sure Blu Ray will be the last physical format we will have. If not, i'll embrace the next one with open arms!

Yeah. I don't envisage my kid ever buying a physical format of anything in his life. Except when buying his old man a present of course. Physical formats are the new 78s!

The difference between Blu-ray and DVD is much bigger than the difference between DVD and VHS.

Oh COME.ON! The difference between VHS and DVD was huge.

The difference between DVD and blu is marginal at best. They are both disc based formats and it's just that blus have more storage space allowing slightly better pic and sound quality.

Wow so much wrong!

DVD was revolutionary, there is no question of that.

I'd agree that the impact DVD had was far greater than the impact Blu-ray has had. The shift from analogue video to digital was huge; and the shift from a bulky, easily damaged tape casette that degraded slightly after every viewing to a small disc which, with care, would work as well on the 100th viewing as it did on the 1st was massive.

The difference between Blu-ray and DVD is an evolutionary step. If we concentrate on image quality, which is what most of us judge these things by, using crude mathematics the increase in potential spatial resolution between these two formats is greater than between DVD and VHS, but as I keep repeating spatial resolution is only one factor which affects perceived image quality.

The increase in dynamic range, colour resolution and image stability going from VHS to DVD was huge, whereas the increase between DVD and Blu-ray is relatively small. Blu-ray still uses 8bit video with compressed colour resolution. I'd be willing to concede that, whatever the figures might imply, the jump from VHS to DVD was bigger than the jump from DVD to Blu-ray, at least in the real world. DVD is still perfectly watchable, even on relatively large screens whereas VHS is a horrible mess.

That isn't to say that Blu-ray isn't a huge upgrade: it is. For film fans and videophiles it allows us to approach the image quality of a really good professional screening room or a top flight commercial theatre. In many cases we can have better picture quality at home than our local multiplex. That is huge, but you need a relatively specialised set up (either a large screen or a close viewing position) to get the most from Blu-ray: something most of us don't have the luxury of. For most of us the room layout dictates our distance from the screen whereas ideally the distance to the screen should direct room layout. Again, when we look at real world situations many of us are not making the most of Blu-ray's potential. Some of us might as well still be watching DVD.

The next step in home theatre is apparently going to be 4k at home, which is 4 times the spatial resolution of Blu-ray. Personally I don't see the point, but that may change.

I used to dl a lot, but i hardly do it at all now, if ever. I can't remember the last movie i did it with. I'm really keen to support movies and retailers so we have a healthy market here in the UK. A good movie is worth the cost IMO.

And the quality is ALWAYS better.

Er... Having said that, my bluray of Prometheus kept freezing and/or pixilating, usually around chapters 14 and 15 - about 50 minutes in. Frustrating.

Even after replacing the disc and a firmware upgrade for my Samsung BD-C5300 it's still acting up a bit; there's the odd wee, barely perceptible, stuttering glitch, I had to turn it off and on when it froze again, and the disc always takes ages to load. Longer than usual, I mean. The menus and extras were fine, BTW. (Anyone else notice the cheeky wee Blade Runner reference buried in the text of The Peter Weyland Files? And is it canon?* Is this the "easter egg" people have been hinting at or is there something I'm missing?)

Does this ring any bells? An encoding problem do you think or am I just cursed? I never had a problem with DVDs but I do find blurays can be a bit... tempremental.

* I'm joking, of course. Anyone who talks about "canon" who isn't a theologian should be shot out of a cannon!

Do Blurays have the equivalent of the changing layers problem that DVDs can have, if they're poorly manufactured?

I don't think that's an issue any more what with the larger capacity of bluray discs. I don't even notice layer changes on old DVDs any more - maybe modern players are faster or something.

(My favourite layer change was on the original Fight Club DVD - a close up of a door closing so you didn't even notice the pause. Unlike the original Bond releases where the layer changes were completely arbitrary. Like in the middle of the Tilly Masterson death sequence in Goldfinger, interrupting the music and everything!)
