To bring this back (sort-of) to Prometheus, there's a bit where you see a closeup of David's fingers, when he's playing with black gloop. I haven't seen the film in HD but am told that the quality is so sharp that you can see the little W (for Weyland) on David's fingertip. I'm not sure if the DVD could display that level of detail?

I remember seeing this in photos that were released before the movie. You'd be able to make it out on DVD, just like everything though, it wouldn't be nearly as sharp and clear

WOuld you also say that an average Blu transfer would be better than a good DVD? I mean, even an HDTV transfer may not compare against some of the very best Blu trasnfers, but I'd have to say they would be far better than most top end DVD trasnfers.

Also, in terms of the leap in quality, I've noticed things while watching movies on Blu (movies I love and have seen hundreds of times over) that I had never seen before, certain colours, details on costumes and sets and a detail in fast moving scenes that sometimes seem lost on DVD, recent examples being Alien and Jaws. Seeing those on Blu was like seeing them for the very first time, just brilliant.

In my experience, and that is all I can go by, I have never seen a Blu-ray which didn't significantly outperform even the best DVD. Even the most problematic discs I've seen are better than DVD. There may be some which are so bad that the DVD is actually better, but I haven't seen them.

By-and-large the less content on the DVD's will simply reinforce people to get there content from the Web.Rether it be from Torrents or downloadable files on Rapidshare,Hotfile etc, because I'd be lying if it wasn't one of my port of calls, unfortunately.

I used to dl a lot, but i hardly do it at all now, if ever. I can't remember the last movie i did it with. I'm really keen to support movies and retailers so we have a healthy market here in the UK. A good movie is worth the cost IMO.

The blu ray transfer of Predator is reportedly horrific. An awful DNR'd mess.

Escape From New York is reportedly an awful Blu ray transfer as well.

The dvds of these films dont have these problems.

Oh i'm not judging you mate or having a go. I used to do it loads. I've become a bit snobby too with regard to picture and audio quality so dont like to settle for anything less than the real deal.

There's two releases of Predator on blu. the first had a lot of natural grain which apparently looks nice, good detail etc. For some reason they felt the need to redo it and obliterated a lot of the detail creating a waxy mess, like you say above. One of my friends hates grain and loves the reissue of Predator I try to tell him how wrong he is, but he's not having any of it. He doesnt seem to understand that grain is inherent to film.

I believe Escape from New york is an upscale? Someone please correct me on this. The worst i've seen is Machine Girl which is definitely an upscale, aliasing all over the place, looks horrific.

I have seen the Predator re-issue and it is pretty awful for a Blu-ray. There are a couple of scenes in particular where the grain scrubbing has made the actors look like weird CG creations. But for the vast majority of the shots, if not all of them, it is still significantly better than the DVD. Many people would see it as a decent upgrade. I am not one of them.
.
That isn't to say it is a good disc: far from it. But "better than the DVD" is damning with faint praise.

I have not seen the Escape from New York disc so can't comment on it

I'm sure directorscut could provide a long list of titles similarly afflicted to a greater or lesser extent. We have had our run ins, but I think we broadly agree that there are discs where too much digital tomfoolery has been had. Where we differ is where the line should be drawn rather than that the line in fact exists.

DVDs are routinely scrubbed of grain as compression is much more efficient without it. In a DVD the "graininess" is usually compression artefacts rather than real grain. So it isn't so much that the DVDs don't have the problems, rather that the problems are masked by other factors.

I quite like the film! You can see some of the reasons it might not have been fully successful. But you never get the sense anyone was coasting here, unlike say, Alien Res and the AVP movies.

I mean, if you aren't desperate for the documentary the Blu Ray with the movie has two commentaries, all the viral videos (most of which are extended, and really cool - Transmission in particular) and over 30 mins of delated scenes with optional commentary. So it isn't an awful bunch of extras if you just want the one disk.

But yes, the doc is really interesting. The design work is really interesting and it is cool seeing Giger meeting Scott again.

I find extra's really fascinating, especially with this Film.
I think I have watched extras far more than the film itself in recent years.

I've just got back from Bath, and my Steelbook was waiting for me. Gonna rewatch the movie after i've watched the deleted/ alternate scenes. Then hopefully the big documentary. I would rather the steelbook be debossed/embossed but it's cool as it is anyway

right that does it. im going blu. been trying to convince myself for years that dvd is good enough (even going so far as to buy a upscaling dvd player as a compromise) but when they release the prometheus dvd with literally no extras and put everything on the BR for just a couple quid more then thats it. theres no way im missing out of 3 hour docs and endless deleted scenes and Blade Runner easter eggs, having to scour around utube hoping someones posted them and quickly watching them before they get taken down. i was p****ed off enough with the odd release before now like Terminator4 DC only on BR, Star Trek 09 getting loads more docs on BR than the 2 disc dvd etc, but whats happened with Prometheus takes the cake (its like they put the tiny 10 min of del scenes on there just to annoy dvders into going blu!) no doubt the same will happen for other stuff to come like Star Trek 2, man of steel etc. i cant be buying barebones dvd like its 1999 (when was the last decent 2 disc dvd anyway? Inception?) and whats the point of having a 1080 HD tv and not using it to its full capacity?

going to replace all my faves with BR too - star wars, indy, big superman box set, alien set, predator, terminator, blade runner, apes, etc etc the works - all dvds will be going on ebay (while they are still worth a few quid) and will gradually buy the BRs (cheap as possible off amaz/ebay)..going to be a bit of a tough thing getting rid of some of the sets(some i paid full price). wont bother replacing every dvd i own of course - just the main ones will get the blu. also going to chuck out a big load of VHS as well and gradualy upgrade to megacheap amazon 0.01p dvds (ones not that fussed about i never bothered to replace with dvd but still want on disc not crappy vhs)

Watched a bunch of the extras over the weekend, but havent watched the making of yet.

Loving the deleted scenes to be honest. Id heard rumblings that they didnt really add much and that was probably why they were not being used to create a new cut, however, I thought some really did add to certain characters. The scene between Vickers and Janek was really good and added a more human element to Vickers, and gave a more natural feel to Janek's realisation of what was happening. The first discovery of life by Milburn was good too, and makes his actions later in the movie (when confronted with the xeno-cobra thingy) seem more plausible. The slight extension of drunk Holloway arguing with Shaw was pretty good as again, it gives a few more hints of how characters (in particular Shaw) is piecing together things. I lived the extended Vickers ad Weyland chat, and it was nice to hear her reference Holloways mutant sperm monster in the next room. The extended confrontation between Weyland and The Engineer just felt better too, and the finale as he stalks Shaw in the lifepod and her fight with him was much, much better than what was in the final cut. All things that I thought coulve improved things in the movie,it would still have had issues, but a few beats here and there wouldve helped. One alternate scene that I preferred that I didnt expect to, was the CG version of the Fifield beast. I never thought I'd be preferring CG over pravtical effects and make up, but the beast here felt much more 'Alien' and seemed to fit better with the feel of the rest creature design, and as the CG beastie bounced around it felt much stranger, more Alien-like and didnt feel like a stuntman bouncing round on wires. I was really surprised to prefer that! All in all, it's a good set of additional scenes and could help miprove things. I liked em.

I agree porntrooper! I really loved the extended scene with the engineer searching for Shaw in the lifepod. I love the bit where he fondles the chandelier as if bemused by it, then sees the video of the girl playing the violin. It hints that maybe things couldve taken a different turn at that moment, until Shaw hits him an axe! I think cutting this scene down to the bare bones was a huge mistake. There's tension in it, but like i said, it really adds to the character of the engineer.

I am amazed the standard Blu Ray edition lacked so much extras. It's almost barebone if it weren't for the extra deleted scenes. Anyone wanting extras need to buy the 3d editions and the extras are well worth the money. The only downside is the extra 3d disc and a very horrible boxcover.

Not if you get the steelbook!

Don't forget the 2d version also has 2 audio commentaries and all the viral marketing vids.

right that does it. im going blu. been trying to convince myself for years that dvd is good enough (even going so far as to buy a upscaling dvd player as a compromise) but when they release the prometheus dvd with literally no extras and put everything on the BR for just a couple quid more then thats it. theres no way im missing out of 3 hour docs and endless deleted scenes and Blade Runner easter eggs, having to scour around utube hoping someones posted them and quickly watching them before they get taken down. i was p****ed off enough with the odd release before now like Terminator4 DC only on BR, Star Trek 09 getting loads more docs on BR than the 2 disc dvd etc, but whats happened with Prometheus takes the cake (its like they put the tiny 10 min of del scenes on there just to annoy dvders into going blu!) no doubt the same will happen for other stuff to come like Star Trek 2, man of steel etc. i cant be buying barebones dvd like its 1999 (when was the last decent 2 disc dvd anyway?

Congratulations. You have fallen for Fox's marketing ploy of upgrading to blu!

Seriously though i hope you enjoy the format.Just dont forget that a shit film on blu ray doesnt make it any better.Van Helsing is shit on whatever format you watch it on ( sorry DK ).

I decided to do a similar thing a couple of months back. I was in the middle of a cull of my DVD collection and decided to get rid of the lot (although I did retain the films in a sense - not legal strictly speaking). Just make sure you have a look out for various reviews of the titles you want to upgrade to BR - there are several that have undergone very substandard conversions and it is likely they will be re-released again in the future - see Predator, Gangs of New York.

A sure fire way of getting rid of your DVDs in one big swoop is at car boot sales. I found that the majority of my titles were going for 1p on Amazon so offloaded at a car boot for 1 to 1.50 (you do have to get up early on a Sunday for them and encounter some rather strange individuals!).

Back to Prometheus - definitely not a purchase for me. I was very much on the fence with the film - moments of brilliance overshadowed by those of idiocy. Having seen a lot of the deleted scenes popping up online I felt they would have improved it (i.e. Milburn capturing some worms, alternative Fifielld attack, Engineer speaks, etc) - some really poor choices in the editing room if you ask me.

The standard cover look like a screengrab from a bad pirate copy. The cover maybe meant to be seen with 3d glasses but don't ask me why. Like I said fans of the Alien series need to buy the 3 disc collector edition. The extras are well worth the extra costs.

Do you mean the standard cover from the 2D release with the engineer face? I really like that cover. I like the 3D star map cover too. In fact i like all three releases in terms of their artwork!
