Except, Dredd was written and went into production first. It's just an unfortunate coincidence, no 'ripping off' was done by anyone.

On topic, the first line of the OP says that this year has been a 'geekfest' to rival 1982, which as a Joss Whedon fan, I agree with.

(there are so many films this year I haven't seen yet )

1999 for me.

Off the top of my head* you had :-

Fight Club, The Matrix, Being John Malkovich, Office Space, The Sixth Sense, American Beauty, Magnolia, The Talented Mr Ripley, Sleepy Hollow, Toy Story 2, American Pie, Austin Powers 2, Galaxy Quest, Dogma, Any Given Sunday, Blair Witch Project, The Insider, Audition, The Iron Giant, Cider House Rules, Go, Boys Don't Cry, Three Kings, Man on The Moon, South Park the Movie, Mystery Men, The Hurricane, Election, Ghost Dog, Arlington Road etc.

I'm not a fan of all the above films but I'd say the majority of them were well received with a few being stone cold classics.

That was the one I thought of too. D'ont forget Into the Wild, Atonement, La Vie en Rose, Bourne Ultimatum, The Lives of Others, Persepolis, King of Kong, This is England and of course Zodiac.

 2007 for me, too...

Into The Wild, Eastern Promises, Knocked Up, Zodiac, Die Hard 4, Assembly, The Bourne Ultimatum, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, 3:10 To Yuma, American Gangster, Wanted, Sweeney Todd, Ghost In The Shell: Solid State Society, and Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End are all in my top 100 from that decade. There's also Blood Brothers, City Of Men, Persepolis and Tell No One.

Though despite all of the predictable complaints about dumbing down, unoriginality, etc. I think every year since the middle of the last decade has been pretty consistent for great movies being released.

It's been a decent year so far from what I've seen but the the thing I'm looking forward to most is the final part of Hertzfeldt's Bill Trilogy to be released on dvd. Only then will my life be complete.
