29. 24 Hour Party People

Steve Coogan is perfect casting as the king of the "Madchester" scene, Tony Wilson. Michael Winterbottom's films is a fun little look into the music scene of the '80s and early '90s in Manchester. It has some great moments where the fourth wall is broken and pokes fun at being artsy and postmodern. Coogan gives quite possibly his best performance however, perhaps second only to Alan Partridge.

28. Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance

First film of Park Chan-Wook's revenge trilogy is a visually striking and brutal film. It's very much in the same vein as the other two, if held back slightly on the style front. It remains an incredibly daring film and the director definitely pushes the boundaries in terms of portraying violence on the screen. The tone is more black comedy in this one as well I would say.

27. The Good Girl

This small scale indpendent film has provided Jennifer Aniston with her best film role. She plays the bored store worker who risks her marriage by getting involved with a younger man. It's a nice mix of comedy and drama and has good performances from the cast and Aniston certainly delivers. It's a shame she has continued to just go back to her typecast Rachel-like roles. Jake Gyllenhaal is also very good here.

2 brilliant films that would be in my top 20 for the year and one that was more watchable than I thought it would be, The Good Girl.

26. Secretary

This is a bold, well handled portrayal of sadomasochism. It's a tricky subject that's treated with adult humour and emotions and a lot of the success of the film comes from Maggie Gyllenhaal's breakthrough performance as the submissive secretary recently released from a mental hospital. There's also a nice underside to the story that shows the healing power of love, no matter how weird the relationship can be.

I do. It's been on my to watch pile for ages but after watching Oldboy I've been psyching myself up for it somewhat. I'm still not quite ready .

25. Solaris

This got some mixed reviews on release but I think it's worth checking out again. Soderbergh's take on the sci-fi novel that was adapted very successfully  by Andrei Tarkovsky in the '70s was certainly an odd choice. It plays out like Titanic in space and is much more interested in the romance and psychological drama of the story than the usual sci-fi elements. I think that's why it makes the film so unique and is helped by a pitch perfect performance from Clooney. The film does have flaws but for me this was a risk worth taking and they pulled off a pretty good film.

24. Confessions of a Dangerous Mind

George Clooney's directorial debut following the autobiography of CIA agent / TV host Chuck Barris is a flashy film that seems to mix all the styles of the '70s Hollywood filmmakers with the oddness of the Coens and the stylish camera work of Soderbergh. The film doesn't flow perfectly but it's an unusual likeable shaggy dog of a film much the same way as the main character is, played with quirky abandon by Sam Rockwell in one of his best performances.

23. One Hour Photo

This a creepy psychological drama that contains quite a spectacular performance from Robin Williams as the photo lab worker who is obsessed by a happy family. The film is expertly shot by director Mark Romanek who shoots everything in a cold, lab like light. It's a memorable film that has moments of dark humour amongst the tense feeling of unease. Williams meanwhile really should have been Oscar nominated.

22. Punch-Drunk Love

A love-it or hate-it type of film, PT Anderson escapes from the heavy drama of Magnolia by concocting this light, breezy and extremely quirky romantic tale of an unlucky chap who falls in love. It really is smack you in the face with a baseball quirky there's nothing subtle about it, except for the lovely performances from the leads. I can not stand Adam Sandler at the best of times but he truly gives something resembling a performance here and is surprisingly excellent casting. Meanwhile Emily Watson is at her illuminous best. And I love that soundtrack!

21. Bowling for Columbine

Michael Moore's controversial documentary certainly pulls out all the stops to get a debate started on the state of America's gun culture. It's a fast moving, funny and scary documentary and provides plenty to think about. There's some great moments in here, such as the history of America animation sequence and the montage of America's news channels creating a sense of dread about everything from poison gas to killer bees. Whilst the Columbine and 9/11 footage are still chillingly portrayed. Other moments, such as the attack on Charlton Heston are slightly misjudged. Still, it's a very powerful piece of work.

 Not seen 24 Hour or Mr Vengeance.

Quite like The Good Girl, not a fan of Secretary, Solaris is better than the original, Confessions, Columbine and One Hour Photo are great. Punch Drunk Love is good but probably my least favourite Anderson film.

24 Hour Party People 9/10 - May well be Winterbottom's best film.

The Good Girl 6/10 - A little dull but better than you would expect.

Secretary 9/10 - Outstanding, oddly moving and Spader/Gyllenhaal make a dyimate combination!

Solaris 8/10 - As good as the original in its own way.

COADM 7/10 - Good fun.

One Hour Photo 7.5/10 - Williams does creepy really well.

Punch Drunk Love 7.5/10 - Its a lesser PTA but still thrilling.

Bowling For Columbine 8/10 For all its flaws still one of the most redical and powerful docs of the last decade.

Keep up the good work!

20. 25th Hour

Edward Norton gives a powerful performance as a drug dealer contemplating his last life over his last 24 hours of freedom before going to jail. This is a strong solid drama and has a great cast (Barry Pepper is excellent as Norton's shady friend). Although it may be morally ambiguous it still has some outstanding moments such as Norton's memorable monologue on the state of New York. I remember this being the first film to fully acknowledge the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks and it's quite effective that it comes from director Spike Lee.

19. Phone Booth

This is just a full-on visceral thriller in the mould of films like Speed. The premise is set up quickly and despite stuck in one location it plays out very quickly and overall is a thoroughly enjoyable popcorn movie. Colin Farrell impresses as he is on screen for the whole running time (a delightfully swift 80 minutes) and director Joel Schumacher continues to make up for the Batman tragedy. Hollywood hokum at its best.

18. Gone Nutty (short)

The further adventures of Scrat were exploited to extremely funny lengths in this short added to the Ice Age DVD. This is probably the best thing to come out of the whole Ice Age series. The character is very likeable and the short is hilarious.

17. Bubba Ho-Tep

A completely off-the-wall horror comedy which follows Elvis (Bruce Campbell) and JFK (Ossie Davis) going up against an ancient killing mummy within an old folks home. Luckily the film has more to offer than just a crazy premise and it plays the whole thing totally straight faced. Campbell and Davis are both great and the film is delightfully insane. One of the oddest horror movies of the past ten years.

16. About Schmidt

Alexander Payne's movies seem to follow the same blue-print of having a winning mix of comedy and drama as it follows a protagonist at a crossroads in his life. Jack Nicholson gives a performance that reminds you of just how excellent and subtle an actor he can be as the downbeat old gent going on a roadtrip to visit his soon to be wed daughter after his wife's death. It's a lovely, warm hearted and often very funny film and Nicholson is fantastic.

15. Road to Perdition

A richly evocative period film from Sam Mendes following on from the success of American Beauty. The film looks absolutely stunning, production design, cinemtaography and costumes all pitch perfect. The cast are all excellent, especially Paul Newman who steals every second he's on the screen. There's a lovely score as well from Thomas Newman. The story may become a little predictable but this is a very handsome production.

14. Hero

Visually stunning martial arts epic from Zhang Yimou. Jet Li is perfectly cast as the nameless assassin who comes to take down a brutal ruler. The film has a poetic quality amongst the outstanding action sequences and the cast are perfect. It may not have the romantic heart that was at the forefront of Ang Lee's similar Crouching Tiger but this film is more interested in the lone lifestyle of a warrior. The framework is somewhat reminiscent of Rashomon which means it can get a little confusing on first watch. You get too swept away by how beautiful the film is to really care though.

13. Equilibrium

Equilibrium is not as good as nearly all the films that it's clearly been inspired by. Yet it's still a film I love to watch, it is a sci-fi with a heart and takes a more intelligent stand than most dumb action movies. Set in a totalitarian state Christian Bale's hero begins to think there should be another way to life. Bale takes things too seriously but Taye Diggs is fun in bad guy mode and the film has some really cool sequences. An under-rated gem methinks.
