 I was frankly amazed that so many people actually liked the original Expendables. It's clear to everyone what these movies have set out to do, but just don't think it accomplishes it very well. Mickey Rourke's few scenes are the highlight of that movie, and it getting a sequel so soon confused the hell out of me. This'll be another one I'll probably wait until it's shown on TV to watch.

It wouldn't have surprised me if this movie would have been better without Chuck Norris. With the Chuck Norris joke meme, people appear to have forgotten that he's only ever actually been in one decent film... in which he loses to Bruce Lee. The rest of his filmography is cringe-worthy direct to DVD quality crap.

I'm only interested in this for JCVD, Jet Li and Statham. The rest are over the hill or lacking in charisma. Hopefully this film at least shows that we need more of those three guys on the big screen. I'm really keen on seeing Arnie back on the big screen but not in this mess, doing his best Arnie like he's in a Japanese commercial or something.

Stallone needs to quit writing movies. Some of the dialogue is so bad that it actually makes me wince.

For me this movie is all about JCVD. I couldn't give a rat's ass about Expendables 2. I just want him to be on the big screen again.

Somebody make Hard Target 2. Get John Woo back.

 I have a feeling that this thread will escalate quite quickly...  Imagine if it was a 12A too...

Shame it doesn't look like it's up to much but the then the first film was just a kind of fun novelty really (and don't get me wrong - I do mean fun!), but novelties can get old pretty quickly.  I'll probably put it on the Lovefilm list.

Oh s**t I take Willis out of my initial post. He's not over the hill at all. He's getting older but he's still pretty much the same dude who was in Die Hard. Good thing is, unlike Stallone, he's not going overboard to cover up his aging.

 Not surprised to hear it's a bit of a let down. I'll catch it later in the week, but I'm not expecting anything from it really. I just cant see that bringing in Arnie, Willis and Norris was a good idea. JVCD on the other hand has made some decent flicks in the last few years (Universal Soldier Regeneration and JVCD in particular) so I think he was always going to be one of the better people to wheel out for this. Arnie and Willis' cameo's in the original were enough, and Norris is so useless I am still stunned anyone agreed to throw cash at him to appear in this. I really do get the feeling he will be the hardest piece of this flick to swallow.

Also, I'm kinda sad Snake Eyes no longer posts, as I would be very interested to hear his thoughts and for this thread to descend into madness like a few other Expendables threads did in the past.... always fun.

Its a fair review, one of the better written negative reviews but it was far too focused on the lack of plot and hit/miss humor. The action from the look of the trailers in 2nd to none, thats what should be the focus, me thinks the critic was expecting a different kind of movie.

All I know is every single hollywood blockbuster action movie I have seen in recent years has dissapointed me completely with the action department, from MI4, Savages, Dark KNight Rises to Avengers. All I wan't to see is Sly and co kicking ass, as long as the movie has that, I will be entertained.

 Shouldn't the plot and dialogue also be good, even in a brainless action movie in order to get a good review? I mean, no one's expecting a deep and intelligent plot in this kind of thing, but it should at least measure up against similar movies. Same with the dialogue... everyone in this movie has spouted some pretty cheesy dialogue in their careers, but not much as bad as what it seems can be found in this movie. "We keep it light until we go dark, and then we go pitch black?"... what does that even mean?

Maybe the reviewer isn't in that demographic and is making a fair comment on the movie. As opposed to Den of Geek who are hailing it as triumph. Albeit a silly one with loads of explosions - the reviewer there clearly has lots of love for the 80s meat heads and forgives everything the above criticises. I guess this one (and indeed the first) will always be divisive in that way... they're just love letters to the days when men were muscled, PC didn't exist, baddies got their just deserts and everyone loved Uncle Sam.

I wonder if John Matrix will be coming out retirement soon.

I pretty much hated the first one, so I'm hoping this one will be a lot better. The review doesn't give me hope though, the negatives mentioned are things that tend to annoy me

8.1 rating on IMDB, Doesn't seem likely to fall to 5 or 6 which is the approximate equivalent of an Empire 2

I've not seen it, but considering it's just the first one with more stars, I don't expect much from it.

Oh, and didn't you get the memo? The best way to get five stars from Empire is to, I dunno, make a good film?

Partial to good films you mean? Absolutely.

I wonder if some fans will decide to bully a smaller but better reviewed film this time around? Pilgrim doesn't have a sequel. I guess we'll have to wait to see what has 4-5 stars in the next magazine.

In your opinion. Everyone's entitled to one, but that doesn't make other ones wrong, even if they're published in a magazine. Star ratings are tricky buggers anyway, and the difference between, say, a high 3 and a low 4 is hard to define. I tend to go by the meat of the review as to whether or not to see it, and since the review for Expendables 2 confirms what I reckoned this film would be (Ie-Okay action mixed with crappy everything else) I won't be seeing it. If that's your thing, go for it, but that doesn't make the review wrong.

Well of course in my opinion, I didn't say it was anyone else's. And I didn't say theirs was wrong either, but you can't honestly deny that Empire are not often starstruck/blinded by their love of their favourite people.
Point being how many of these films deserve the rating they were given and have stood the test of time to be remembered and revered as a classic? -
King Kong
Cloverfield
Attack of the clones
Intolerable cruelty
Moulin Rouge
Or some 4 star -
War of the worlds
X-men
Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull
