Director: John Waters
Year: 1994

Although Waters' films have become more polished than those ragged 70s masterpieces, they still retain the same subversive edge. Kathleen Turner gave her last great performance here as Beverly Sutphin, a seemingly normal suburban, sit-com style American mother. She's also a serial killer, taking out those she thinks have violated the polite rules of society. She targets those who don't rewind video tapes before returning them to the rental shop, those who refuse to recycle, and those who are rude to her husband or children. Some hilarious comic set-pieces (Turner beating one victim to death with a chicken leg while singing along to Annie) mix with Waters' typical savage humour to create one of the best, most overlooked, comedies of the 90s.

Year: 1994

Like a kitty-snuff take on The Aristocats, Felidae is a German animated film noir. With cats. Francis, and his can-opener move into a new neighbourhood, where he soon discovers other cats have been turning up murdered. Assissted by local cat, Bluebeard, Francis begins to investigate the attacks and finds himself caught up in a strange conspiracy that takes in seduction, bigotry, and even cat religion. It doesn't try to make the cats cute, one of the most interesting aspects of the film is that treats cats as cats, which actually makes them the perfect animal for noir. Also, the film doesn't just rely on a gimmicky presence, it creates a fascinating mystery, interesting characters, and it also has something to say about man's cruelty to species that are thought of as inferior. A brutal piece of animation, that's most definitely not for children, but that should be seen by anyone with a love of the hidden corners of animated cinema.

Serial Mom is great stuff.

Felidae I know as a book series, I had no idea it was a film.

My nineties film viewing isn’t brilliant really it’s usually quite low every year, so hoping to get a few from the list.

You can buy the Eng subbed DVD easily enough (I think it's got a dub too but I wasn't quite on board with that). It has a Boy George song too I think.

 It does, yeah. From what I've read before, the second book has him haunted by nightmares relating to the killer and worrying he might turn into a killer himself. Not sure how accurate that is.

 I'm almost certain I wrote a review for it when I saw it in 2009. Wanted to see just wrote I said, but I tried to load the page and Chrome tells me the page isn't safe. But even without reading it I know it's a crap film

 96. Lost in Yonkers



Director: Martha Coolidge
Year: 1993

Jay and Artie are young teens in 40s America. When their father is forced to travel for his job, they're packed off to live with their fearsome grandmother (Irene Worth), a woman so intense that most of her children are scared to even visit her. Luckily for the kids, their aunt Bella (Mercedes Ruehl) is still living at home. Bella is a woman-child, late 30s but acting more like a ditzy 15 year old. She gets confused at times, but is incredibly smart and more worldly than she first appears. She's also the nicest aunt anyone could hope for, but she's suffocating under her mother's thumb. The surprise visit by uncle Louie (Richard Dreyfuss) changes things for everyone. Louie is a small-time hood, on the run from bigger gangsters. He's also a breath of life in the stale house and the definition of moxie. Sentimentality is avoided, the changes are minor, but vital and the film becomes life-affirming without ever feeling cheap or obvious. Ruehl, Worth & Dreyfuss should all have been in Oscar contention.
