I can't think of a prequel at the top of my head that's improved the franchise, it's part of, or at least hasn't been a slight disappointment.

And all but the first of the original series (that I've seen, not seen Conquest). It's merely better than the original film. It doesn't have Heston in it for starters.

Was Star Trek a prequel? I'm only saying because it's opening scene made a point of changing everything that had came before.

 The Thing was essentially another remake; ROTPOTA was a long way separated from the other Planet of the Apes films so I don't know if either of them count; neither of them added anything more to what went before.

The problem with any prequel is that you know from the beginning how it's going to end (more or less) which kills the suspense a bit.

 First Class was a good prequel.

I cant really think of many prequels, let alone decent ones.

Overall I like Star Wars prequel trilogy, although I'm aware I am in an ever growing minority in that opinion. I'd probably count Star Trek as a prequel as it keeps continuity with the original franchise, so yea, thats a very good prequel. Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes I guess keeps continuity with the original Planet Of The Apes, so that holds up as a decent prequel. Other than those, I honestly cant think of many others..... good or bad. Are prequels really that prevalent these days??

I'd say The Thing 2011 definately counts as a prequel. Yea it basically hits the same beats and mimics scenes from the original (how fitting) it keeps continuity with Carpenters film, clearly keeping it's events linked. So yea, definately a prequel.

 Sorry, I missed the point of the original post, "Are Prequels A Good Idea?". Well, yea, they can be.

I've no issue with prequels (or remakes for that matter) as long as they're approached correctly and the story is good. A prequel doesn't have to ruin everything that comes after it, Star Trek being a good example. Likewise, a remake doesnt mean the original film ceases to exisist and a remake isn't complete shite by definition. The problem is when studios just rush in with projects, both remakes and prequels, with a view to keep/restart/milk a franchise without really having a desire to keep quality up.

 Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me is a great prequel. As is the aforementioned The Godfather Part 2.

 Really depends if there is enough story to merit a prequel.

2011 Thing, while actually being an OK flick, is a pretty redundant prequel because everything we need to know about those crazy Swedes was explained in the Carpenter flick. There's no sense of tension in 2011 Thing because we know that everyone dies.

Twin Peaks deserved a prequel because the universe the TV show inhabited was so rich and expansive, and there was also the opportunity to flesh out the character of Laura Palmer. Fuck, I fucking love the fucking shit of that fucking film.

ever since Batman Begins prequels have sort of given way to reboots. alot of the reboots that happened in its wake probably wouldve been prequels (or even sequels) had Begins not done it so well. Bond got rebooted which had never been done before (maybe Casino Royale would’ve been another sequel otherwise), StarTrek was a basically a reboot instead of a prequel (but at the same time was a prequel/sequel due to the star trek way of handling it) and even full on prequels like Terminator Salvation(sequel/prequel), Xmen First Class, The Thing (2011), and Prometheus have an almost reboot element to them - especially in the publicity (the studio almost seem to be reluctant to admit they are prequels - wanting them to be reboots to relaunch the franchise)

there were reboots before Begins (Burtons Apes for one - which i think was the first to coin the term 're-imagining'…plus Batman and Superman were essentially rebooting from previous incarnations…and of course tv shows like BSG, Lois & Clark etc) but it was batman begins that really showed how well it could be done in movies and because of that maybe quite a few prequels got reworked as reboots?

 Probably no worse an idea than sequels - ultimately just another way of capitalising on a film's success. Some are good, some are bad but on the whole it's just making more of the same as opposed to coming up with something new.
