Or have you done so already?

I'm currently on secondment in New Zealand and it's reminded me how much I love travelling, so I'm considering a longer move abroad once I get back to the UK. Not quite sure where - possibly Canada, given the US is such a ball-ache to get a visa for - but my company is multinational so it's a possibility and I feel life's too short to spend all of it living in one country. It's not like I can't come back again.

Has anyone got any experience of doing this?

I must admit, when I went to San Diego I spent a whole afternoon on the beach fantasising about living there. Then I remembered how rubbish american crisps and chocolate are and jumped on the first plane home.

I'd love to live in the US Nashville, Savannah, Orlando or Miami but due to the nightmare of getting a visa it's virtually impossible.

Already done and I doubt I'll ever come back.

I really want a job where I can fly back twice a year as part of the job. Just to see friends and family, and drink real ale.

Otherwise I'm staying in asia.

Also done it. Been living in California for the last 5 years - L.A for about 4 and a half and just moved to Napa recently. Love the lifestyle, the weather and the people. I definitely miss the atmosphere for football though - I watch all the games but very few people really care enough to chat about the matches or watch them in bars etc. Other than that and rarely seeing family/friends (Skype helps and everyone comes to visit) its been the best decision I could've made. I also met my girlfriend out here so can't complain (not within earshot at least!).

After I win the lottery tonight I'll be spending a few months a year abroad, but I'd still want to live here. It ain't perfect, but nowhere else is either.

In a fucking heartbeat.

I'm already working on the missus to agree to sell up one of our houses here and get a place abroad, from there it's only one more step to a full on move away from the UK. Don't get me wrong, I love my home town and it would be difficult to be away from family and friends, but a lot of little things are starting to annoy me about being at home.

I always wanted to move to Canada when I was younger, but then a couple of mates went to work there for about 6 months and when they came back they said that while it was lovely it was the most boring place ever. Put me right off the idea

My best friend moved to Australia last year and it sounds great. I love Scotland, but when I have to go to Lochee, Dundee, and see the junkies and alkies, I do want to get the hell out of here also!!

Emigrating gives you such a great perspective on life, it makes you question some of the things we do in the UK and really think about them. Our consumerism has gotten really out of hand, here people save up for an operation, in the UK we moan when we don't have two cars. It's like we will never ever be satisfied with what we have. Everyone wants to just get more and more stuff, I'm not saying Asia is that different to be honest but they are far enough behind and can take the time out to appreciate the little things, the things we seem to have forgotten. I like to keep my possessions down to what I can put into a single suitcase so moving is easier. I like keeping it simple. At least Asia is not totally infected with the sickness of greed.

That said the NHS is nice and most of my best friends are British.

I see what you mean in the context of consumerism, but is it that bad to want more, to aspire?

I lived in Paris (bleurg he's mentioning this AGAIN) and I loved it. However, it was hard and I always knew it was a temporary fixture which changed my outlook on a lot of the things I chose to do when out there - living in a grubby flat (the upside was I met two awesome people who I still keep in touch with) etc.

I'd love to emigrate to a French speaking country (perhaps even France again because it's not too far from the parents). If I did, I would be more aware of the practicalities this time, then the last time I moved.
