86. Culloden

1964

With Culloden, Peter Watkins turned his documentary style to the famous 18th Century battle of Culloden Moor, between the Scottish Jacobites and the English army. Watkins uses the conceit of having documentary crews interviewing both armies and covering the battle as if it was a news broadcast. We find out personal details of various participants from both sides of the battle, the information given about their background helping to make their bloody fate even more hard-hitting. Neither side come out of it well, but the English are by far seen to be more brutal. They murder the wounded, kill innocents and engage in a post-battle campaign that resembles ethnic cleansing. Watkins intended the film as a parallel to the ongoing Vietnam War, and he used the news coverage of the events as a guideline for his own approach, but the film is just as relevant to any war. Watkins not only shows the parallels between wars, but he also re-examines history and brings to life an event that to many was just an accepted and long-forgotten battle. It's a gritty piece, an anti-war film that really brings home the brutality of conflict and the extremes to which people can be driven. it may not have been as immediate at the time as The War Game, but it's another vital piece from Watkins.

Yeah, of course you did.

I think their last all the way through listenable album was Garage Inc, which was about 15 years ago. St. Anger was truly awful, but there were a couple of OK tracks on Death Magnetic.

I genuinely did, I'm also emailing my friend who adores Metallica,so taking the piss out of them is second nature at the moment.

85. Parks and Recreation
"Hunting Trip"

Season 02, Episode 10
2009

Andy and April's Fancy Party nearly took the Parks and Rec spot, April and Andy have quickly become my new favourite screen couple, and the spit take scene here would have been enough to mark this episode out as a classic, but it was Nick Offerman's towering performance as the wounded Ron Swanson that won the day for Hunting Trip. The guys in the office have a deal with the rangers where they can use their cabin for a hunting trip once a year. This year, Leslie demands in on the deal, bringing with her the more feminine members of the group - herself, Ann, Donna and Tom. With Leslie determined to prove she's better at hunting than the guys, an accident occurs and Ron ends up hurt. Meanwhile, April is left alone in the office, and we see the beginnings of a possible relationship with Andy. If you don't love this episode you can come round to my house while I'm watching it and shoot me in the head.

88. Square Pegs
"No Substitutions"

Season 01, Episode 18
1983

We've already covered the inspirational teacher sub-genre on the list, but when another show tackles it, and the teacher in question is Bill Murray, we owe it to ourselves to love the episode unconditionally. I only became aware of the show a few months back, and the thought of a comedy series starring Sarah Jessica Parker was more than a little offputting, but at age 18 she was a charming and engaging performer who managed to create a sympathetic, indeed loveable, lead character in the nerdish Patty Greene. Square Pegs was created by SNL vet Anne Beatts, and it brings the same kind of irreverant cool to the teen comedy series. In an excellent cast, the "Totally different head, totally" of the tragic Merritt Butrick's Johnny Slash was the obvious stand-out, but even he takes a back-seat to Murray's teacher. Murray is just allowed to be Murray in this episode, the same persona from SNL and various early 80s comedies like Stripes and Ghostbusters, cooler than everyone else in the room, arrogant enough to know it, but likeable enough that you can easily overlook that arrogance.

For some reason I thought I'd mentioned it back on your original TV list, but I can't have done. I'm half tempted to add it to the rewatch pile as well now. May as well since WKRP will be there too.

Parks and Recreation sounds like it might be my kind of thing, but as far as I can see it's not out on R2 DVD and there is not one UK channel that`s airing it. : (

Also - Aubrey Plaza is funny, hot and is one of the two best things about Sco... well, I won't go there again.

Both. My choice would have been "The Misery Chick" though but it's not my list

And it's an easy, short rewatch too. I was stunned by how good SJP is in it.

Can you access the U.S. Netflix? I'm sure someone said there was a way to do that. The first three seasons are there.

Yeah, me too. I think the change in Andy between season one and the second half of season 2 is incredible.

84. My So-Called Life
"Why Jordan Can't Read"

Season 01, Episode 07
1994

My So-Called Life was the Queen of the female led coming-of-age teen drama shows, Angela Chase made a star of Claire Danes, gave the world one of the great screen fathers in Tom Irwin's Graham Chase, and Jared Leto was so good as the rebellious object of Angela's affections, Jordan Catelano, that you can even forgive his shitty shitty music. The show might seem a little whiny to the cynical, but the characters are so fascinating (except Brian), so likeable (except Brian) and so realistic (except Brian) that it rises above being a mere emo teen drama. Why Jordan Can't Read doesn't actually delve too far into Jordan's obvious learning disability, it's more concerned with the troubled relationship he has with Angela and the way teenage crushes can so easily lead to broken hearts.

83. Arrested Development
"Storming the Castle"

Season 01, Episode 09
2004

Arrested Development revolves around the Bluths, a wealthy American family whose world comes crashing down when the father is arrested. The job of saving the business and the dysfunctional family is left to the only responsible child, Michael. Out of family loyalty he decides to do his best, even though his family are lying, cheating losers who show him no appreciation. Arrested Development amazes me on every level, the writing, the acting. It also treats its audience with intelligence, being unafraid to raise a small plot point in one episode and not offer resolution until much later. The cult that developed around the show was well deserved. Storming the Castle sees Michael trying to play dirty, Maeby trying to rebel against her mother's stand on leather, and Tobias trying to bond with his daughter, leading to the creepiest and funniest scene in the entire run of the show.

For guests either John Cleese or Vincent Price but the best episode for working both with and without the guest is the Loretta Lynn one. Brilliant idea and it worked really well. There are only two episodes I don't care for - Elton John and Lou Rawls (and even then I love The Muppet bits)

Good episode for AW Pet. Awesome episode for ER, in my top 5 of the show.

Not seen the rest.

82. The Andy Griffith Show
"Man in a Hurry"

Season 03, Episode 16
1963

It's all too easy to dismiss these tales of small-town life, filled with good people and good hearts as hopelessly old-fashioned and nostalgic. And indeed they are, but that's part of what makes them so good. Nobody would ever suggest that The Andy Griffith Show was filled with realistic characters, but sometimes characters in a show need to be the kind you'd aspire to be, rather than those who are you. And Sheriff Andy Taylor, Deputy Barney Fife, Gomer Pyle, Aunt Bea et al are just plain decent people. They're also funny, especially Don Knotts goofball performance as Barney. Man in a Hurry could almost have been a Twilight Zone episode. A man on his way to a business meeting breaks down just outside of Mayberry. It's a Sunday, so he can't get any help fixing the car, and he discovers what seems to be a town lost in time, removed from the pressures and hassles of everyday life. Of course, we're regular visitors, so we know the magic of the small town, but Malcolm Tucker goes from annoyance with what he sees as slow-moving hicks, to finding a real sense of wonder in this sleepy little place.

81. Pennies from Heaven
"Better Think Twice"

Series 01, Episode 04
1978

Dennis Potter's groundbreaking first musical serial deserves a place on any t.v. list. Not just because of how important and influential it is as a series, but for how bloody amazing it is. A wonderful dark fantasy drama, Pennies From Heaven stars Bob Hoskins in a star making performance (still his greatest work to date) as Arthur, a travelling salesman of sheet music. Sexually frustrated in his marriage to Gemma Craven, Hoskins begins an affair with naive schoolteacher Eileen (Cheryl Campbell). Unwittingly destroying her life, leading her into prostitution and finding himself wanted for murder. Better Think Twice is focused on Eileen's descent into darkness, aided by her encountering the pimp Tom (Hywell Bennett) Set in the 1930s, Potter uses the music of the period wonderfully, having the characters mime to songs in order to reflect the workings of their souls and expose their hopes and dreams. If that makes it sound sweet-natured then it is in a way, but of course that's undercut by the lust, murder and depression that runs through every episode.

80. Midnight Caller
"The Execution of John Saringo"

Season 01, Episode 06
1989

Midnight Caller was about former cop turned late night talk show host, Jack Killian
(Gary Cole) By night he'd listen to the problems of the callers to his radio show, by day, he acted as a kind of unofficial detective, helping to solve the problems of those who needed him. This episode won an Emmy for guest star Joe Spano. Spano played John Saringo, a man on death row for the murders of some teenagers during a robbery. He is protesting his innocence and about to be executed and he invites Killian's show to come and record a live interview with him on the night of his execution. Former cop Killian agrees with the death penalty, but is reluctant to put himself in the position of interviewing a condemned man. The bulk of the episode is the interview itself, with both men putting in hard-hitting performances, before we come to the devastating conclusion. What makes the show especially powerful is the fact that it never takes the easy option, despite a few red herrings that make you think it will.

79. Still Game
"Doacters"

Series 02, Episode 03
2003

A spin-off from the genius Scottish sketch show, Chewin' The Fat, Still Game focuses on two Glasgow pensioners, Jack and Victor, who live in a council estate called Craiglang. The creators, Greg Hemphill and Ford Kiernan (two men in their 30s) play the lead roles, Jack and Victor, two aged widowers determined not to let life beat them down. Their lives revolve around their friends, the pub, the local shop and the bookies. And the schemes they manage to get themselves involved in.

The show isn't dominated by Jack and Victor though. It features a wonderful supporting cast and all the regulars are given their turn to shine. Particular mention going to Paul Riley as Winston, a Scottish version of George Costanza, a man delighted with the idea of having an infected foot (thanks to the higher rate of benefit he'll be paid) until he finds out it has to be amputated. But the rest of the cast from shopkeeper Navid to loudmouth Isa to tightfisted Tam all deserve acclaim as well. The supporting cast do more than just hang around on the fringes of the action. And they all become developed beyond the easy stereotypes. The comedy is largely character driven, and sometimes it takes on a melancholy air, but that doesn't make the show lazy or too gentle. It just adds to the depth of the characters. Doacters sees Jack and Victor trying anti-depressants. Despite never suffering from depression.

78. The Boondocks
"The Trial of R. Kelly"

Season 01, Episode 02
2005

The Boondocks focuses on the Freeman family, an African-American Grandfather and his two Grandsons, Riley and Huey, who move from the city to the suburbs. Huey is an intellectual, someone longing for a return to the days of black activism. While Riley is a wannabe gangster, obsessed with rappers and movie gangsters. The show takes on various aspects of modern culture, filtered through the eyes of the family. Through the two seasons so far the show has focused on rap shootings, reality tv, etc. One notorious episode focused on the idea of Martin Luther King not being killed in the 60s (instead slipping into a 30 year long coma) when he wakes up he finds himself disgusted with much of modern African-American culture. The show has courted controversy in America (mostly for the use of a certain word beginning with N) but the attacks from the likes of Al Sharpton seem rather idiotic. Show creator Aaron McGruder is a young black liberal who sides with the ideas of progressive thinking. The attacks in the show focus on the kind of things he feels are holding back modern black culture. The Trial of R. Kelly sees the singer in trouble for filming himself urinating on an underage girl, splitting the Freeman brothers and the local community during the trial. Huey is disgusted by the video, Riley is more interested in getting a new album

"At what point does personal responsibility become a factor in this equation? I see piss comin' I run. She saw piss comin' she stayed. And why should I miss out on the next R. Kelly album *just* fo' that?"

77. Homicide: Life on the Street
"Subway"

Season 06, Episode 04
1997

Adapted from David Simon's enthralling non-fiction book of the same name, Homicide focused on the homicide department of Baltimore PD. Homicide gave us a bleak look into the jobs and lives of the squad of detectives run by Al 'G' Giardello (Yaphet Kotto) Often overlooked in favour of the more typical NYPD Blue, Homicide was different from most police shows of the period because it didn't attempt to add glamour to the job, working homicide was shown to be depressing and destructive. The cops are often as lost as the criminals they arrest. Despite a large ensemble cast, the heart of the show is Tim Bayliss (Kyle Secor) the series opens with Bayliss' first day on the job and he often provides the audience empathy point over the entire run. Bayliss' rage and torment over an unsolved child murder is particularly affecting, and it becomes a running theme for his character. The show's most popular character was probably Bayliss' partner, Frank Pembleton (Andre Braugher). Depicted as a cold supercop, devoted to justice above all else in the first few seasons, the character was later to show a more human side following a stroke. The recovery from the stroke (while unrealistic due to network demands) showed Andre Braugher as an actor at the very top of his game and he deservedly won an Emmy for his work. The show really hit its stride in season four, Daniel Baldwin (always the weak link in the show) leaves the cast and gets replaced by Reed Diamond's detective Kellerman. The show's most ambitious and long-running storyline involved Kellerman's involvment with the death of drug dealer Luther Mahoney. Subway could easily have been a gimmicky episode, a man (Vincent D'Onofrio) has been pushed off a subway platform and is caught between the platform and the train, the moment the train is moved, he'll die. But instead of being a one-note idea, it becomes an exploration of the humanity of the victim and the detectives. Pembleton and Bayliss have to investigate the murder (for a murder it will be), find his girlfriend, and comfort the dying man. Powerful stuff.

76. WTF
"Carlos Mencia"

Episodes 75 & 76

Marc Maron's WTF show has gone from being just Maron podcasting and interviewing some of his comedy friends to being one of the most important and influential shows in modern comedy. The Mencia episodes have become the stuff of legend, Mencia had been accused of stealing material from numerous other comics, with the accusations going public in a big way with a confrontation between Mencia and Joe Rogan. Maron interviewed Mencia to try and get his perspective on the accusations, and the first episode is fairly mild, but Maron felt manipulated by Mencia and asked him back for a second interview, in the meantime interview some Latin-American comedians with a better perspective, and it's the second episode that sees Maron really getting to the heart of Mencia, and it's not a pretty place. There aren't as many fireworks as the Gallagher episode, but it's incredible to hear one comedian taking another to task, and to see a man as famous as Mencia reveal some particularly nasty aspects to his character.

Where would you place the Martin ep? Top 5? Top 10?

Awesome episode for ER, in my top 5 of the show

What are the rest of your top 5?

Top 10 for Martin. It's the best thing he's done

Love's Labor Lost, Be Still My Heart/All In The Family, Ambush, On The Beach for ER. Maybe Secrets and Lies as well. A top 100 episodes for the show would be easy to compile but a right pain to order.

A superb episode from Life On The Street.

75. Beavis and Butt-head
"Way Down Mexico Way"

Season 02, Episode 10
1993

Beavis and Butt-head are two of the dumbest characters in the history of television, they also have shitty taste in music. Luckily, they're also hilarious. One of the most controversial episodes of the show, because some people think the audience are as stupid as the characters. This episode sees the dim-witted duo go to Mexico hoping to buy illegal fireworks, and find themselves roped into transporting drugs back across the border. But they forget to tie the condoms before they swallow them.

74. The Adventures of Pete & Pete
"The Big Quiet"

Season 02, Episode 04
1994

The show is (as the title explains) the adventures of Big Pete and Little Pete - The Wrigleys. Along
with their family and friends in the fictional town of Wellsville. Big Pete has a sort of but not really romance with best friend Ellen, a rivalry with "Endless" Mike and a good claim to being the sanest person in Wellsville. Little Pete is constantly clashing with authority, hero-worships Artie, a bizarre superhero who lives in the neighbourhood, and usually chooses the path of most resistance. With an amazing list of guest performers (Iggy Pop, Steve Buscemi, Debbie Harry, Janeane Garofalo, Michael Stipe...) and a soundtrack featuring The Gothic Archies, The Magnetic Fields, Polaris and The Apples in Stereo, if you don't love this show then you have never and will never be cool. The Big Quiet sees Little Pete learning to deal with grief and Big Pete learning to talk with his father.
